GVI Fiji Donation Report Global Perspectives Annual Project
Stellys Secondary School
March 2015
Stellys Secondary School is located in Victoria, British Colombia, Canada. Each year the Global Perspectives class travels to a developing country to carry out a large scale project to help one community. The Grade 11 and 12 classes, guided by their teachers, led a fundraising effort that raised 15,000 CAD for GVIs community development project in the Dawasamu District. After liaising with key community members on how best to utilize this donation, GVI identified five key projects that focused on improving school infrastructure and the provision of water, sanitation and hygiene facilities.

Initial Assessment
Dawasamu Primary School The kindergarten at DPS is located in an unused teachers quarters. The building was in disrepair, with rotting walls and a rusting roof, making it an unsafe environment for students to learn in.
In addition to the required structural improvements, the Kindergarten also had no facilities for interactive learning or outdoor play. This was identified as a key area for improvement as learning through play is an integral part of early childhood development.
Navunisea District School The kindergarten at NDS had a designated classroom but the rooms interior and walkway access were in desperate need of repair. The rotting walkway became extremely slippery when wet and the classroom itself was missing wall panels, the paint was flaking and the flooring no longer covered the entire room.
As with DPS, the Kindergarten at NDS also lacked areas for outdoor and interactive learning.
Dawasamu Secondary School In 2014 DSS received a government grant to carry out refurbishments, however there was not enough funding to complete the whole school. The remaining school building that was left un-renovated needed new windows and a fresh coat of paint on both the interior and exterior walls. The guttering was also in disrepair, causing pools of stagnant water to collect outside the school building, creating a health hazard.
Furthermore, there were no adequate toilet facilities for the students at DSS. The existing toilet block suffered from consistent leaks, which resulted in continuous flooding and an unsanitary environment for the students.
Silana Village The 175 villagers of Silana rely on one small dam as their source of fresh water. This water is piped into a cement holding tank, then down to the village to be used for drinking, bathing, cooking and washing. However, historically the existing holding tank had been extremely hard to keep clean, gathering algae and sediment. As water from the holding tank is the villages primary source of drinking water, this posed a serious risk to the communitys health.

The Impact 2 primary schools, 1 secondary school, 1 village, over 400 people The work that Stellys Secondary School and GVI carried out achieved the following: Improved sanitation and hygiene for 195 secondary
school students through the provision of waterless composting toilets
Added a collection system so that 5,200 litres of water can be safely stored for drinking
Ensured a safe and consistent source for drinking water for the 175 people of Silana Village
Improved the classroom environment for 195 secondary school students and 58 kindergarten students
Promoted early childhood development and learning through play by creating outdoor play areas for 58 kindergarten students;
These projects have permanently improved available infrastructure in the Dawasamu District and will have a long-term impact on the children and community members of the region. This project has also helped to provide the students of Stellys Secondary School with a valuable and direct insight into the processes and challenges involved with international community development projects.
