Gulliver alighted from his seat which he had occupied while being pulled up. A crowd of people surrounded him. They looked at him in deep wonder. They looked very strange in their shape & face. Their hands were all reclined either to the right or the left. One of their eyes turned inward while the other turned directly up to the sky.

Those strange creatures were followed by their servants known as “flappers”. The function of these servants was to draw the attention of their masters to anything that might need their attention. Their masters were always lost in intense speculations & thoughts. Their ‘servants & flappers’ had to strike their master with bladders on the mouth or ears to draw their attention.

When Gulliver was taken to the king, he found the monarch busy in solving a problem. Gulliver had to wait for at least an hour before the king could pay any attention to him. The king asked Gulliver many questions. Gulliver tried to communicate with the king, but he found that neither of them could understand the other because their languages were different.

At dinner – time different dishes were brought for Gulliver. He noted another strange thing. The mutton had been cut into the shape of an equilateral triangle. The beef had been cot into the shape of a rhombus. The pudding had been shaped into a circle. The other articles were given the shapes of musical instruments like a harp, fiddle & a flute. The bread had been cut into geometrical figures such as cones, cylinders, & parallelograms.

During the next few days, Gulliver was able to learn a

little of the language of these strange people. He

also learnt that the name of this island was ‘Laputa’

which in English meant the “flying island”.

The king’s officials ordered a tailor to prepare clothes for Gulliver. The tailor behaved in a strange manner. The tailor used all different kinds of instruments to take Gulliver's measurements. After 6 days, the tailor brought the clothes but they were all very badly stitched & were quite out of shape.

Music & Mathematics were the two principal interests of these people. They were hardly concerned with anything else. They expressed their ideas through lines & figures.

The people of Laputa were constantly in a state of ‘disquietude’ they never enjoyed peace of mind even for a moment. Their main fears came from heavenly bodies.

They also feared that the earth would be swallowed by the sun or the face of the sun would grow dark. Such fears made them restless. They couldn’t sleep & had no peace of mind. However, the women of these island were different from their men. Their minds were not obsessed by fears. They turned to strangers for entertainment. Such strangers could be found in large numbers at the royal court. The women made love to the strangers.
