Understanding Infertility

Hydrosalpinx is a fluid-filled fallopian tube, which may cause ectopic pregnancy. Presence of a hydrosalpinx is associated with a 50% lower success rate among women undergoing IVF.

TREATMENT: A hysterosalpingogram can evaluate the tubes and their overall shape. Hydrosalpinges can be removed laparoscopically.

Uterine septum is a wedge-like wall at the top of the uterus, which protrudes into uterine cavity: Women with a uterine septum are at a significantly higher risk for miscarriage and infertility.

TREATMENT: Uterine septum can be removed hysteroscopically. This procedure does not require any incisions.

Adhesions are organs or structures within the pelvis that are stuck together. They may prevent the sperm from reaching the egg or impair the ability of an egg to reach the tube after ovulation.

TREATMENT: Depending on the type and severity of the adhesions, hysteroscopy, laparoscopy or a combination of both may be used in treatment.

Patient Story

o Ljubica had LAAM myomectomy for her fibroid and then a subsequent polyp removal at CIGC. She did not need additional treatments, Ljubica got pregnant shortly after her procedures. She welcomed baby Aleksandra on October 24, 2014.

“I want to encourage other women to explore all possibilities. I know now what a gift Aleksandra is. You don’t fully realize it until you hold her in your arms. I need to thank Dr. MacKoul and his colleagues for helping me have my little girl.”

Ljubica and her husband had tried fertility treatments unsuccessfully for years. In her case, she required surgery to remove a fibroid and a uterine polyp before beginning in vitro fertilization (IVF).
