2016-17 GUSTAVUS MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTESSETTING THE SCENEThe Gustavus men’s basketball team hosts its home and Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Con-ference opener at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday against Concordia College. The Gusties enter the contest with a 0-2 overall record, while the Cobbers are 2-2 overall. Gustavus most recently lost 90-78 at Simpson College on Saturday, while Concordia defeated St. Scholastica 80-64 Saturday.

THE SERIESSaturday’s game marks the 179th meeting all-time between the Gusties and Cobbers on the hardwood. Gustavus holds a 113-65 advantage in the all-time series, but the Cobbers have won the past four meetings. It was a historic matchup in the last meeting on Feb. 6, 2016, as the Gusties came out on the short side of a 114-107 double overtime decision at Concordia. It was the first double overtime game played by Gustavus since Feb. 1, 1989, and second overtime loss of the season. Gary Cooper was the player of the game as he led all scorers with a career-high 39 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the field. The senior wing made 14-of-15 free throws and led the team in rebounds (6) and assists (4). Cooper’s 39 points were the most scored by a Gustie since Seth Anderson’s program record 45 points against Buena Vista on Nov. 15, 2011. The 39-point mark was the most in a MIAC game by a Gustie since D.L. Smith scored 41 against Minnesota-Duluth on Jan. 1, 1957.

ABOUT THE COBBERSConcordia has begun its season with a 2-2 overall record with wins over Crown (88-64) and St. Scholastica (80-64) and losses to Minneso-ta-Morris (71-70) and Minnesota State-Moorhead (107-74). Through four games, Austin Nelson and Dylan Alderman lead the Cobber offense. Nelson averages 16.5 points and 5.0 rebounds, while Alderman averages 11.0 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. Nelson is a three-point threat, having made 13-of-29 threes (44.8%), and Alderman has done a good job of drawing fouls as he is 21-for-28 from the free throw line.

LAST TIME OUT The Gustavus men’s basketball team was unable to slow down Simpson’s late second half surge Saturday, dropping a 90-78 decision to fall to 0-2 overall. The Gusties came within six points of the lead midway through the second half, but the Storm were able increase their lead to double digits and held on to a comfortable advantage the rest of the way.

Peter Kruize (Sr., St. Peter, Minn.) led all scorers with a career-high 27 points on an efficient 10-of-16 shooting from the floor. He also made 7-of-9 free throws and hauled in 11 rebounds for the second double-double of his career. Riley Shar-bono (So., Marshall, Minn.) was also productive on offense, scoring 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. The Marshall product made 4-of-7 three-pointers in a game-high 35 minutes played.

Gustavus started the game on the right foot, making its first two shots from the floor and another two from the charity stripe for a 7-4 lead, but the home team answered with an 11-2 run to take a 15-9 lead. The Gusties rattled off eight straight points to take a 17-15 lead, but once again the Storm answered and claimed a three-point advantage at 20-17. The Black and Gold captured a 21-20 advantage at the 8:44 mark of the first period, but that would be its last of the game as the Storm went into the locker room with a 46-38 lead at halftime.

The Gusties cut their deficit to four points twice within the first three minutes of the second half before Simpson went on a 16-6 run over the next five minutes for a 68-54 advantage with 12:26 remaining in the game. Gustavus responded with eight unanswered points to come with six at the 10-minute mark, but the Storm were able to re-gain a double digit lead and held on for the win.

Gustavus shot 45.9 percent from the field, while Simpson shot 53.4 percent. The Gusties outre-bounded the Storm 36-32, but committed more turnovers, 8-7.

Mark Hanson is in his 27th season as the head coach of the Gustavus Adolphus men’s basketball program for the 2016-17 season. During his time as head coach, Hanson has directed his teams to 11 NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances, including reaching the Final Four for the first time in school history and placing second in the nation during the 2002-03 season.

In the 2010-11 season, Hanson earned his 400th career victory with an 89-78 win over Saint Mary’s on Gus Young Court. He became the 65th coach in NCAA Division III history, and 31st active coach, to reach the 400-win milestone. Research indicated that Hanson was the 14th fastest coach to reach 400 victories in Division III history, and became just the sixth coach from the MIAC to reach the 400-win plateau.

Hanson, who has compiled a 480-230 overall record at Gustavus prior to the 2016-17 season, including a 362-159 record in the MIAC, has won seven MIAC Championships, and has been named MIAC Coach of the Year eight times. He has helped guide Gustavus to the MIAC Playoffs 21 times, reaching the finals 14 years and winning the MIAC Playoff Championship on seven occasions. His teams have reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament six times and the Elite Eight three times. Hanson has coached 30 players who have garnered 50 All-Conference honors, four MIAC

Players of the Year, eight players who have received 13 all-region honors, and three All-Americans. In addition, Hanson has coached two Jostens’ Award Finalists (Trevor Wittwer, 2008; Marc Newell, 1999), which recognizes the top Division III men’s basketball player in the nation based on academics, athletics, and community involvement.

Hanson is a 1983 Gustavus graduate and the basketball program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,774 points. He was a two-time NAIA All-America and GTE Academic All-America selection, a three-time Gustie MVP and a four-time All-MIAC selection.

A long-time outdoor enthusiast, Hanson earned his master’s degree in experiential education at Mankato State University and teaches outdoor education classes in the health and exercise science department. He is also the outdoor program director at the college.

Hanson, a native of Dodge Center, Minnesota, lives in St. Peter and has two children, Hans and Annika.
