Hadley Wood Golf Club.Whenever golf clubs are discussedprejudice is never far away. Images ofpompous men in blazers, old fashioneddress codes and unfair treatment ofwomen may spring to mind. Is it fair? Wellin the spirit of those seekers after the truthcharacterised by our nationalnewspapers, the News decided to havea look at the Hadley Wood club.A history of the club can be found in the
excellent booklet ‘Hadley Wood. Thestory of a Golf club’ written by localresident Pat Taylor. To briefly summarise,the mansion house was built on landoriginally part of Enfield Chase, the estatelater becoming known as Beech Hill Park.By 1850 it had passed into the hands ofCharles Jack generally considered thefounder of Hadley Wood. After variouschanges in ownership and usageincluding farming and a wartime trainingground for the Royal Fusiliers, themansion and land was bought by theEconomic Insurance Co Ltd. part of theFurness Withy shipping line. Key peopleinvolved were two men from WestHartlepool, Walter Warwick and FrederickLewis (later Lord Essendon). Eventuallypart of the land and the mansion were
converted to a golf club and the (to be)famous Alister Mackenzie asked todesign the course. Mackenzie was bornin Yorkshire of Scottish parentage. Hewas asked to leave his club in Leedshaving had an affair with the Captain’swife but thereafter designed some of thefinest golf clubs in the world includingAugusta and Cypress Point in the USA.His name has since been synonymouswith fine courses.
So what is the place like? I thought Iwould start with the General Manager.Golf Club managers used to be retiredColonels with tempers to match. Not soours. Bill Beckett is a large and friendlySouth African. I asked him what the clubwas like. ‘Well’ he said ‘It is absolutelytop class. Take a look out of the window’.I did. Acres of green sward and trees asfar as the eye could see. Lakes reflectingthe sunlight. Not bad? Glorious. Was itvery expensive to join? There is no joiningfee but the annual membership is about£1800. We have around 600 memberswhich means easy access tothe course’. Exclusive? ‘Notin any way at all’ says Bill.‘We interview potentialmembers but it is just really away to meet them and makesure they know which end ofa golf club is which. Once inthe club a newcomer has toplay some rounds withexisting members. Thisensures they have an ideaabout the rules and can geton with people. ‘Noapartheid then’ I askinnocently. Bill winces. ‘No
way. We even take you Lancashiremen,though’ he adds with a chuckle ‘we areconsidering introducing a quota. (Veryfunny I think). Does anyone get asked toleave? ‘It does happen’ admits Bill.‘Rarely though. It is usually persistentcheating’. Throwing your golf bag in thelake in a fury is not really approved of butonce is usually enough for most people.Especially if their car keys are in the bag.What about dress codes? ‘Well we do
have a code’ says Bill. ‘Nojeans in the clubhouse forexample. We think membersappreciate this. It sets astandard and stops the placelooking scruffy. We believethat wearing a reasonableoutfit has a positive effect onbehaviour’. So what is specialabout the club? Bill ticks off afew points.‘We are one of the top 200

We are also veryenvironmentally conscious. ‘How’s that ?’I interrupt. ‘ Well, we have introduced wildlife corridors, take great care of our riverand lake (they even have newt counts!),and allow wild areas to develop in orderto encourage insect and wild life. You willoften see foxes and deer on the courseas well as a huge variety of birdlife. In2009 we received a major environmentalaward. But you should talk to Simonabout that’ (Simon Grand is the HeadGreenkeeper). We also do our best toencourage young people to join. Thereare now about 60 young memberspaying only £175 a year’. The phone isringing. I retreat and check in at the proshop supervised by the HeadProfessional Peter Jones. Peter and histwo colleagues Paul and Alistair run theshop and do all the teaching. They arefine players in their own right and teachwith great skill and patience. I ask Peterhow long on average it takes for abeginner to learn to play golf. Peter thinksfor a moment. ‘Probably from six toeighteen months to reach the stage
where you are given an official handicap.Then you are able to join in thecompetitions. As with everything elseprogress depends on the amount of timeyou have available for lessons andpractice’. Next on the list is the ClubCaptain. I track him down to the lounge.Sam Husain. Born in New Delhi in 1947Sam spent the first year of his life movingto Pakistan with his family during thePartition of India. Sam’s father was thena doctor attached to the Indian Air force.Accepting a last minute offer of a lift by
plane to Peshawar, Sam and his familymissed the train they were to havetravelled in. It was ambushed and manylives were lost. Later he moved toEngland and made the very sounddecision to get his legal education in thefine city of Manchester, He is currentlyCEO of Foyles. (His niece by the way isthe lovely BBC presenter Mishal Husain).‘Whats the club like Sam?’. ‘Nice’ hesays ‘Great course. It is also friendly. Asan example we have a sign up sheetbefore the weekend competitions.Members do not play with the samegroup of friends all the time but simplyadd their names to the list wherever thereis a space. So we all meet a wide rangeof members’. Old fashioned? ‘Well’ hesays ‘change is always a challenge but itis steadily happening. Standards arehigh. Mind you we have had a few

