Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo

What a great time I had at the Emerald Coast Cruizin’. I spent the whole week there and each day was filled with fun things to do and see around Panama City Beach. “Rakes & Lisa Parrish sure know how to through a party.

Of course when you stay at the Sandpiper Beacon Beach Resort, you know your in the company of die hard car guys and gals. It’s not surprising to see their parking lot full of the kool cars. Most of them arrive early just because they know their “car crowd” family will be there too! To quote the feeling… “dammit it boy.. we’re havin’ a large time”

Rakes and Lisa along with their crew of volunteers, kept things rolling along. Emerald Coast Cruizn’s crew may be small but you would never know it from all the things that they had lined up for us to do.

The location changed this year and it was on the beach front road at the old amusement park parking lot and the hotel next to that. Even the street was blocked off.

Most of the traffic is classic & hot rod cars instead of local pick-up trucks doing burnouts like Cruisin the Coast.

No big traffic jams, no cops giving out tickets or locals complaining about all them out of towners tying up the roads. And the business folks sure were glad to see us.

Sure improvements need to be made but I’m sure they are working on that. Nobody puts that much work into an event like they put on and not have some problems to work out.

Gulf Coast MotorSports sponsored Hot Rod Alley again this year. Our Coast Cruizer hospitality tent was set up and we signed up new members from GA, LA, IL, AL, FL.

If you want some information about the Coast Cruizers send me an email [email protected]

You can bet the Coast Cruizers will be back and will bring as many cars & people as we can.

The event schedule for the next year is filling up fast. Some say; “to many shows or cruise-ins” and “they should put their show on a different date other than ours”.

Guess that would be OK if everyone would have events all twelve months. But July & August are too hot, and December, January, February too cold. Then there are the businesses’ (some of them helping to support this newsletter), they want to be involved too. Some only have certain dates available.

All Gulf Coast MotorSports can do is pass on the information. The show promoters must make the experience good enough to get the people back. It’s not so much about what is being given away at the shows, as much as ….how much did the person enjoy themselves.

Here we are once again at the last month of the year, (Continued on page 6)

Ya’ know….Dem Cajun Wives don't forget old boyfriends…….. My ol’ friend, Boudreaux takes his wife, Cloteele, to a dance down on the bayou, las' weekend. There was this guy on the dance floor dancin' like crazy

- breakdancin', moonwalkin', back flips--the whole works. Cloteele turn to Boudreaux and say, "See dat guy? Twenty-five year ago, he propose to me and I turn him down."

Boudreaux paused and say, "Look like he still celebratin'!"

As most of you know the magazine is what keeps me busy and I have met or talked to most of you over the years. I spent most of my working career working in control rooms, monitoring computer screens, daydreaming about what I was going to do when I retired.

This is where it starts. An idea, a plan, something in print or on the internet, helping you plan your event or just getting the word out. If I can help you, just give me a call or send me an e-mail.

Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine’s goal is to bring people together for good times.

So here’s to all of you on Santa’s team. May your thoughts during the Christmas holidays be filled with the spirit of the Shepherds from the manger while enjoying the happy moments you bring to those with whom you share.

Till next month…

December. This is the month that is full of emotions, most of them thinking about Christmas and what we can give, or afford to give, for some what they will get.

To me it’s a mixed bag. I love all the Christmas sprit, from decorating the house to the shopping not to mention the family and friends gathering together.

As we also know there is the side that Ebenezer Scrooge discovered; the reality that for some, Christmas may be one of the hardest times of the year. It’s hard to keep your sprits up when you feel you can’t participate in the way you would like to.

There is a way for all of us to remember what the true sprit of Christmas feels like. All we have to do is think back to a time when we were told our first Christmas stories. And in this months magazine are a few of mine.

I sure do want to thank all the contributors to the magazine. Couldn't do it without ya’. And to all our Coast Cruizers members, subscribers, readers and advertisers, I want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and all the best for the new year.

