They’ve signed the mortgage documents, received their keys and a Bible, their first housewarming gift. After nearly three long years, San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity volunteers and staff have completed the most ambitious build in the history of the organization. On retiring from his medical practice, Dr. Bob looked in the ‘yellow pages’ to locate the nearest Habitat affiliate. He found SGV Habitat for Humanity, then located on Altadena Drive in Pasadena. “If Jimmy Carter can get involved after his retirement, so can I,” he said. One of the first drop-in volunteers, Bob would stuff envelopes, answer phones and do whatever was needed and more, including joining the Habitat Board, fundraising, and being Co-President.

As the Duarte Build began taking shape, he and his wife, Mary Jane, chaired and developed the Family Selection Committee, working together to select 16 wonderful, deserving families. Then, he worked tirelessly on the construction with the families, including a Buildathon of 4 homes in 9 days.

Quoting Janelle Williams, co-chair of the current Family Selection Committee, “They were my mentors. I can’t believe he is gone! Bob had a Heart of Gold.”

Our affiliate has truly been blessed with Bob’s presence. We will always have his legacy with us. Our tribute to him is to carry on with the Habitat Spirit building lives, families, homes and hope!

Given June 5, 2010 by Reverend Rich GarnerGlendale United Methodist Church

As we gather at both an ending and a beginning, we give thanks for your presence and promise, O God, through all of the days of preparation and work.As plans were drawn, you were here.As funding was offered, you were here.As concrete was poured, you were here.As walls were erected, you were here.As paint was applied, carpets laid, appliances installed, you were here.As ground was leveled, shrubs planted, windows cleaned, and door handles polished, you were here.

For it is through your Spirit, O creating God, that dreams form, property is found, people build, and houses become homes.Help us be attentive to this Spirit and responsive to it as well.

This morning, as we speak words, you are here.As keys are offered to families, you are here.As laughter erupts, tears of gratitude flow, food is shared, hands stretch out in thanks, you are here.As families begin their lives in these homes, you are here.

Wherever love is offered and received and offered yet again, you are here.

Today, you are here, you are here. Amen.

Thanks to you, our donors and volunteers, the Kenwood Homes were successfully completed and dedicated June 5th at the inspirational ceremony you can see in this centerfold!

Now we build on this success to ensure that ground is broken for the five new Geneva Homes, our first “green” build. To make certain that we reach the required $400,000 fundraising threshold

as quickly as possible, I’m asking each of you to make a designated gift for the Geneva Homes before September 1st and to secure at least one additional Geneva Campaign gift by that same date. Your enthusiasm and Habitat pride will make it easy to share this need with your friends, co-workers and family!

Thank you so very much for helping SGV Habitat for Humanity raise the balance of the required $400,000 for groundbreaking so we can build continuously and touch more lives.

With heartfelt appreciation,Sonja L. YatesExecutive Director