battles’. The new TV set on the wall looksdown at us in blank agreement. Next isthe Lady Captain. Migs Earle. ‘What it likehere Migs’ I ask ‘Well’ she replies ‘Ialways had rather a bad impression ofthe club but actually I was quite wrong. Ijoined with my husband about five yearsago. I was an absolute beginner. But Ihad some lessons with Paul (one of theprofessionals), played rounds with somelong suffering friends, practised and waseventually given a handicap. Once thathappens you can join in the competitionsand then you progress rapidly. Everyonewas very helpful. As regards malechauvinism I would say it is on the wayout. Its history. There are about 80 ladiesplaying here. I think we are definitely onequal terms with the men. There is alwaysa bit of banter though. As you know wehave a match every year between themen and the women. St George v TheDragons. And you know who theDragons are!’ Unable to imagine anyoneless like a dragon than the Lady CaptainI leave the club via the entrance hall andcheck the notice boards. Team sheets.Scratch team (the best players in theclub), Tigers (next best), Club side(medium standard) Herons (Seniors)Ladies teams. Social events. On onesheet men and women have put theirnames down to play together in theMixed Friendly matches against otherclubs. For me, that sums up the club.Mixed and friendly.Rod Armstrong

Message fromWestminsterThe phone hacking scandal dominatedthe last weeks of Parliament before thesummer recess. Apart from joining in thecondemnation of the actions andomissions of News Corporation, I raiseda wider issue about the public'sresponsibility during the urgent debatewhen Parliament was recalled. Whilst thepublic is rightly outraged at the hacking ofphones belonging to victims of crime, thepublic needs to take the opportunity tolook in a mirror and ask why there is suchan insatiable interest in the private lives ofothers which feeds the media beast wenow wish to slay. We need to not onlyprevent unlawful media activity butsupport a change in culture and valueswhich promotes the pursuit of truth andintegrity in the media. The most obviousway we can do this is as consumersmaking the decision to not buy or click onto media which exploits and underminesindividuals to feed prurient rather thangenuinely public interest.Two immediate local tasks over the
summer are first to support the campaignto give Woodcroft a long lease of life. Doget involved by signing the petition or whynot become a Friend of Woodcroft andsupport this wildlife haven in N21.

Hadley Wood’s JewishCommunity has areason to “Smile”Hadley Wood has a long history ofJewish families living in the area and hasa thriving community with Services heldevery Friday night and Saturday morning.In April 2010 Rabbi Yoni Birnbaum
joined this flourishing community alongwith his wife Elisheva and their threelovely children. During the last year theRabbi has worked very hard to continuewelcoming young families coming intoHadley Wood, inviting them for Shabbatlunches, organising events and creatingthe very successful Hebrew Classes orCheder, known as Smile. Smile is thename of the Cheder held everyWednesday evening from 4.30pm to6.15pm for two classes, one for ages 5-8and another for 9-12 year olds. The twohighly qualified young teachers, alreadyworking as Cheder teachers atweekends, enjoy the relationship theyhave built with the Hadley Wood Kids.Since joining Smile the children’s
knowledge and Hebrew reading hasimproved immensely and they enjoyevery minute of the class. “It’s really goodfun” ... “look what we’ve made” ... “can Igo again today?” are regular commentsfrom the children who now enjoy monthlyShabbat services dedicated to the

Horticultural UpdateThis year The Hadley Wood HorticulturalSociety has enjoyed a variety of talentedand entertaining speakers on many andvaried horticultural topics including The Ato Z of Garden History by Russell TBowes and Lost Gardens of Hertfordshireby Anne Rowe. Our last meeting beforethe summer was the traditional andalways successful Plant Sale, Supperand Social Evening this year with a RoyalWedding theme.Whilst many of us are busy in our
gardens during the summer we alwaysfind time for the annual coachouting. This year we visited two gardensin Kent. We started the day in Sandwichat The Secret Gardens - 3.5 acres ofstunning Lutyens and Jekyll designedgrounds surrounding a Lutyens manorhouse in the heart of Sandwich. Yellowand White Gardens, the Woodland,Kitchen, Vegetable, and Tropical Gardens,

