    ECKHARD SCHULZEFIELITZ (1929) AFTER FINISHING HIS STUDIES, ECKHARD SCHULZE-FIELITZ (*1929) STARTED TO WORK IN THE MID-FIFTIES WITHIN THE CONVENTIONAL FORMS OF POSTWAR MODERNISM. TOGETHER WITH TWO FORMER FELLOW STUDENTS HE LAUNCHED AN ARCHITECTURE FIRM IN ESSEN. THEIR AWARD-WINNING DESIGN FOR LANDESHAUS KLN, WHICH WAS BUILT 59-1957, AS WELL AS THE CONCURRENT FACTORY BUILDING FOR THE PHOENIX-WERKE IN BLOMBERG SHOW RASTERIZED CURTAIN FACADES IN THE TRADITION OF MIES VAN DER ROHE.

    SCHULZE-FIELITZ REMAINS SKEPTICAL TOWARD THE HANDED DOWN CONCEPTS OF ARCHITECTURE AND CITY PLANNING. AT THAT TIME I WAS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING ELSE, AS THE ARCHITECT STATED IN AN INTERVIEW. I WAS LOOKING FOR A SERIAL, OPEN, FLEXIBLE AND MULTIFUNCTIONAL UNIVERSAL STRUCTURE THAT ALLOWED DIFFERENT FIGURATIONS, FILLINGS AND SPACES, VERSATILE, MOUNTABLE AND DEMOUNTABLE. I WAS LOOKING FOR THE LAWS OF SPACE. THE RESULT WAS THE RAUMSTRUKTUR IN 1959.INTENDS TO CREATE ADEQUATE SPATIAL STRUCTURES FOR A NEW AND MORE FLEXIBLE SOCIETY. FOLLOWING BERNHARD HAFNERS CONCEPT OF AN URBAN ARCHITECTURE, THE CONCEIVED SPATIAL STRUCTURE SHALL NOT ONLY DEPICT SOCIAL INTERRELATIONS BUT SHALL ALSO FORM THE REALITY OF A SOLIDARY AND LIBERAL CITY COMMUNITY.

BERBAUUNG RAGNITZ IS ONE OF THE OUTSTANDING MEGASTRUCTURE PROJECTS. COMPARED WITH THE MOSTLY SKETCH LIKE-FOMENTING (1) PROPOSALS BY HANS HOLLEIN, WALTER PICHLERS OR OTHER MEMBERS OF THE VIENNESE AND GRAZ ARCHITECTURE SCENE IT IS MUCH MORE DETAILED AND REFERS MORE TO ACTUAL CONSTRUCTION. CUSTOMIZED LIVING UNITS AND TRANSPORTATION LINES CAN BE INTEGRATED INTO A SECONDARY SYSTEM SERVING THE DOUBLE PURPOSE OF CREATING A BASIC SPATIAL STRUCTURE AND HOSTING THE SUPPLY NETWORK.     YONA FRIEDMAN DEVELOPED HIS CONCEPT OF VILLE SPATIALE, THE SPATIAL CITY, ON THE BASIS OF TWO ELEMENTARY THOUGHTS: ARCHITECTURE SHOULD ONLY PROVIDE A FRAMEWORK, IN WHICH THE INHABITANTS MIGHT CONSTRUCT THEIR HOMES ACCORDING TO THEIR NEEDS AND IDEAS, FREE FROM ANY PATERNALISM BY A MASTER BUILDER. FURTHERMORE, HE WAS CONVINCED THAT THE PROGRESSING AUTOMATION OF PRODUCTION AND, RESULTING FROM THAT, THE INCREASING AMOUNT OF LEISURE TIME WOULD FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGE

    SUPERSTUDIO WAS FOUNDED IN 1966. ALONGSIDE HEAD THEORETICIAN ADOLFO NATALINI THE GROUP INCLUDED THE ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNERS CRISTIANO TORALDO DI FRANCIA, ROBERTO MAGRIS, GIAN PIERO FRASSINELLI, ALESSANDRO MAGRIS AND ALESSANDRO POLI. IN 1969 SUPERSTUDIO PRESENTED A FLIPPANT RETORT TO MEGASTRUCTURE, AS CUTTING AS IT WAS IRRITATING: THE CONTINUOUS MONUMENT, AN ARCHITECTURAL MODEL FOR TOTAL URBANISATION.THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY TWELVE IDEAL CITIES, PUBLISHED IN AD MAGAZINE IN 1971, AND CINQUE STORIE DEL SUPERSTUDIO: VITA, EDUCAZIONE, CEREMONIA, AMORE, MORTE, WHICH APPEARED IN CASABELLA IN 1973.     ARCHIGRAM WAS AN AVANT-GARDE ARCHITECTURAL GROUP FORMED IN THE 1960S - BASED AT THE ARCHITECTURAL ASSOCIATION, LONDON - THAT WAS FUTURIST, ANTI-HEROIC AND PRO-CONSUMERIST, DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM TECHNOLOGY IN ORDER TO CREATE A NEW REALITY THAT WAS SOLELY EXPRESSED THROUGH HYPOTHETICAL PROJECTS. THE MAIN MEMBERS OF THE GROUP WERE PETER COOK, WARREN CHALK, RON HERRON, DENNIS CROMPTON, MICHAEL WEBB AND DAVID GREENE.

    DESPITE ITS SERIOUS BACKGROUND, ARCHIGRAM BECAME A SYNONYM FOR THE FUSION OF POP AND ARCHITECTURE. IN 1961 THE FIRST ISSUE OF THE MAGAZINE ARCHIGRAM APPEARED, EDITED BY DAVID GREENE, PETER COOK AND MICHAEL WEBB, IN AN EDITION OF 300 AND PRINTED ON LARGE-FORMAT PAPER.     WITH NEW BABYLON CONSTANT ENVISIONS A WORLD WIDE CITY FOR THE FUTURE WHERE LAND IS OWNED COLLECTIVELY, WORK IS FULLY AUTOMATED AND THE NEED TO WORK REPLACED WITH A NOMADIC LIFE OF CREATIVE PLAY.
