Joan and Executive Director, Dr. Sonja Yates, shared the story of how Disney and Habitat have partnered in the past as well as their vision for funding future builds. The afternoon concluded with a deeply moving documentary of the Kenwood build created by Pam Remai and her husband Jefferson Palmer, who took photos of the Kenwood build from start to finish. This extraordinary photo documentary will be highlighted in the October issue of the Habitat Builder.

The day was filled with a spirit of good will, sharing and appreciation. As a special treat, Tom Bunn, the affiliate’s pro bono attorney, shared his musical talent on the piano. The Quiroz family from our

Meet our Coordinator of Support Services and

Marketing

Michael James McGowan VI is the most recent addition to the SGV Habitat for Humanity family, serving as the new Coordinator of Support Services and Marketing. Mike was born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania. He lived there for 10 years and decided he wanted a bit of adventure when searching for a college to attend. In 2006, his family moved to Eagle, Idaho, and he began his college career at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, California. He recently graduated with a B.A. in Graphic Design and a minor in Marketing. Mike is excited to use his Graphic Design and marketing skills to strengthen the organization and marketing outreach at SGV Habitat. He maintains the website, designs and publishes the newsletter, and effectively uses all the social media available to further benefit Habitat for Humanity—both with volunteer participation and finances. Aside from his work at Habitat, Mike enjoys reading, cooking, and spending time with loved ones. He also enjoys all things outdoors—mountain and road biking, spending time in the ocean, hiking, and snowboarding when there’s snow in the mountains. He also enjoys being an active participant with Baseline Community Church in Claremont.

“It’s been a quiet week…” These familiar words begin each week’s story about life in Lake Woebegon, the mythical hometown of Garrison Keillor, host of A Prairie Home Companion. Anyone who listens to Keillor’s stories knows immediately that the week has been anything but quiet. Lives have been changed, friends have supported one another through life’s trials and neighbors have celebrated life’s events with one another—hmmm! Sounds a bit like life in the San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity community! There’s one big difference between SGV Habitat and Lake Woebegon, though. The community of Habitat folks is not mythical—it’s very REAL! That real community has had an amazing year thus far. Lives have been changed. Of that, there

is no doubt. Fifteen hard-working families are happily ensconced in their new homes. They are learning about the inner workings of homeowner’s associations and mortgage payments. They are hanging pictures on walls that are their own. They are eating together at the same table at the same time. They are offering thanks for all their volunteer friends who helped build their new homes. Many more lives have been changed—those of our volunteers who helped build those 15 homes. Folks have learned new skills and have met new people who have become friends. The Habitat community has supported some of its members through life’s trials. We have been with our volunteers and families in times of loss and hardship. Our build sites have been a place where people have helped one another withstand the tough economic environment. Folks who have lost their jobs find fulfillment in working on the site and affirmation from their fellow volunteers. We have celebrated! Two new home dedications—at Sherman Avenue in Monrovia and at Kenwood Street in Glendale—celebrated the giving of keys to homeowners. There were lots of speeches, festive balloons, great food and enough smiles to fill a heart for a lifetime. There were tears of joy, as new homebuyers realized a long-time dream of home ownership. We celebrated in other ways, too. At our annual Volunteer Recognition event, people who have given many hours of service in many

Our affiliate is incredibly blessed to have a large volunteer pool—individuals, churches, companies, service clubs, friends and families are all well represented at our sites, in our office and at our ReStores. In response to these high numbers of volunteers, we have begun implementing new policies and procedures. Volunteer Orientations are now mandatory for potential volunteers. This ensures that all volunteers are educated in what Habitat for Humanity does, our local needs, and the procedures and rules that enable our work. Volunteer Orientations are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7pm at our office, located at 400 South Irwindale Avenue in Azusa. Secondly, we are making sure that continuing volunteers have completed all

necessary paperwork, including a Volunteer Information form. This allows us to properly track volunteer data for emergency response and to communicate with supporters and grant makers regarding the impact of community volunteers. Thirdly, our affiliate has recently joined VolunteerUP. VolunteerUP is an online volunteer management system where not only can you, the volunteer, better track your contact information and service hours, but you can also view a wider variety of volunteer opportunities and even sign up for them yourself! Scheduling through VolunteerUP is now a required step in the volunteer process for new and continuing volunteers. Please visit http://www.sgvhabitat.org/volunteer/faq to learn more! Volunteers make a world of difference! Our volunteers are truly appreciated!

