President’s Welcome Good day comrades!

I want to welcome you all again to the Gustavson CORE; and yes you have heard that welcome before, and maybe it is worn, but hopefully I have yet to wear out my welcome.

By this point you have a taste of what lies ahead of you for the next seven months, and hopefully, it hasn’t caused any aneurisms or transfers. Without a doubt these coming months will test your academic prowess, but they will also shed light on whom you are as individuals. Of course I say this with the benefit of hindsight, but I feel that everything I put into the CORE taught me about who I am, how I work, and what I’m good at, and I give these discoveries just as much weight as what I learned academically. The BCOM program is incredibly dynamic in that you have the opportunity to learn a broad set of skills, meet a huge network of people and get involved in aspects of the business world that would otherwise be unavailable to you.

I would like to emphasize to you all how important “getting involved” was for me. Getting involved means whatever you make of it. If you are

thinking about going to an event or joining a club, you should. If you are mentally debating the benefits of tutoring a fellow student or of organizing a dinner for your group, you should. Getting involved is completely subjective, and to me it means getting out of your comfort zone, because that is where you experience new things, and in my opinion, truly develop as a person.

A fellow BCom’er once said: “Don’t ever miss an event because of homework, and don’t ever miss an event because you’re tired.” His message hit home with me because if you manage your time, there will always be time for homework, and to catch up on sleep, but these events and the people at them may only come around once in your university career.

The talented, intelligent people that make up your cohort and that surround you at this moment are your peers. These people will form your personal and professional network that will last decades past your four-year degree. These people are going to be Canada’s business leaders in the years to come, so please, get out of your comfort zone and connect with them. Say hello, build a friendship, and make the most out of your time at Gustavson.

Warmest regards,

Ryan PricePresident, Commerce Students’ Society

1. What you learn in 3rd year that will stick with you the longest isn't the course material; it's your character.2. You're in business school now; always go to events and look presentable-peopleAREsuperficial.3. Networking isn't about handing business cards out and never following up.Networkingismeetingnewpeopleandfindingouthowyoucan help them - not the other way around.4. When the CSS does events, this is where you make friends that will last the longest - don't miss any of them because of homework or because you were tired. 5. There will be at least one point where you question why you even went in to the program because shit hit the fan; this is life testing you - show up to the challenge and don't give in to discouragement.6. Attitude matters when it comes to team work.7. Make it a priority to go out and do team bonding that has nothing to do with school. 8. Get involved! It allows you to develop amazing friends, gain transferable skills, and have an awesome experience. 9. During clicker quizzes, peeking at the row in front of you isn't cheating; it's survival. 10. Don'tpanic, thisisablipintheradarofyourlife.Infiveyearsyouwon't be thinking about how you did on an assignment or the grade you got. You'll be thinking about the people you met and the friends you made.

Thanks to all the fourth years for their help DB, LG, MF, MS, and MA. Your contributions were greatly appreciated.

Crawled So Hard

You may all be in Cohort 5, but you’re all 10s in our eyes!

Why crawl when you can be carried? Sweaters around the neck are back in!

Connor Brookes approves of this crawl.

The hardworking team that made the crawl possible! How’d you get on the crawl without your t-shirt??

The Gazette is going to be a monthly publication primarily for Third Year Gustavson Students to know what is going on as well as what has happened. We are also hoping to be able to include as many students as possible in this publication either in the form of editorials, interviews, or in other ways.

We will be publishing photos from the all the different events that go on throughout the year as well as putting out great content including tips and tricks for surviving hell week and exams, profiles on Current and former Gusty’s, and a myriad of other topics.

If you think of something that you would like to see in the Gazette that isn’t already there or would like to submit something, please contact us at [email protected].
