NRPA EVENT MANAGEMENT SCHOOL 

Mark Pinney recently attended the NRPA  Event Management School from Jan. 15 – 20,  in Oglebay, West Virginia. He                    attended a variety of sessions ranging from: Sponsorships Sales, Event Budgeting and  Management, Building a                        Successful Volunteer program, Surveys & Evaluations,                           Merchandise Programs, Food and Beverages Programs, Social Media Ideas and much more. There were 157 delegates at this conference and 97 of them were first‐year students.

COMMUNITY RECREATION 

Registration has begun!  

Registration for Winter/Spring             

programs began Tuesday, Jan. 3. We 

expect the courses to reach and in 

some cases exceed the minimum 

number of students required.                  

Programs include Babysitting               

Workshops, Pediatric CPR & First 

Aid, ArtZ muti‐media  art, Young 

Rembrandts drawing, five different 

series of Bricks 4 Kidz S.T. E. M               

programs, Chess Workshops and the                 

Challenge Island S.T.E.A. M.               

programs. In addition we are                    

partnering with Mad Science of  

Central Virginia to offer one of 

their many hands on science labs. 

It has been  over 15 years since 

we offered this.   

Another new partnership has 

been forged with JumpStarz. This 

organization uses double‐dutch 

jump rope instruction to                        

emphasize fitness, nutrition and 

confidence.  This past fall we               

introduced Capoeira an                      

Afro‐Brazilian art form that com‐

bines dance, theatre,  music, art, 

acrobatics and  self‐ defense.  We 

did not have the success we 

had hoped for be we have            

decided to pick another           

location and try it again. Fingers 

Crossed!

Day Time Fitness 

Wednesday Afternoon Pinochle Club 

Bensley seniors are determined to 

conquer those New Year resolutions! 

Our fitness instruction, Rhesa Allen 

helps them workout.  

The Day Time Fitness program offers 

classes for all fitness levels. Classes 

meet Monday‐Thursdays.  

Aerobics,  9:30‐10 a.m.  

Body Toning, 10‐10:30 a.m.  

Chair Fitness, 10:45‐11:30 a.m.  

Participants are welcome to attend as 

many classes as they wish for the low 

monthly fee of $25. Details: 275‐5321.  

ETTRICK COMMUNITY BUILDING 

The Pinochle Club began over 25 

years ago with a group of               

women who liked to play the 

game. The women meet  

monthly to play. Doris Ridley is 

the only remaining original 

member.

 HISTORY 

Chesterfield Museum Program 

Jason Lunze, a third generation              

Horologist, presented on Jan. 23 about 

Sir Richard Grenville’s flagship.                      

The lecture was based on                                   

archaeological evidence from the              

excavations of the Sea Venture and the 

Princess Channel Wreck . The  lecture 

focused on the 16th century British ship 

Tyger that was temporarily stranded 

on Ocracoke in 1585. Jason discussed 

how to spot British shipwrecks, early 

navigation practices and why so many 

early colony  vessels were lost. 

Magnolia Grange Lecture 

Time for Stories was held  at 

the County Museum on Jan. 

21. Children  listened to stories 

about old trees, traced leaves, 

and visited the 200‐year old 

oak tree outside the muse‐

um. Families also enjoyed             

visiting the museum and old 

jail after the program. This 

program was  designed for                     

preschool aged children and their           

parents/guardians.

HENRICUS HISTORICAL PARK 

Henricus interpretation staff visits Stratford Hall

discuss farm animal husbandry and 

agricultural methodologies of the 

18th century in contrast to those 

of the 17th century.
