TASK 1 - DEVELOPMENTCommand line editor - A way of which the user is able to interact with a computer program through the use of commands that appear as lines of text. The command line editor (CLE) simply edits the lines of text. During the early days of the CLE, interactions would have been carried out on typewriters. Editing would be conducted by humans. As the CLE developed through time, early computer systems often used teleprinter machines as a way of interaction. As more time passed, development of the CLE was less restricted due to the improvement of hardware and software features. More advanced features were added onto the way of which the CLE operates.

Graphical user interface (GUI) - A user interface that consists of a user interacting with electronic devices through graphical icons. These interfaces differ from text-based interfaces. GUI includes the most common components of any interface device. This type of interface includes the hardware components of a mouse and keyboard, with added features of keyboard shortcuts as well as other pointing devices. GUI started off as a program, called sketchpad, made in 1963. The idea of this program revolved around engineering drawings. This program was known to have text based hyperlinks. As interface devices developed, more graphical elements were included, such as windows, menus and buttons. In this day and age, companies such as apple and windows develop previous ideas in order to improve GUI.

Web user interface (WUI) - Web user interfaces are where the interaction between humans and machines take place. User interfaces started off as batch interfaces. Batch interfaces were around during 1945-1960s, during those times computing power was very expensive and less common to have. (CLIs) evolved from batch monitors connected to the system console. However user interfaces then evolved and the added hardware components of a keyboard and mouse improved the quality of interaction between the user and machine. GUIs are also a huge feature within user interfaces and evolved, as well, alongside web user interfaces.

SOCIETYUsability - Human computer interactions has improved the usability of devices. Learning how to use certain devices has been made to be easier and more simple. Because of HCI devices now require less knowledge, increasing their use in society. Touch screens as well as voice control make HCI easier to learn.

Specialised interfaces - There are interfaces, specifically GUIs, that of which are made for those who may be deaf or visually impaired. Those who are visually impaired have residual vision. Specialised GUIs generate certain patterns of colours and shapes. These patterns will often be made specific to the user’s vision. Specialised GUIs impact many of those in society, increasing it’s value and worth. It’s impact on society will be extremely positive as it helps those with certain conditions. Specialised interfaces have also been made for hostile environments and hospitals. Back in 2009, a hand free motion capture device, named the kinect, was made for those with disabilities. There

are also eye recognition systems that allow people who are paralysed or disabled to interact with technology.

Complexity - HCI has increased the complexity of devices and how their made. Certain devices, like the vr headset, convey the complexity of thought which comes behind making products and devices. The vr headset is a device that provides virtual realty. The fact that devices are trying provide an element of reality shows how HCI has made devices more complex as well increase the usability of other devices. This sort of augmented reality is mostly used on creating outstanding gaming experiences. Virtual reality has been used amongst today’s gaming consoles such as the playstation 4. There are many virtual reality games, such as beat saber, tetris effect, doom vfr, the lab, the climb and star trek: bridge crew. The objective of using augmented reality is to make games more dynamic as well as interesting. It may require more body movement and exercise. Unlike other type of games, these requirements will add different elements to the game.

The Internet - Users are able to communicate and share through websites and networks. The internet makes it possible so that these thing are done quickly and efficiently. The internet has many websites and supports the idea of communication across society. The internet has a positive impact on society because one can find out about something quickly and efficiently. The internet is also beneficial for those who are disabled as they aren’t required to got the library in order to find out certain information.

Game Controllers - Gaming controllers have evolved through time, starting off with a big and bulky appearance. The number of joysticks and buttons have changed over time, starting off with only one button and one joystick. Controllers of this day and age have been made to create a brand new and improved gaming experience. Game controllers have had a positive impact on society, providing a different way to socialise with friends. Due to this impact on society, people are now able to join together and play through certain gaming experiences that are also made to be realistic.