Jimbo, Here is a picture of my car and my beautiful granddaughter. The car is a 1964 El

Camino with a 350 Pontiac motor, a 6-71 supercharger, 2- 600 Holley's with an estimated 550 HP. It’s not a race car, I just like the Pro Street look. I take it to car shows and crusin's all the time and enjoy driving it around town.

Thanks, Matt

Dear Motorsports… Many years ago, I took my Biloxi-born husband home with me to Michigan. When I suggested

we stop off in Canada for lunch, he threw an un-Godly fit because I was dragging him to a "foreign country." I laughed hysterically at the time. Canadians are just less uptight versions of Americans. Then over time I realized that most people from the Gulf Coast view Canada the same way---as foreign. In the spirit of friendliness and the holidays, I hope you will print this in the December issue. It shows all the readers that Canadians are JUST LIKE US.

Jimbo, This will be the 25th anniversary of the Racing Vehicle Extravaganza,

Mississippi's Premier Indoor Auto Show, featuring over 160 vehicles in competition for "Best of Show". There have been 24 winners and never a repeat.

This show is the foundation for performance car events in Central Mississippi, and has helped Promoters start several area tracks around Mississippi over the years, including Byram MS, the reopening, of Hattiesburg, Lena, MS, Chunky MS, and others. All of these tracks announced their building and opening at this annual event.

We have sons of fathers that had cars in the first show, showing cars now themselves. We would be proud to welcome some of the past participants from the early years to attend this year and we welcome new attendees to help us continue to grow. There has never been an entry fee for the cars at this event, and never will, but we do now ask that participants buy armbands to help us with increased cost at the Mississippi Trade Mart, the new home of the show.

As producer of this Mississippi event, I sincerely appreciate all the support the performance car owners have given us and ask the you please consider being a part of this year's show.

We honor the past by some exciting new changes like the $1,000.00 draw down. $100.00 will be given to a show entrant only on the hour (11am-4pm) each day along with some new door prizes, and special awards. Enter your vehicle to qualify for the money and awards.

Please contact us with questions or concerns and vendors are welcome at the lowest booth cost of any show in the area. For more information call Bill Bissell at 601-832-3020, or e-mail Bill at [email protected]. www.mrve.webs.com

The Inn Keeper By: Dr. Ralph F. Wilson

They think I'm some kind of cruel, heartless landlord. Someone must have told them that. But they're wrong, just plain wrong, and it's time to set the record straight, once and for all.

People say I'm an innkeeper. I suppose you'd call it an inn. To us it's just a big house. My grandfather, Joshua ben-Yahoudi, built it back when his trading business was at a peak. And he built it big enough to fit all fourteen kids.

Well, a few years ago, the missus and I were just rattling around in that big house--kids grown up and all--and we were thinking, maybe we could take in a few travelers. Rachel has always been mighty good in the kitchen, so we just let out word that we'd take people in, and they started to come. Every night we'd have a person or two, sometimes more. People would always come back when they came to town again, intent on another bowl of Rachel's lamb stew.

Then came that blankety-blank census the governor thought up. Taxation, pure and simple! People from all over the province flooded into town that week. Filled us clean up. Rachel and I slept in the main room where we always do, and we started putting guests in the other three rooms. They kept coming. Then we doubled up two or three families to a room. They kept coming. Finally, when we had filled the main room with four families plus Rachel and me, we started turning people away.

I must have gotten in and out of bed ten times that night, stumbling over bodies to get to the door. "No more room, sorry folks. No more room. Come back in the morning. We have a couple of families leaving then." They'd mutter something and head back to their party, and sleep somewhere next to a house under the shelter of a blanket. I just couldn't make any more room. That's the honest truth.

But I did make room for one more couple. Joseph was a burly man with big arms and strong hands, down from Nazareth, I think he said. He wouldn't take "no" for an answer. I would say, "No, I'm sorry," and he'd tell me about his "little Mary." Well, when I saw "little Mary" she wasn't very little. She was just about as pregnant as a woman can get, and awfully pale. While Joseph was pleading, I saw her grab her tummy in pain, and I knew I couldn't let her have that baby outside in the wind and sleet.

