For Sale Ornamental Turning Lathe No.2089 made in 1858 by Holtzapffel& Co.

Provenance:First listed on 14th July 1848

as sold for £57.-13.-0 to GeorgeC Atkinson Esq., Of Wylam Hall,Northumberland. He was theinventor of Atkinson’sReciprocator. This deviceconverts a continuous spiralmotion into waved lines and itbecame so popular that it wasincluded as an accessory in mostwell-equipped O T lathes madeby Holtzapffel and others. The 2nd owner was George’sson, Matthew Hutton Atkinson,of Windsor Terrace, Newcastle.It remained in the family after hisdeath and in 1920 it belonged toGeorge’s great granddaughter,Mrs Bridget House, of TwoSwans & Rainbow Farm, Murroe,Dunfanaghy, Donegal, Ireland. The third owner was Brian RHill, of High Grains, Bewcastle,Carlisle, who acquired the lathe inSeptember 1975. The 4th owner was Henry CWing Jr, of Greenfield,Massachusetts, USA, whoacquired the lathe on 8th January1977. On Henry’s death it passedto his son, Donald Wing, ofMarion, Massachusetts, andfollowing Donald’s death it isnow for sale. Current locationMaine, USA.