Remote Controls - Remote controls are used to navigate through a device. Devices that it can navigate through include televisions, game consoles and toys. This has an impact

due to the fact that on televisions one can change the channel through a click of a button. On army vehicles, those are able to use remote controls that can turn these vehicles on or off. Remote controls will make those vehicles safer and more reliable to use. Money is also saved as fuel and larger vehicles aren’t as required.

Data Logging - Data logging is carried out on many devices, such as phones and computers. Data loggers provide information on the temperature and humidity. Data loggers analyse data and store it afterwards. It’s impact on society is to make it possible for people to find out the weather without using the television or internet.

Fly by wire - Fly by wire is used by pilots in airplanes, the fly wire is an auto-pilot system that flies the plane once the pilot comes across a problem . This will have a positive effect on society as it will make flights safer and more reliable. Making people feel more confident about flying. This will cause more of those in society to go on flights.

ECONOMYAn Individual’s Productivity - A way that HCI has impacted the economy is through increasing the productivity of an individual. This is achieved by speeding input. An example of how HCI has speed up input is the barcode readers used in supermarkets and shopping centres, barcode readers increase the productivity of an individual because the cashiers aren’t required to provide the barcode number. HCI will also be an impact through an increased automation of outputs. This will allow more companies to save money as employees aren’t required. Companies will only be required to pay for repairs, having an impact as well as benefiting the economy.

Text Readers - Text readers have an effect on the economy for those who have problems with speech or vision. A text reader is able to say, aloud, what the user wrote down. This will have an effect on the economy as a speech impaired user will be able to use the text reader to communicate with other people face to face. There are also advanced text readers which can translate what the user wrote into another language. For example, if the user types in english the text reader is able to say it in french. This will increase the money coming into the economy as text readers are useful for

communications, text readers will then be high in demand. This may then also help particular companies and businesses grow or expand.

Voice Input - Voice input is mainly required when using your phone to send text messages or browse the internet. Voice input can impact the economy as they can be used for those who are visually impaired when coming across doors and lifts. Instead of pressing buttons, those who are visually impaired can command where the lift goes through voice.

Thought input - Thought input is made to help those who are paralysed or in wheelchairs. A person with thought input, on a wheelchair, is simply able to think that he wants move and will actually move. This will help the economy as it help those with disabilities carry out jobs and activities.

Mobile Communications - Mobile communications helps people to communicate with others around the world. This has benefited the economy as it allows companies and businesses to expand themselves and communicate over specific deals. This can help those earn money and successfully progress in their chosen field of profession/work.

CULTUREMobile computing - Mobile computing is when one uses a computing device when on the move. Mobile computers can come as laptops, tablets or smartphones. This will

have an impact on culture as people will be able to get information on particular cultures wherever they are and whenever they want. Mobile computing also comes with mobile translators, in which allow those to communicate with others from different cultures.

Mobile Entertainment - This type of HCI has a positive effect on culture as it includes films and documentaries from other cultures. This will make people more knowledge and aware of other cultures. Through mobile entertainment people have been able to communicate because of translators that also prevent language barriers. This means that those are even able to watch films in other languages because subtitles are available.

Domestic appliances - Domestic appliances have now been made so that people are now spending less time learning how to use them. HCI has made everyday activities much easier.

Games - HCI has contributed into making a new gaming culture that of which involves multiple languages and countries. Gaming has made it possible for people of different backgrounds and cultures to play together and work together as a team. Gaming also has a competitive scene that supports the art of collaboration and team building.

Deskilling work - Deskilling work is replacing someone’s job with a machine that is able to do the job with more speed and efficiency. It works out more cheaper. Deskilling work will have an impact on culture because the level of unemployment will dramatically increase. This will have a negative effect on culture as it will make individuals feel worthless because they are replaced by machines.

Developing nations - Nations where in which the average income is much lower than the average income of other countries and nations. The quality of technology will be much less than the quality of technology in other countries. This will decrease a developing nation’s potential to excel in business and making money. A developed nation’s waste is taken to a developing nation. Therefore it will have a negative effect on the nation’s culture and well being because waste consists of harmful chemicals that can end up causing disease and illness.