The barn. That would just have to do, I told myself, and led them and their donkey out back. Now it was pretty crowded, so I shooed several animals into the pen outside to make room in one dry corner. Joseph said, "We sure are grateful, sir." Then with a serious look, he asked me, "Do you know where I can find a midwife in these parts? We might need her tomorrow or the next day."

That man didn't know much about having babies, it was plain enough to see. I ran to Aunt Sarah's house and pounded on the door until her husband

came. "One of the travelers is having a baby," I told him. "I'll wait while Aunt Sarah gets dressed." I stopped a moment to catch my breath. "And tell her to hurry." By the time we got back to the barn, Joseph had "little Mary" settled on some soft, clean hay, wrapped up in a blanket, wiping the perspiration off her brow, and was speaking softly to her as she fought the waves of pain. Aunt Sarah sent me to get my Rachel, and then pushed Joseph and me out of the barn. "This ain't no place for men," she said. We waited just outside in the shelter of the barn

for hours, it seemed like. Well, all of a sudden, we hear a little cry. "You've got a baby boy," Aunt Sarah was saying as we peeped around the corner. She hands the young-un to Rachel, and she wraps it up in those swaddling bands she had saved. Cute little thing, I tell you.

Well, Joseph goes over to Mary and gives her a big hug, and a kiss on the cheek, and Rachel hands Mary the baby, and then comes over to me and takes my hand. "Remember when our Joshua was born?" she whispers.

The lantern was blowing almost out, the cattle were lowing softly, and baby Jesus was asleep in his mother's arms. That's how I left them as I walked Aunt Sarah home. Chilly wind, though the sleet had stopped.

By the time I got back, Rachel was in bed, and I was about ready to put out the light, step over sleeping bodies, and get under the warm covers, when I heard some murmuring out by the barn.

I'd better check, I told myself. When I peeped in, I saw shepherds. Raggedy, smelly old shepherds were kneeling down on the filthy barn floor as if they were praying. The oldest one was saying something to Joseph about angels and the Messiah. And the rest of them just knelt there with their heads bowed, some with tears running down their faces.

I coughed out loud, and Joseph looked up. I was almost ready to run those thieving shepherds off, when Joseph motioned to me with his hand. "It's okay," he whispered. "They've come to see the Christ-baby."

The Christ-baby? The Messiah? That was when I knelt, too. And watched, and prayed, and listened to the old shepherd recount his story of angels and heavenly glory, and the sign of a holy baby, wrapped in swaddling bands, to be found in a stable-manger.

My Lord, it was my stable where the Christ-baby was born. My manger he rested in. My straw, my lamp, my wife Rachel assisting at his birth.

The shepherds left after a while. Some of them leaned over and kissed the sleeping Christ-child before they departed. I know I did.

I'll always be glad I made room in the barn for that family-- that holy family. You see, I'm not some mean inn-keeper. I was there. I saw him. And, you know, years later that boy came back to Bethlehem, this time telling about the Kingdom of God. Oh, I believe in him, I tell you. I was there. And, mark my words, if you'd seen what I've seen, you'd be a believer, too.

Here is another story that makes you want to make Christmas special for someone..

I remember my first Christ-

mas party with Grandma. I was just a kid. I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her on the day my big sister dropped the bomb: "There is no Santa Claus," she jeered. "Even dummies know that!"

My grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day because I knew she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told the truth, and I knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her world-famous cinnamon buns. Grandma was home, and the buns were still warm. Between bites I told her everything. She was ready for me.

“No Santa Claus!" she snorted. "Ridiculous! Don't believe it. That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad. Now, put on your coat, and let's go."

"Go? Go where, Grandma?" I asked. I hadn't even finished my second cinnamon bun.

"Where" turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. That was a bundle in those days.

'Take this money," she said, "and buy something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car." Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's.

I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people scrambling to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, clutching that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy, and who on earth to buy it for. I thought of everybody I knew: my family, my friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, the people who went to my church. I was just about thought out, when I suddenly thought of Bobbie Decker.

