Reapportionment Latino Population Growth

Latino population grows 43% from 2000 to 2010, with an estimated 1.5% undercount. Latinos prevent net population decline in IL, NJ, and NY.

Texas sees largest pop. increase in nation – 4.3 million. Latinos account for 65% of that growth.

Almost 1 in 4 youth (under 18) in the United States is Latino,

Reapportionment Latino Voter Impact – 2008

GOP Hispanic voters deliver critical win to McCain in Florida.

Democratic Latino voters sustain Hillary Clinton’s primary campaign.

Record Latino turnout of 9.7 million -- 28% increase over 2004.

Latinos help “flip” Electoral College votes to Obama in states such as Colorado, Florida, and New Mexico; and have impact in states such as Virginia.

Latino voters deliver victory to U.S. Senators Harry Reid and Michael Bennet.

Several GOP Latino milestones:

• Marco Rubio elected to U.S. Senate

• First Latino Governor of NV• First elected Latina Governor of

any state (NM)• Latino GOP Members of

Congress increased from 3 to 7, including the first Latino U.S. Representatives from Idaho and Washington.

Projected Latino Vote – 2012

The NALEO Educational Fund projects:• 12.2 million Latinos will cast

ballots in Election 2012 – an increase of 26% from November 2008.

• Latinos will account for 8.7% of all voters.

• Latinos will again be a decisive force in the race to White House, in addition to statewide and local elections across the nation.

Several of the most competitive states in the race to the White House are home to large numbers of Latino voters.

Nevada will also see one of the most competitive Senate races of 2012, where incumbent U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R) will face Congresswoman Shelley Barkley (D), who represents Nevada’s CD 1.

Consistent under-investment in Latino outreach by many candidates, political parties, and committees.

Regular use of immigration as a wedge issue – both to scapegoat, and lack of progress on CIR.

Political success for most candidates in 2012 requires Latino support, but meaningful Latino engagement low.

Without the invitation to participate and the information needed to do so, the Latino “vote gap” will persist.
