Whats happening inHadley Wood?

As part of Enfield’s futureplans, the LocalDevelopment Frameworkincorporates changes tothe local Green Beltamounting to a reduction

in size of about three hectares. TheCouncil have published their proposalswhich can be read on their website atwww.enfield.gov.uk then following the linkto Planning, Land and Regeneration.Erika Lindsay who is a local resident

and a professional planner has drawn ourattention to some changes applying toHadley Wood. One is a slight alteration tothe boundary along Bartrams Lane sothat the left hand verge (as you go downthe lane) is now Green Belt. Otherchanges involve parts of Waggon Rd. bythe railway bridge as well as down bySlopers Farm. There are also some smallchanges around the golf course. Wehave looked at these and cannot findanything particularly worrying aboutthem. However if you are living close tothe areas mentioned you might like tocheck the details yourself. On Wednesday September 14th there

was the public meeting to discuss plansfor a much improved playground on thefield between the school and our villagehall aka the Hadley Wood AssociationHall.Coming up in November will be the

annual Family Fireworks evening onSaturday November 5th. The gates will beopen at 5.30pm and the fireworks willstart at 7.30pm. We hope you will come

to the usual field behind Crescent Eastand bring the kids.Work on the Grade 2 listed white gates

at the top of Hadley Road and TheCrescent is proceeding well. As you knowmost of the cost is being borne by theFriends of Hadley Common. If you wouldlike to contribute to the preservation ofthese historic landmarks please sendyour cheques to Chris FeldmanHon.Treasurer, 66 Hadley Road NewBarnet, Herts EN5 5QS made payable to‘Friends of Hadley Common’. As youswing your car through the famous gatesthis will allow you to casually mention tofriends from outside the area that youhave been involved in their upkeep.(Modesty of course preventing you frommentioning the size of your contribution). Finally, for those of you involved in

organising events in Hadley Wood pleaseremember to let us know in plenty of timeso that we can include details in the issueone month before the event. We can alsoput details of forthcoming events onto ourwebsite at www.hadleywood.org.uk.Rod ArmstrongEditor

Profile. Nick StatonNick Staton is a well known figure inHadley Wood and a great supporter of itsinstitutions. Interested in the variouspathways he followed before arriving onour doorsteps, the HW News decided togo and talk to him. Welcomed into theinner sanctum of his Hadley Wood OfficeI heard his story. Born in Muswell Hill heattended Keble before going as aboarder to Bishop’s Stortford school. His

father had come down to London fromStoke on Trent and starting with very little, developed a firm making fireplaces. Itbecame a very successful business butonce central heating was introducednobody wanted fireplaces anymore. Lifebecame a lot tougher and Nick had toleave the school. He and his sister wentto work for their father as he startedagain, this time making bedroomfurniture. They worked seven days aweek all hours. Nick liked the contact withclients, could draw plans and designlayouts. “My Dad taught me how to geton with people” he said. His sister did theadministration. After five years of hardwork the company was doing wellenough to move to Staples Corner whereStatons furniture became a well knownand respected firm employing up toeighty men and women in the factory.Although Nick liked to work with his

father he did not want to take over thefirm and with it the daily headachesassociated with manufacturing andfactories. An alternative came when hissister married George Roberts of BladesEstate agents based in Totteridge Lane.Nick was offered a job in the office, loved

the work and got on well with Georgewho he had known since they were boys.Sadly George’s marriage to his sister didnot last and after the divorce Nick felt hehad to leave the office. Jobless he wasoffered a position with Macallan and Evethe estate agents opposite Barnet policestation. There he continued to learn thebusiness. Eventually Stewart Macallanretired, Nick and his sister bought thebusiness and the firm of Statons EstateAgents was launched. “Why black andyellow” I asked. “Keble colours” saidNick. “I must have subconsciously got tolike them”.One day his sister announced they were

moving. The new office was at HadleyHighstone opposite the Hadley GreenGarage. Further expansion followed withoffices now in Radlett, Brookmans Parkand Totteridge. There are also links incentral London and abroad. GeorgeRoberts moved back with him and theHadley Wood office in Crescent West, once Blades, became Statons the onlyestate agency in Hadley Wood.Nick likes Hadley Wood. “Sensational

place. Still very sought after”. His ownhome is here and he has always been astrong supporter of its many activities. Hesponsors the Tennis Club, the JuniorFootball, fireworks night by the HadleyWood Association and the Scratch teamfrom Hadley Wood Golf Club. If that wasnot enough he also recently sponsoredthe Talent Contest at the St Paul’s Church