He was a kid with bad breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock's grade-two class.

Bobbie Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but all we kids knew that Bobbie Decker didn't have a cough, and he didn't have a coat. I fingered the ten-dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobbie Decker a coat. I settled on a red corduroy one that had a hood to it. It looked real warm, and he would like that.

"Is this a Christmas present for someone?" the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down.

"Yes, "I replied shyly. "It's ... for Bobbie." The nice lady smiled at me. I didn't get any change, but she put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.

That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper and ribbons, and write, "To Bobbie, From Santa Claus" on it -- Grandma said that Santa always insisted on secrecy. Then she drove me over to Bobbie Decker's house, explaining as we went that I was now and forever officially one of Santa's helpers. Grandma parked down the street from Bobbie's house, and she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walk.

Then Grandma gave me a nudge. "All right, Santa Claus", she whispered, "get going." I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his doorbell and flew back to the safety of the bushes and Grandma.

Together we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to open. Finally it did, and there stood Bobbie.

Forty years haven't dimmed the thrill of those moments spent shivering, beside my grandma, in Bobbie Decker's bushes. That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were: ridiculous. Santa was alive and well, and we were on his team.

By Tom Ziglar

In January of this year I participated in the most inspiring event of my life. I joined a team of 16 men and women in a RAGNAR relay race and we ran from Miami to Key West - that is 200 miles, folks! Of course, officially it was 199 miles point something, but I know we covered more than 200 miles because several times we had teammates walking and running side by side, encouraging each other.

Why do I say this was the most inspiring event of my life? There are several reasons, and some powerful lessons we can all learn from.

Let's be honest. Two hundred miles is a loooong way! Any time you complete an enormous task there is a ton of satisfaction that goes with it. Being a relay race, each of us took turns running/walking different segments. Each of us was pushed to our max and did segments based on our physical ability and running experience. We had several seasoned marathoners on our team and several novice runners like me. The entire race took almost 40 hours for our team to complete. Forty hours in a support van or pounding the pavement without much more than a few minutes' sleep is a test of endurance and mental will.

Three of our team members did their segments on ONE LEG! Yes, you read that right. We had three Wounded Warriors on our team. As I was struggling on my runs and my calf was cramping up, I would look over and see SSG Christopher Gordon, SGT Noe “Lito” Santos, and SSG William Castillo encouraging me as they stood watching, standing on their prosthetics and crutches. Kind of hard to complain about a leg cramp when your teammates don't have a leg! It is hard for me to explain the emotional impact I felt, knowing that those encouraging me had experienced pain on a level I will never understand. It was as if in one slight smile or glance they communicated, “I know. Do it anyway.”

For 200 miles we became more than a team. We were family, brothers and sisters in suffering. Not one complaint or cross word was uttered, even though we were all completely physically and mentally worn out by the end. We had husbands and wives on the team, a father and daughter. Funny accents, different backgrounds, our own issues. We had each other. I watched the highest ranking officer become the servant of all. I watched a wife encourage her Wounded Warrior with care, love, and concern. I watched our leader totally revise our plan and our strategy halfway through so that we would be sure to finish within the time limit. I saw 100% commitment and buy-in to every decision our leader made. For 200 miles and 40 hours I saw everyone committed to finishing on

time, together. Failure was not an option. Whatever it took. I saw people dig deep and support each other to a degree and level I had never seen before.

I learned I could do more than I thought I could. I had about one mile left in my last segment that I had to run. I was tired, hurt, and at my limit. My last segment was just under five miles and at four miles into it I had decided I would walk for a few minutes and then jog the rest of the way in so that the team would see me finish strong. Funny how you negotiate in your own mind and justify taking a break. Just as I was about to start walking I looked up and saw Command Sergeant Major Jose Garcia-Aponte, our leader, jogging towards me. He started running beside me. “How is it going, boss?” he asked. Jose was running the next leg and he came to meet me and encourage me as I finished. Of course, walking for a few minutes no longer became an option! Still to this day I can't believe I finished without stopping. Jose knew I could do more than I thought I could. Sometimes you need someone else to show you what you can do. Most of all I learned that when you are doing something for a cause bigger than yourself, you can accomplish things you never dreamed possible. Our team was running for Operation Giveback (OGB). OGB is a nonprofit that raises money for the sons and daughters of men and women who gave their lives in the service of our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. As I watched our three Wounded Warriors struggle, each on one leg, burning more energy and suffering more pain than I could imagine as they did their segments, it completely humbled me, knowing that they were doing it for someone else. They, who had already given more than anyone should ever ask, were giving even more. Perspective, when it is up close and personal, is a life-changing thing.