Fast forward to 2012—the five families selected as Geneva home buyers have finished their “sweat equity” hours, and volunteers are following the landscape plan as they install donated trees and plant materials. The solar panels, donated and installed by SunGreen Systems, gleam on the rooftops of the new Geneva Homes. These panels will substantially reduce the electric bills for the five families in addition to contributing to the health of the environment. Final inspections will take place the following week with Certificates of Occupancy to be issued as soon as all inspections have been passed. Invitations have been mailed to all of the donors who made these five “green” homes possible, and the Geneva Homes Dedication Ceremony will take place when Geneva Street is closed to through traffic for a few hours the next Saturday. It will be a joyous day as keys are presented to five deserving families who have worked hard to achieve their dream of homeownership. Their hearts overflow with gratitude to the hundreds of donors and thousands of volunteers who helped to build

their homes. Some volunteers have already started work on the Community Garden located in the buffer zone between the freeway sound wall and the Geneva homes. Each Geneva homebuyer family will have a plot in this new Community Garden. The families are looking forward to planting tomatoes, beans, lettuce, herbs and other favorite vegetables. They are also looking forward to meeting neighbors who have plots in the new Community Garden. Please embrace this dream in 2010 by making your donation today. Your check or online donation, and support from your company, your church, or your service group will help to raise the remaining $242,000 in cash needed for this build. Dreams really do come true when good people work together to make them happen!

DREAMING ABOUT THE GENEVA HOMES . . .different ways were honored. The Ace Cain Humanitarian Award, named for the founder of the San Gabriel Habitat affiliate, honored Joan McCarthy, a La Canada resident, for her outstanding, long-term commitment to SGV Habitat. Joan has spent many hours building a partnership between the Disney organization and the Habitat community. Teams of Disney volunteers are on our building sites, and the corporation designates a portion of its charitable funding for building Habitat homes. The afternoon was made all the more special by the delicious refreshments provided by our newest homebuyers. We also celebrated at a special dinner, hosted by the Board of Directors, to honor the service of our “regulars”. These are people who are on every build offering their specialized construction skills and leadership. They teach volunteers the intricacies of electrical wiring, plumbing, drywall hanging, roofing and flooring. No speeches this night, just a lot of fun and fellowship and a way to say “thank you” for continuing service. Would you like to be part of this special, very real community? Visit our web site (www.sgvhabitat.org) to find out the many ways in which you can become involved—as a volunteer, as a supporter, through prayer, as a donor. We look forward to welcoming you!

FROM THE pRESIDENT

Joan Bouchard with 714 construction site volunteer hours and Fran Maliszewski with 523.75 construction site volunteer hours are the first women to earn this affiliate’s prestigious Loyal Order of the Bent Nail award. Joan has worked with SGV Habitat for Humanity for the past 5 years and has helped 15 families with building their homes. Fran has worked with San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity for the past 2 ½ years and with the Greater LA Habitat affiliate before that, helping 25 families achieve their dream of home ownership. The Bent Nail Award is an award given to those volunteers who have dedicated at least 200 hours of their time at build sites assisting families as they help build their new homes. Joan and Fran entertained me with their sense of humor, and I was humbled as I learned during this interview about their accomplishments. I asked both ladies what motivated them to become volunteers with Habitat in the first place. Joan stated that she had already raised her family and wanted to do volunteer work to occupy her free time. She also stated that as

a mother and wife she had fixed many things around the house. Habitat seemed like the ideal way to volunteer since it called for doing similar things to those she had already done as a “domestic engineer.” When asked the same question, Fran stated that she grew up in a single parent family, and that her mother never owned her own home due to financial reasons. Fran is especially drawn to the work of Habitat for Humanity
