Shri Akhtar Hussain, Enforcement Officer, Guwahati MunicipalCorporation retired on the 31st of March, 2017. Shri Hussain waseffective in various evictional activities ranging from illegal settled shopsand vendors to illegally installed hoardings and banners. He was alsoinfluential in curbing illegal encroachments of streets and byelanes in thecity. Shri Akhtar Hussain had a crucial role to play in decreasing themenace of unattended cattle in the streets of city. Guwahati MunicipalCorporation wishes all the best for his future.

An exposure visit was organised on 21st March, 2017 by the Central Institute of Plastic Engineering andTechnology (CIPET) for Guwahati Municipal Corporation as directed by the National Mission Director of Swachh

Exposure Visit of GMC Officials to CIPET - PWMC

Bharat Mission (U). The exposure visit was conducted in order to understand the requirements of GuwahatiMunicipal Corporation and also for the demonstration of the plastics recycling machinery and equipment. Anotherimportant objective of the visit was to get an insight of the assistance by CIPET which can be provided for themanagement of the plastic waste generated in Guwahati city. The exposure team consisted of five members:

• Shri Deepankar Kakati – OSD, Project Management Cell• Shri Manojit Bujarbaruah – Executive Engineer, Conservancy Cell• Shri Bhaben Sarma – Consultant, Paschim Boragaon• Shri Santosh Biswa, - Project Engineering Specialist, Project Management Cell• Shri Tapash Kalita – Architect, Project Management Cell

The team was greeted by Shri Th. Ibotomba Singh, Director and Head, CIPET, Guwahati. Ameeting was held in the Conference Room of PWMC-CIPET. Officials of CIPET Dr. Harekrishna Deka (TrainingOfficer – CIPET) and Shri Rajib Kumar Das (Training In-Charge, PWMC-CIPET) were also present at themeeting.

It was learnt that plastic wastes go through variousprocesses such as sorting, grinding, washing, etc before being converted into palettes by the Extruder PalletizerCombination Equipment. After the granules are converted to palettes, they can be moulded into various products.The products range from buckets and plastic bowls to litter bins, flower pots and plastic film, etc. However, thefacility is primarily a training institute and is not equipped with the infrastructure for treating the entire plasticwaste generated in Guwahati city.

Namami Brahmaputra River Festival 2017

The Namami Brahmaputra River Festival', branded as the biggest river festival of India in theNorth East was inaugurated by Hon’ble President Pranab Mukherjee in presence of Bhutan's Hon’ble PrimeMinister Tshering Tobgay and Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam. The NamamiBrahmaputra Festival which started from 31st March, 2017 and continued till April 4 comprised of several culturalprogrammes including traditional exhibitions and film shows. This river festival was organised in the 21 districtsof Assam through which the mighty Brahmaputra river flows. The river is intrinsic to the economic and socio-of Assam through which the mighty Brahmaputra river flows. The river is intrinsic to the economic and socio-cultural aspects of the state and the same is showcased in the Namami Brahmaputra Festival.

The Guwahati Municipl Corporation in this regard was given the responsibility of maintainingcleanliness at the venue of the festival and all around the city. An entire action plan was prepared where executiveEngineers, Assistant Engineers and Junior Technical Officers were given duties at the venue. This team wasmonitored by senior officials of GMC. The team was also accompanied by Office Assistants. Further, the GuwahatiMunicipal Corporation was also given the responsibility of installing standees every day of the event for thewelcome of dignitaries visiting Guwahati for the Namami Brahmaputra Festival.

Although heavy rainfall was an obstacle in the scheduled functioning of the festival, the event wasvery much successful in promoting tourism of the Brahmaputra, the rich culture and untouched natural beauty ofAssam.

In an innovative step taken by Guwahati Municipal Corporation, an Air Conditioned BusShelter was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mayor, Shri Mrigen Sarania in presence of Shri Monalisa Goswami, IAS,

AC Bus Shelter Inaugurated

Shelter was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mayor, Shri Mrigen Sarania in presence of Shri Monalisa Goswami, IAS,Commissioner, GMC and other senior officials of GMC on the 24th March, 2017. The AC Bus Shelter willprovide a relief to the bystanders waiting for buses, wingers and other transports travelling to parts outsideGuwahati.

The AC bus shelter at Khanapara is first of its kind in the Northeast India. It is constructed inPPP mode with 100% cost borne by the PPP partneer, M.S. Mahalaxmi Group. The cost of construction andoperation and maintenance is to be recovered through display of advertisements in the premises. Buscommuters especially long distance travellers to Upper Assam can use the bus shelter without paying any usercharge. Facility for drinking water, CCTV camera, Coffee and light snacks is also made in the bus shelter forthe comfort of the passengers.

celebrated the International Women’s Day on 8 March,2017 at the Community Hall, Garage Branch, GuwahatiMunicipal Corporation. A special free Health Check UpCamp was organised for the people living in and aroundthe Solapara and Morashali. The Health Camp wasmainly targeted for the people living in slums around theplace.

A special programme on WomenEmpowerment was also organised where a Self HelpGroup by the name of Grihalakshmi SHG was felicitatedon their woks of social upliftment and Swachh Bharat.The programme was attended by the Hon’ble Mayor,Shri Mrigen Sarania, Deputy Mayor, Smt. Bijuli KalitaMedhi and ward councillors. Several senior officials ofMedhi and ward councillors. Several senior officials ofGuwahati Municipal Corporation were also present at theprogramme. There was a vast attendance of people livingin the surrounding places of the Solapara and Morashali.

The Medical Officer, GMC also shedlight on the importance of adopting preventive measuresagainst Dengue. There was also special screening ofAwareness Visuals on the usage of Toilets and keepingthe surroundings clean and hygienic.