Jose, who is the founder of OGB, gave each of us a sheet of paper in a plastic baggy at the start of the race. On the sheet of paper were the pictures of 12 men who had given their lives in the service of our country. They were the reason we were running. OGB had provided Christmas presents to the children of these 12 just the month before. Jose told us that when we got tired, hurt, and had blisters on our blisters, we just needed to pull this sheet out and remember why we were running.

So I have a couple of questions for you. Who are you running for? Who are you running with? If you have the right purpose for running and you are running with the right people, you can go the extra mile.

Thought this one was worth passing along ...

As a joke, my brother used to hang a pair of panty hose over his fireplace before Christmas. He said all he wanted was for Santa to fill them. What they say about Santa checking the list twice must be true because every Christmas morning, although Jay's kids' stockings were overflowed, his poor pantyhose hung sadly empty.

One year I decided to make his dream come true. I put on sunglasses and went in search of an inflatable love doll. They don't sell those things at Walmart. I had to go to an adult book-store downtown. If You've never been in a X-rated store, don't go. You'll only confuse your-self. I was there an hour saying things like, "What does this do?" "You're kidding me!" "Who would buy that?" Finally, I made it to the inflatable doll section. I wanted to buy a standard, uncomplicated doll that could also substitute as a passenger in my truck so I could use the car pool lane during rush hour. Finding what I wanted was difficult. Love dolls come in many different models. The top of the line, according to the side of the box, could do things I'd only seen in a book on animal hus-bandry. I settled for "Lovable Louise." She was at the bottom of the price scale. To call Louise a "doll" took a huge leap of imagina-tion.

On Christmas Eve, with the help of an old bicycle pump, Louise came to life. My sister-in-law was in on the plan and let me in during the wee morning hours, long after Santa had come and gone, I filled the dangling pantyhose with Louise's pliant legs and bottom. I also ate some cookies and drank what remained of a glass of milk on a nearby tray. I went home, and gig-gled for a couple of hours.

The next morning my brother called to say that Santa had been to his house and left a pre-sent that had made him VERY happy but had left the dog confused. She would bark, start to walk away, then come back and bark some more. We all agreed that Louise should remain in her panty hose so the rest of the family could admire her when they came over for the tradi-tional Christmas dinner.

My grandmother noticed Louise the moment she walked in the door. "What the hell is that?"

she asked. My brother quickly explained, "It's a doll."

"Who would play with something like that?" Granny snapped.

I had several candidates in mind, but kept my mouth shut.

"Where are her clothes?" Granny continued. "Boy, that turkey sure smells nice, Gran,"

Jay said, trying to steer her into the dining room. But Granny was relentless.

"Why doesn't she have any teeth?" Again, I could have answered, but why would I? It was Christmas and no one wanted to ride in the back of the ambulance saying, "Hang on Granny, Hang on!"

My grandfather, a delightful old man with poor eyesight, sidled up to me and said, " Hey, who's the naked gal by the fireplace?"

I told him she was Jay's friend. A few min-utes later I noticed Grandpa by the mantel, talking to Louise. Not just talking, but actually flirting. It was then that we realized this might be Grandpa's last Christmas at home.

The dinner went well. We made the usual small talk about who had died, who was dying, and who should be killed, when suddenly Louise made a noise that sounded a lot like my father in the bathroom in the morning. Then she lurched from the panty hose, flew around the room twice, and fell in a heap in front of the sofa.

