OPTIMIZE END USER COMPUTING End User Computing (EUC) adoption is rapidly growing as businesses of all sizes
realize the benefits that a virtual desktop infrastructure can deliver. At the center of
the discussion is storage. It’s essential that a storage infrastructure be able to cost-
effectively deliver on EUC requirements for adequate capacity, IO performance, and
low latency demands - all while preserving the quality of the end user experience at
a reasonable cost. EMC® VNX® and VNXe® unified storage change the way that IT
works by providing high performance, scalability, and ease of use for centrally
managed desktops anywhere on the network.
EMC VNX UNIFIED STORAGE EMC VNX and VNXe are an ideal choices for VMWare® Horizon View™ because
they’re designed for performance at scale, efficiency, and easy to deploy and
manage. These VNX flash-optimized storage systems with multi-core optimization
deliver outstanding desktop performance at scale, support 100’s to 1000’s of
Horizon View desktops, and provide a unified (multi-protocol) platform for flexibly
configuring your virtual desktop VMs and user data requirements on the same
system. The power of the VNX Flash 1st design with multi-core optimization enables
you to efficiently run Horizon View in a mixed virtual application workload
environment. VNX/VNXe are optimized for virtualization, supporting Horizon View on
leading hypervisors (VMware, Microsoft, Citrix). VNX and VNXe combined with the
EMC FAST™ Suite unleash the power of flash technology optimizing the performance
of Horizon View environments while reducing TCO (cost/GB & cost/IOPS).
FAST SUITE: DESKTOP PERFORMANCE AT SCALE It’s essential that a storage infrastructure optimize read and write activities to
handle peak EUC workloads such as boot storms, AV scans, and patching. In a
traditional storage environment, customers would need to buy and provision
hundreds of high-performance drives to meet these workload demands. EMC Fully
Automated Storage Tiering (FAST) Cache leverages Flash technology to optimize
performance at scale and maximize storage efficiency by absorbing up to 80% of
IOs from desktop “storms” allowing Horizon View to scale from 100’s to 1000’s of
users. FAST Cache automatically moves hot data to flash drives for best
performance and to absorb spikes in I/O demand. It provides an all-flash layer of
cache for the most active data and then monitors usage patterns so that it can
intelligently and automatically move data in and out of this layer based on demand.
With just a little bit of Flash and FAST Cache, you can boot 1,000 Horizon View
desktops on a VNX Series system in as little as seven minutes while lowering
$/IOPS and $/GB.
SOLUTION OVERVIEW
EFFICIENCY As businesses deploy Horizon View, large scale desktop creation/cloning and
registration operations become complex management tasks involving multiple user
interfaces and skill sets. EMC Virtual Storage Integrator (VSI) is an EMC plug-in
framework for VMware vSphere™ 5 with an intuitive, easy-to-use interface. Used with
VNX, it simplifies and automates the creation/provisioning and registration of multiple
VMware virtual desktop machines. It leverages VNX and VNXe storage efficiency
technologies (exploiting the fact that most desktops are using less than 50% of their
local storage capacity) to deploy desktops from a single master virtual machine, store
Master and Desktop virtual machines in a NFS Datastore, and delivers a single pane of
glass for viewing virtualization and storage array metrics.
FLEXIBILITY The VNX and VNXe support multiple protocols, giving you the flexibility in a single
storage platform to configure and consolidate your Horizon View environment, whether
it requires NFS, iSCSI, FCoE, or FC for your infrastructure VMs and user data file
shares. This allows you to choose the best combination of block and file storage for
your Horizon View environment that meets your performance and cost requirements.
VSPEX VSPEX® the industry leading reference architecture - delivers Proven Infrastructures
delivered by EMC channel partners to provide simple, efficient, and flexible
deployments for 100’s to 1000’s of VMware Horizon View virtual desktops on VNX and
VNXe. These proven infrastructures are well documented with reference architectures,
sizing and deployment guides and sizing tools - enabling any size customer to bring a
VMware Horizon View environment to full production in the shortest possible time
tnefficiently and affordably.