a magnificent long border and a delightfultea room where we were served morningcoffee and biscuits on arrival. After lunchwe visited Great Comp, near Sevenoaksan exceptionally beautiful seven acregarden with sweeping lawns, formal areasand romantic ruins together with anextensive collection of exotic plants andthe acclaimed Dyson SalviaCollection. Many of the salvias areavailable from the nursery attached to thegardens. Our day concluded with awonderful cream tea served by the youngenthusiast team working with Mrs Dysonin The Old Dairy Tearooms. When wearrived back in Hadley Wood and thecoach driver opened the luggage hold it
looked like we had purchased the “LongBoarder” and folded it into the coach.
Our new season begins on Friday23rd September with Ken Collins talkingto us about The Gibberd Garden – themeeting starts at 8.00pm. We meet at StPaul’s Church Hall where non membersare always welcome. Look out for ourposters in Londis and on various noticeboards around the area.Gillian Henley
Barnet Market.Now over 800 years old Barnet markethas had its ups and downs. Currently it issuffering a down period. Hopefully notdown and out. Its history with somewonderful old photos can be seen on theFriends of Barnet website from which thissummary is taken. In 1199 King Johnissued a charter for the market which wasoriginally situated at the fork in the roadbetween what is now the High St andWood St. Later St Johns Church was builtimmediately to its north. Nearly finishedoff by the black death in 1350 the marketthen flourished and by the end of the 16thcentury was London’s biggest meatmarket. Gradually the main road to theNorth through Barnet became busier andthe blockage caused by the market at thetop of Barnet Hill became a problem. It
was therefore re-sited at the junction ofthe High St and St Albans Rd. By 1899 itwas a very busy cattle market managedby Bill Harding Young a local estate agentwho was absolutely dedicated to itssuccess. It continued in this role untilAugust 1959 by which time the cattlemarket had declined. It then became thestall market we all enjoyed, with up to 50stalls. Eventually in 1999 it was sold, astipulation being that the site mustcontinue as a stall market for 15 years (ieuntil 2014). Nothing much happened untilin 2005 the new owners were grantedplanning permission to re-develop thearea with the market on the ground floor,fourteen flats above and a car park for 27cars below. The stalemate continued untilJanuary 2008 when the market had tomove to the cramped quarters of theStapylton Rd car park to allow work to bedone on the site. They returned in

wonderful musical performance basedon Noah’s Ark. They were dressed andface painted as a variety of animals andas the Bible Story was read they sangseveral songs linked to the story.Afterwards they were each presentedwith a Bible and their Profile Books.These had been built up over the twoyears they had been with us andcontained their drawings, their writingsand photos of their many activities andoutings. They then adjourned to theChurch Hall for a special lunch party, anobstacle course challenge and finallysome tearful good-byes were said, withlots of promises to keep in touch.It is hard to believe that yet another
academic year has flown by and that in afew weeks the next generation will bearriving on the door step for their turn atPre-school, and so life goes on…………Additional celebrations were had when

In July2011 an extension of the planningpermission was applied for. At an angrymeeting in Hendon with seventysupporters of the Market crammed intothe council chambers the extension waspassed by one vote but only for a furthertwo years (very close to the time when thecovenant stipulating continuation of themarket expires). At this meeting the localBarnet MP Theresa Villiers deplored theten year stalemate. ‘I am concerned thatthe development proposed in the currentplanning consent would not provideadequate facilities to traders for parking,loading, unloading and storage. I alsowant to see the uncertainty surroundingthe future of Barnet Market brought to anend as quickly as possible. The marketowners were first granted planningpermission to redevelop the site over tenyears ago. Even their second permission(the one they are now seeking to extend)was granted long before the creditcrunch made financing suchdevelopments difficult’. She spokepassionately about the need forpreserving the market as a magnet forpeople shopping in Barnet.For those of you not already members

Gardening Tips for August
Due to the changing climate and weather, plants have beenparticularly affected by pests and disease. Thriving plantsare better able to resist problems, therefore it is important tomaintain a healthy garden. There are several ways in whichyou can ensure plants remain in top condition. Take care tochoose plants that are suited to each aspect of your gardenand to local conditions. It is rare to find perfect soil beforeplanting so prepare it well. Pay attention to watering andfeeding your plants so that they do not suffer from insufficient
or excessive water or nutrients. It is essential to weedregularly so that your plants do not have to compete with fastgrowing invaders for water and light.Diseases such as bacteria, fungi and viruses are
opportunists and some infect weak plants through existingwounds. Plants that are overgrown or planted too close toeach other often become weak and sickly with elongatedshoots as they fight for light.