The cat screamed. I passed cranberry sauce through my nose, and grandpa ran across the room, fell to his knees, and began administer-ing mouth to mouth resuscitation. My brother fell back over his chair and wet his pants and Granny threw down her napkin, stomped out of the room, and sat in the car.

It was indeed a Christmas to treasure and remember. Later in my brother's garage, we conducted a thorough examination to decide the cause of Louise's collapse. We discovered that Louise had suffered from a hot ember to the back of her right thigh. Fortunately, thanks to a wonder drug called duct tape, we restored her to perfect health. Louise went on to star in several bachelor party movies. I think Grandpa still calls her whenever he can get out of the house.

Christmas with Louise

I was raised in a small ranching town in Texas and our local banker knew just about everyone. So when he saw his old friend Tom, an eighty-year old rancher, in town he made it a point to talk to him.

Tom had lost his wife a year or so before and rumor had it that he was marrying a 'mail order' bride. Being a good friend, the banker asked Tom if the rumor was true.

Well old Tom assured him that it was. The banker then asked Tom the age of his new bride to be. Tom proudly said, “She'll be twenty-one in November.”

Now the banker, being the wise man that he was, could see that the sexual appetite of a young woman could not be satisfied by an eighty-year- old man. Wanting his old friend's remaining years to be happy the banker tactfully suggested that Tom should consider getting a hired hand to help him out on the ranch, knowing nature would take its own course. Tom thought this was a good idea and said he would look for one that afternoon.

About four months later, the banker ran into Tom in town again. “How's the new wife?”, asked the banker. Tom proudly said, “Good - she's pregnant.”

The banker, happy that his sage advice had worked out, continued, “And how's the hired hand?” Without hesitating, Tom said, “She's pregnant too.” Don't ever underestimate old guys.

Students in an advanced Biology class were taking a mid-term exam. Last question was: Name 7 advantages of Mother's Milk'. Answer was worth 70 points.

All seven parts had to be answered correctly or 70 points would be lost. One student, in particular, was hard put to think of seven advantages. He wrote: 1) It is perfect formula for the child. 2) It provides immunity against several diseases. 3) It is always the right temperature. 4) It is inexpensive. 5) It bonds the child to mother, and vice versa. 6) It is always available as needed.

Then, the student was stuck - what was the 7th advantage. Finally, in desperation, just before the bell rang ending the test, he wrote: 7) It comes in two attractive containers and the cat can't get to it.

He got an A.

Hi Friends, You gotta love Maxine! As we progress into 2013, I want to thank you for your educational e-

mails over the past year. I am totally screwed up now and have little chance of recovery. I can no longer open a bathroom door without using a paper towel, nor let the waitress put lemon slices in my ice water without worrying about the bacteria on the lemon peel.

I can't sit down on a hotel bedspread because I can only imagine what has happened on it since it was last washed. I have trouble shaking hands with someone who has been driving because the number one pastime while driving alone is picking one's nose.

Eating a little snack sends me on a guilt trip because I can only imagine how many gallons of trans fats I have consumed over the years. I can't touch any woman's handbag for fear she has placed it on the floor of a public toilet.

I must send my special thanks for the email about rat poo in the glue on envelopes because I now have to use a wet sponge with every enve-lope that needs sealing. ALSO, now I have to scrub the top of every can I open for the same reason.

I can't have a drink in a bar because I fear I'll wake up in a bathtub full of ice with my kidneys gone. I can't eat at KFC because their chick-ens are actually horrible mutant freaks with no eyes, feet or feathers.

I can't use cancer-causing deodorants even though I smell like a water buffalo on a hot day.

Thanks to you I have learned that my prayers only get answered if I forward an e-mail to seven of my friends and make a wish within five minutes.

Because of your concern, I no longer drink Coca Cola because it can remove toilet stains. I no longer buy fuel without taking someone along to watch the car, so a serial killer doesn't crawl in my back seat when I'm filling up.. I no longer use Cling Wrap in the microwave because it causes seven different types of cancer. And thanks for letting me know I can't boil a cup of water in the microwave anymore because it will blow up in my face, disfiguring me for life.

