Decorate a Christmas tree with a family in need and help put some things under the tree that you can afford.

Take a parent or guardian and their children out shopping. Buy each of them a gift, whatever fits their needs and your means. Show kindness and caring and the children will feel comfortable and happy with you.

If you aren't spending Christmas with your family, you could help to serve at a free Christmas Day dinner hosted by a church or organization. You'll find that filling plates with holiday food can be a joyful experience for you as well as the recipients.

Call the Salvation Army or other non-profit organizations in your area. Many need extra help during the Christmas season and can gladly find something worthwhile for you to do.

Volunteer at a hospital or senior center. Many individuals don't have a family and would love to have someone to talk to on Christmas. Visiting can brighten the lives of others and even start friendships.

Find a food shelter and help distribute food or clean up after dinner is served. Shelters rely on volunteers, and regular volunteers may not work during Christmas.

Hello Friends,

Holiday traditions – most homes have them. This is true in our family as well. Although we technically work together, the three of us do not get to spend much time together at work. With Gutterman days always being so hectic - we truly appreciate the holiday season to be able to spend time with each other outside of work – celebrating our family traditions – Dana's delicious cooking, secret Santa gift exchange, our family's yearly poem and mom giving gifts to everyone even though that is against our rules. We get to spend some time “catching up” with our family members and review the year and what has transpired with everyone. It is a great time that we look forward to each year.

So whatever your family tradition we hope that you enjoy it.

Gutters are one thing on your home that many times get little to no maintenance. Whether your home is directly surrounded by trees or in a new development, you need to maintain your gutters at least one time per year. The obvious is that tall trees will create clogged gutters and therefore chances for water to overflow over the gutters and get inside your home.

Fall gutter cleaning should be done after about 80% of the large debris has fallen. But even if you don't have trees, periodically your gutters need to be re-secured to the house, properly sloped and checked for leaks in seams and corners. In the winter months, gutters have snow and ice accumulation and the additional weight can cause the gutters to pull away from the fascia board they are hung on. This is why cleaning and re-tightening is so critical.

On average gutters should be replaced at least every 12 -15 years to ensure best results but in the interim – bi-annual maintenance is the best way to preserve your gutters. Call today to inquire about gutter cleaning and annual maintenance.

Job Spotlight

Let Me Breathe: The Importance ofGood Roof Ventilation

Many companies looked at this roof and couldn't offer the correct solution to why all of the sheathing had deteriorated. Our estimators brought the problem into our Thursday morning meeting where the Gutterman team works together to strategize and problem solve some of our harder jobs! We decided that more investigation was needed. Why were those dormers built on the back of the roof? (This is a very well built custom home from the 70's where all of the details were carefully planned out and it was pretty “cutting edge” at the time since it had an attic AC unit installed as well). Additionally we were told the HVAC unit had also failed in the past few year's.

A second visit to the home and a careful inspection of the attic revealed the secrets to the degradation of the homes systems. The previous owners had added 10" of rolled insulation on top of the existing cellulose insulation - trapping a lot of the heat and the dormer vents had cardboard tapped to the insides - closing them off in the winter. In the transition of the sale, the new owners were unaware that the cardboard needed to be removed during the warm months. So in fact the roof had no ventilation at all. The HVAC company pulled the cardboard down and left it in the attic when replacing the unit.

In addition to installing lifetime warranted CertainTeed Highland Slate shingles, Gutterman decided to replace all the roofs sheathing with TechSheild OSB Radiant barrier aluminum shielding sheathing. This old technology (recently reintroduced) retracts the suns heat rays from penetrating into the home. We cut 2" soffit vent holes every 12" around the perimeter of the homes' soffit for cool air intake. For exhaust of the heat, we

installed Air Vent Shingle over ridge vent. We also rebuilt the dormers and installed one gable fan for the hottest months of the year and set the thermostat to a very high setting so the fan would not run too often - interfering with the natural convection we created. We had found our solution! Sometimes the right recipe for a solution is one part home science, one part CSI investigation, and two parts just caring about doing the job right. The Bakers, their new roof, and HVAC unit have been eased by our solution!

If you find yourself in a s i m i l a r s i t u a t i o n , scratching your head for a solution we can help! We are happy to discuss your problems, simply call or send an email and we will work with you to find a solution.
