We successfully completed the third annual Ohio State Wild Bunch match at Muddy Gulch,

which was hosted by the Greene County Cowboys at the Greene County Fish and Game

Association in Xenia Ohio. It’s the final one of the three major matches held in Ohio this year. As

a reminder, Smoke in the Woods, the Midwest Territorial Black Powder Championship was held

in April, and the Ohio State SASS Championship was held on Memorial Day weekend in May.

Nine Ohio Rifle Pistol Association members took part in this weekend’s fun.

There were five categories of competition at Muddy Gulch. They included Modern, Traditional,

Junior, Senior and Ladies. Competitors came from all over the area. There were many

experienced Model 1911 .45 ACP shooters who had been shooting “Ole Slab Sides” for a quite

a while as well as some relatively new to Wild Bunch too and were shooting this type of

competition for their very first time! The day started off in an untypical Autumn Ohio fashion,

slightly cool without a cloud in the sky.

Match Director Ruger Ray welcomed the participants and co-host Loco Leadslinger, went over

the safety rules and made several announcements. After the Pledge of Allegiance, we went

right to work.

The Wild Bunch was a 1969 western movie directed by Sam Peckinpah about an outlaw gang

and their exploits on the Texas Mexican Border around 1913. In Wild Bunch Action Shooting, a

lot of the action resembles the closing scene of the Wild Bunch movie. According to the SASS

handbook, SASS Wild Bunch™ Action Shooting is supposed to replicate by historical

reenactment the old western movie.

Costuming is a big factor in SASS and so it is here, with the emphasis put on period US military

from 1900 to 1916, western cowpoke and Edwardian period fashion. Dress like that worn by the

movie characters Pike, Dutch, Lyle, or Tector are also acceptable. Blastin Brad was the epitome

of the period military officer.

Participants compete with firearms typical of those used by military, civilians and outlaws just

after the turn of the 20th century. As I mentioned, weaponry includes the Colt (or replica) 1911

semi-auto pistols single stack steel frame in .45 ACP. The 1911 pistol is divided into two

categories, the Traditional which replicates the “issued” military style handgun and the Modern

which can have adjustable sights, beavertail grip safeties, etc.

Also needed is a lever action rifle, and they can be original, or replicas of lever or slide action

rifles manufactured during the period from approximately 1860 until 1899. They incorporate a

tubular magazine and an exposed hammer and must be chambered in a pistol caliber of .40

caliber or larger. 44-40 and 45 Colt seem to predominate.

A Winchester Model 97 or Model 12 pump shotgun (to include replicas) rounds out the

weaponry. The Winchester pumps must be in 12 gauge and can be in either Civilian or Military

configuration.

Ruger Ray with the help of Black Jack Beeson had the eight stages configured in a unique

fashion and they did a super job in scenario design by using more difficult targets such as falling

plates and some rifle and pistol targets placed at greater distances than typically found in your

traditional Cowboy Action events. These Wild Bunch Action Shooting scenarios were a hoot!

Because of the higher power factor needed to qualify for Wild Bunch, the full power rifle and

pistol ammunition made shooters appreciate competing at a higher skill level.

The shooter came to the ready line having loaded six rounds in the shotgun, up to ten rounds in

the rifle and a seven round .45ACP magazine in the pistol. The scenarios required at least

twenty one .45s to be fired and one stage required 35!

Great example was stage two: The shooter started in the doorway in a “Texas surrender”

position. After saying the line “1776 was a very good year”, at the beep, the shooter had to

shoot two separate seven round sweeps with the pistol on the pistol targets in a 1, 7, 7, 6

pattern. Then they moved the center window and repeated the sequence on the distant rifle

targets with both the pistol and the rifle until empty. Then acquiring the shotgun in the left

window, they had to shoot six knock down targets. It took about as much time to shoot it as it

took you to read this. But, Big Ozz managed to get off all 35 pistol, 6 shotgun and 7 rifle rounds

in 53.83 seconds, while firing from multiple positions. Wowzer!

Old western movie buffs and serious shooters alike agree the use of vintage style as well as

turn of the 20th century firearms, unique costuming, challenging targets, and fast action make

Wild Bunch shooting one of the most interesting of all cowboy action shooting sports for

spectators and contestants alike.

To see what competitions are coming up in Ohio, please check out the SASS website

The Annual Ohio State championship, “Shootout at Hard Times” in Piqua Ohio is at their web

site: http://miamivalleycowboys.org/state_match.htm.

And the “Smoke in the Woods” match held in Middletown Ohio next March. Their details are at

http://www.bigirons.com/goa/goa.htm.

I highly encourage shooters to get your applications in early. And, if you have never seen a

cowboy or Wild Bunch match, any of these would be a good opportunity to drop in and say

howdy.