Centenary weekend. The other officessponsor Brookman’s Park Fete and theEssendon fete. “My philosophy” he says“Is that this is the area I work in and earnmy living. If I can put something back inby sponsorships or other forms ofsupport I am happy”.What about relaxation? He enjoys

being with the grown up children heinherited after marrying Nikki three yearsago. “That was a life changing moment.A wonderful change”. He likes to playtennis, watches sport on TV and looks

after Maisie the spaniel. ‘What else I ask?’Music is very important. He relaxes byplaying the piano, composing music andwriting lyrics. Pressed he admits tohaving his name on a couple of albums. On the wall above him is a collage ofpeople and scenes from Barnet lifeproduced by the Council. He is there inthe foreground though it is not the artistsgreatest picture.Quite rightly he will not be drawn on the

topic of Hadley Wood’s celebrities. Mychances of an introduction to Cheryl, JLS,Alexander Burke or various footballersfade along with the possibility of somegreat articles for the News.I get up to go. His phone (kindly left

outside the room) is getting seriouslyheated up. Back to business.Rod Armstrong

TAILORING AND REPAIRS BY EXPERTS

Nancy Blishen.Memories of HadleyWood. When I came to Hadley Wood in 1951,Number 1 Crescent West was a largehouse standing in an acre and a quarterof garden. (The picture is of the houseand back garden, now Bartram’s Lane) Ithad been built as a railway hotel. However General Booth of Salvation

Army fame, who lived in LancasterAvenue fearing drunkenness and allkinds of other wickedness, put his footdown hard enough to prevent this everhappening. Albert Edward Kingwell, bailifffor the area, lived and worked on thesecond floor but hardly used theremainder of the house. After he died itstood empty for two years and this iswhen my husband and I with two othercouples who were friends, found it. It wasnot a particularly beautiful house but ithad possibilities and was ideal for turninginto three flats. Finally after muchnegotiation, the house was ours and wehad time to look around the area that wasto be our home once the conversion wascomplete.Hadley Wood was a different place

then. For example, the railway station hada canopy with white wooden ‘dags’ round

the outside- remniscent of Hornby trainsets – and the platforms and waitingrooms were lit by gas. There were onlytwo sets of lines; work had yet to bestarted on the building of the secondtunnel and the trains were still poweredby steam. At the top of the slope by the station

was an air-raid siren, which was testedperiodically. We were glad when thatcame to an end! A blue police box wasalso there, where our neighbourhoodpoliceman used to put his Alsatian dog, with instructions not to bark-all part of histraining! There was a shed-type building next to

the station which had originally been a coaloffice, but by then was being used as adistribution centre for free orange juice andpowdered milk for babies as well asMarmite at a reduced price. It later becamea greengrocers and was finally pulleddown when they built the new station. The present cricket pitch and football

field, which lies behind Bartram’s Lane, was a lush meadow full of wild flowers, with horses grazing on it and a tetheredgoat in the far corner. Cathy who ownedthe goat, finally married theneighbourhood policeman and theymoved to Devon to start a farm together.Kingwell Road was built first and then

Lawdens began building houses inDuchy, Claremont road and CourtleighAvenue. There was no primary school inthe 1950’s. A bus used to pick up ourchildren near the station and on a longroundabout journey, take pupils fromoutlying farms, finally depositing them atthe village school in Botany Bay, off theRidgeway. There was a special treat onbirthdays, when the lucky one wasallowed to sit next to Sam the driver. There were several colourful and

eccentric characters in the Crescent. Onelady in particular was apparently aBishop’s widow. She met my husbandone day in the street and demanded “Oxford or Cambridge”? Rememberingboyhood challenges that referred to theBoat Race he promptly answered“Cambridge” although he had not beento either. Presumably she assumed that ifyou lived in Hadley Wood you must havebeen one or the other. There were only two shops in Hadley

