When my zeidy, Rabbi Yosef Y. Avtzon, was a child, he lived in Detroit,

Michigan. His father, Rabbi Meir Avtzon, would bring the family to spend Sukkos and Simchas Torah with the Rebbe.

One day in Tishrei, when my zeidy was seven years old, he was walking alone down Eastern Parkway. He looked up and saw that the Rebbe was walking—also alone—

toward him. The Rebbe took my zeidy's hand and asked him where he was

going. “I’m going to eat lunch,” my zeidy answered. The Rebbe asked my zeidy if he would like to do the Rebbe a favor. “Yes, of course!” my zeidy responded excitedly. The Rebbe then said, "If you would go back

to 770, learn for two minutes, and then go home to eat, it would give me much pleasure. Of course my zeidy did so.

Rivky: Hmm…I wonder what it must feel like to have a king. A real king, with a jewelled crown and a satin cloak…

Sruly: I know it’s not as exotic, but we do have a president, who wears suits and ties. I’m guessing that you’re thinking about the Alter Rebbe’s mashol of melech basadeh, the king in the field, right?

Chani: What king? What field?

Yitzi: Ooh, I know that mashol! The king lives in his glamorous palace with all of his guards, and it’s almost impossible to arrange an appointment with him.

Sruly: Then, he goes out into the field where anybody can meet him; he greets his people with a big smile and listens to their requests. I wonder, what would I ask the king?

Chani: Me too!... I wish we had a king.

Sruly: Of course we have one—Hashem! During Elul, Hashem comes close to us, and we can ask for whatever we need.

Chani: Hey, what’s that buzzing sound?

Yitzi: Look, a message just came in from Dr. Middos! Okay guys, listen up! Parshafier 5775 presents a revolutionary feature: the Parsha-Porter!

Rivky: The Parsha-Porter? How does that work?

Yitzi: I’m still reading! It says, “Based on data gathered by highly sensitive invisi-transmitters, Parshafier 5775 will teleport the squad to a destination where they will meet a guest that has been pre-selected by the Parshafier through a special algorithm. What will you ask Hashem for now that He’s in

the field?

Sruly: Look—there’s writing in the sky! It says, “Boruch haba King Souvrain.” The Parshafier brought us to meet a king—in the field! Wow, Sara sure runs fast. Oh, wait, why did she stop?

Sara: Erm, hi! Sorry about before. I was just so excited to meet the king that I ran as soon as I heard him coming. This is such an incredible experience…the most powerful man in this whole entire country will be taking the time to meet me! I want to look presentable. First, Rivky - Can you please help me with my hair?

Rivky: Sure! I think a French braid will really flatter your cheekbones. Let me make it for you!

Sara: Thanks! Ooh, I’m so excited. And nervous. I still can’t believe he’s coming! Isn’t it amazing? I feel so many things right now! I love the king, but I’m scared too! Does my hair look okay?

Chani: You look great!

Sara: Thanks! Well, I’m off to greet the king. I hope I make him proud...but whatever happens, it

was lovely meeting you!

Rivky: Thank you! Likewise!

Chani: Look, she’s meeting the king now! And he has such a big smile; his face is glowing. I wonder what she’s asking him.

Sruly: Chani, we have the exact same opportunity during Elul—but on a much greater level. Don’t you remember the mashol of melech basadeh? We can ask Hashem anything! Like King Souvrain, Hashem is listening to us and smiling!

Chani: If Hashem, who is the King of the whole world, wants to listen

to me, you’d better believe I’m going to run to Him! I’m going to request that Hashem helps me concentrate when I daven , and ask Hashem for Moshiach now!

Yitzi: Yeah, I really want to make Hashem proud! I’m going to ask Him to help me become the best soldier in His army!

King of all Kings is right here, waiting for us to accomplish our missions.

Remembering this promise helps us make the right decisions, giving us the

strength to fight our Yetzer Hara.

Grand OpeningOn Tes Vov Elul, the Rebbe Rashab announced that he was establishing a yeshiva where both Nigleh and Chassidus would be taught. What exciting news! A new era in learning Chabad Chassidus was about to begin... Before he established the yeshiva, the Rebbe Rashab decided to travel to the kevorim of the previous Chabad rebbeim. “With their brochos,” the Rebbe Rashab told his Chassidim, “the yeshiva will surely be a success.” Then, with great emotion, he declared, “The yeshiva will instill fine midos and a devotion to Chassidus in all of its talmidim.”

Eternal ChainAll Lubavitch schools are an extension of the Rebbe Rashab’s original Tomchei Temimim. Lubavitcher girls’ schools also stem from this; in fact, the first Chabad learning program for girls in Europe was called Achos Hatemimim, which later evolved into Beis Rivkah.

Naming CeremonyOn the night of Simchas Torah in Tof Reish Nun Tes (1898), one year after the founding of the yeshiva, the Rebbe Rashab was in a very happy mood. After dancing spiritedly, he announced that the yeshiva would be called Tomchei Temimim. Its purpose would be to unite the teachings of Nigleh, the revealed parts of Torah—Chumash, Gemora, Shulchan Aruch—with Chassidus. Bochurim who learned in the yeshiva would be called “temimim,” and the Rebbe Rashab promised that anyone who helped support the institution would have much success in their lives.
