CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES
The cond i t ion statement of weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks i n l ead ing c i t i e s shows
the fo l lowing p r i n c i p a l changes f o r the week ended J u l y 12: Decreases of $421 mi l l i on in
loans ad jus t ed , $518 m i l l i o n i n hold ings of U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s , and $1,926 mi l l i on
in U. S. Government demand d e p o s i t s ; and inc reases of $737 m i l l i o n i n demand depos i t s
ad jus t ed , and $127 m i l l i o n in t ime and savings d e p o s i t s .
Commercial and i n d u s t r i a l loans decreased in most d i s t r i c t s and a ne t of $66
m i l l i o n ; t h i s compares c l o s e l y with a decrease of $75 m i l l i o n dur ing the corresponding
week a year ago. However, t he se loans have decreased $617 m i l l i o n s ince t he f i r s t of t h i s
year i n c o n t r a s t t o an i nc rease of $915 m i l l i o n dur ing t h e comparable pe r iod in i960.
Loans t o b roke r s and d e a l e r s f o r purchasing or ca r ry ing U. S. Government and o ther
s e c u r i t i e s decreased $94 m i l l i o n . Loans t o nonbank f i n a n c i a l i n s t i t u t i o n s decreased $266
m i l l i o n ; t he se loans a re about $1,250 m i l l i o n lower than a year ago. Other loans decreased
$43 m i l l i o n dur ing t he week; r e a l e s t a t e loans increased $21 m i l l i o n .
Holdings of Treasury b i l l s decreased $437 mi l l i on , Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s i n -
creased $32 m i l l i o n , and the combined t o t a l of Treasury no tes and U. S. Government bonds
decreased $113 m i l l i o n .
Demand d e p o s i t s a d j u s t e d increased $131 m i l l i o n in t he San Francisco D i s t r i c t ,
and $115 m i l l i o n i n t he Cleveland D i s t r i c t , and by smal ler amounts i n t he o ther d i s t r i c t s .
Demand d e p o s i t s c r e d i t e d t o domestic banks increased $371 m i l l i o n . U. S. Government demand
depos i t s decreased in a l l d i s t r i c t s .
Borrowings of weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks from Federa l Reserve Banks decreased
$16 m i l l i o n and borrowings from o the r s decreased $4l8 m i l l i o n . Loans t o domestic com-
merc ia l banks decreased $546 m i l l i o n .