Wood then. The Hadley Wood Storesowned by Mr Collins- who informed meonce “We are the Harrods of HadleyWood”. I was prepared to dispute this butit occurred to me that, as far as priceswere concerned he was right! Next doorwas a rather formidable lady, MissFrusher, who reigned over what can onlybe described as an emporium, whichincluded newspapers, magazines, haberdashery and confectionery. Theshop was lit by gas and hanging over thegas bracket there was, amazingly, a pairof what I think used to be called directoireknickers (double gussets and elastic atthe knees). Clutching their Saturdaypennies on a quest for sweets, ourchildren, catching sight of this enormousarticle of underwear, used to be seized byhelpless giggles and totally unable togive their orders. If we had had a town crier it would have

been Frank Pinner who lived in a small

cottage on Camlet Way. He knew everyonein Hadley Wood and had his own petnames for most of them (some not verycomplimentary!). He told us that MrKingwell when living at Number 1 CrescentWest had swivelling mirrors on all theground floor windows –to enable him tocheck the gardeners were not shirking. As an agent to the Jack estate,

Kingwell was responsible for the lettingof some of the houses in the Crescentsand people brought their rents to him.He apparently had a large cash box inhis office and had the reputation ofbeing ‘a bit of a miser’. When he diedthe box was never found and we weretold to keep our eyes open when thehouse was demolished eleven yearslater- but no luck. Another of Kingwell’shabits was to take plants from thegardens of houses that were for saleand put them into his own. Thus we hada very well stocked garden when wemoved in. But, on the positive side, thefield at the back of Bartrams Lane, where cricket, football and dog walkingstill flourish was, to our understanding,Mr Kingwell’s gift to the residents ofHadley Wood ‘in perpetuity’.Time went by and eleven years later in

1964, a local builder asked us if we hadever thought of selling the property. Hehad already discovered that the land weoccupied was the only place where more

shops could be built. By then the childrenwere growing up and we had discovereddry rot in the basement. Altogether wewere ready for a change. So a deal wasdone. He would erect the shops and flatson Crescent West and build us threehouses at the end of the garden-facingthe fields at the back.We had grown very fond of Hadley

Wood and wanted it to be an attractivedevelopment. We employed an architectat considerable expense to design thehouses and the shops. In his plans theexisting curved drive in front of the housewould remain as would the beautiful silverbirch tree at the end of the drive. We wereyoung and innocent enough to believethat all this would be done, but sadly atractor ‘accidentally went through theroots of the silver birch etc etc.I just wanted to say this so you know

that at least we tried to get it right.Nancy Blishen.(Reprinted with the kind permission of MrsBlishen from a previous article in theHadley Wood News. Photos are from theJohn Leatherdale ‘Images of HadleyWood’ collection)

Bartram’s Lane field. The field behind the shops of CrescentWest also known as Bartram’s Lane fieldis part of the land leased to the HadleyWood Residents Association (the HWA)by Enfield Council. (The photo wasactually taken last year when somehorses from an adjoining field decidedthey preferred our grass.) The field risesup in a sort of inverted U shape over therailway bridge to join up with the landbehind the Association building (ourVillage Hall) and adjoining the Primaryschool. Part of the agreement with Enfieldwas that the field should be used toprovide sporting and recreational facilitiesfor the residents of Hadley Wood. The Hadley’s Annualcricket match.

A September Sunday. The annual cricketmatch between teamsfrom East and WestHadley is being playedon a tree encircled

Hadley Common. (East and West refersto those residents living to the east orwest of the white gates at MonkenHadley. Roughly speaking its HadleyHighstone versus Monken Hadley andHadley Wood.) It’s a fixture which hasbeen keenly contested since 1986, thewinners taking home the HadleyChallenge Cricket Shield. It all makes for a nice scene. One that

has been enacted here and all over thecountry for at least three hundred years.

Anthony Trollope probably watched orplayed cricket here whilst living with hismother Fanny at Grandon in 1836. Todayits a windy and cloudy day, intermittentlysunny but with a threat of rain. On theCommon spectators are sitting on foldingchairs or sprawled on the grass. A coupleof dogs sit at the feet of their ownerspleading for attention. Some small boysare practising. A nicely eclectic mix ofladies and gentlemen of all age groupsare on the pitch. (The youngest player isEd Gaeton aged 8 yrs. The oldest ..wellactually no one volunteered thisinformation). Mike Bethune Captain of theWest team and a resident in the area forthirty five years, kindly explains the system.

Over there is Justin Jeffrey normallyswinging a golf club but on this occasioncaptaining the East team. Simon Walsh,Chairman of the Tennis Club is showinghis versatility with the cricket bat and LynBrimson masquerading as a cricketer isfielding at cover point.