I no longer go to the cinema because I could be pricked with a needle infected with AIDS when I sit down. I no longer go to shopping centers because someone will drug me with a perfume sample and rob me.. And I no longer answer the phone because someone will ask me to dial a number for which I will get a huge phone bill with calls to Jamaica, Uganda, Singapore and Uzbekistan ...

Thanks to you I can't use anyone's toilet but mine because a big black snake could be lurking under the seat and cause me instant death when it bites my butt. And thanks to your great advice I can't ever pick up a dime coin dropped in the car park because it was probably placed there by a sex molester waiting to grab me as I bend over.

I can't do any gardening because I'm afraid I'll get bitten by the Vio-lin Spider and my hand will fall off.

P. S.. I now keep my toothbrush in the living room, because I was told by e-mail that water splashes over 6 ft. out of the toilet..

Ed and Carolyn met while on a singles cruise and Ed fell head over heels for her. When they discovered they lived in the same city only a few miles apart Ed was ecstatic. He immediately started asking her out when they got home.

Within a couple of weeks, Ed had taken Carolyn to dance clubs, restaurants, concerts, movies, and museums. Ed became convinced that Carolyn was indeed his soul mate and true love. Every date seemed better than the last.

On the one-month anniversary of their first dinner on the cruise ship, Ed took Carolyn to a fine restaurant. While having cocktails and waiting for their salad, Ed said, "I guess you can tell I'm very much in love with you. I'd like a little serious talk before our relationship continues to the next stage. So, before I get a box out of my jacket and ask you a life changing question, it's only fair to warn you, I'm a total golf nut. I play golf, I read about golf, I watch golf on TV. In short, I eat, sleep, and breathe golf. If that's going to be a problem for us, you'd better say so now!"

Carolyn took a deep breath and responded, "Ed, that certainly won't be a problem. I love you as you are and I love golf too; but, since we're being totally honest with each other, you need to know that for the last five years I've been a hooker."

Ed said, "I bet it's because you're not keeping your wrists straight when you hit the ball."

When you’re a car guy that’s what you dream about, and talk about, spend your extra cash on, and if you have the knack you draw them. Check out the work of

Mississippi Gulf Coast’s own Vince Hoda. Vince has been drawing cars, truck, bikes, race cars, drag cars, fact is if it has wheels or looks fast he is going to put it on paper.

“I’ve been drawing cars for as long as I can remember and I enjoy doing portraits of peoples Hot Rods and Cars or Trucks. It started awhile back when a friend asked me to draw her husband’s car. She wanted to surprise him with a present for Christmas, and I guess that was the my first paid drawing.”

Vince can even take your ideas and incorporate them to create a wild rendering of your future project. Each of his works is completely hand drawn and colored with no aid of any kind from computer software or digital enhancements.

We were the most fortunate generation in history to witness all we did in the 50's 60's & 70's, we really were, especially the great cars and the great music. The music we grew up with, in my opinion, was the greatest music of all time.

Jimbo Perkins and I were sitting around one day talking about car show music, my background in Radio, TV and stock car racing and the need for a music show for the Coast Cruizers. That turned out to be a very good meeting, we didn't know it at the time, it was just talking and brain storming, but those ideas we kicked around that day have taken off.

The first idea was music for our 1st Saturday night of the month Cruize-In at Edgewater Mall and it went well. Our next thought was how can we do it better? So we kicked around some more ideas and put them into action for the Mega Cruize-In during that last Saturday night of Cruizin the Coast. We called it ‘Terry Mason's Hot Rod Show’ and it went extremely well. We thought once again how can we improve it even more. So we talked and kicked around more ideas.

Rakes Parrish of Emerald Coast Cruizin called me up and said hey, we want the Hot Rod Show at our big show in Panama City Beach, FL. I said sure…now that was a trip. Thousands and thousands of people were exposed to the ‘Hot Rod Show’.

If you're asking yourself about now, what is the Hot Rod Show, well it's kind of like a radio show geared for the car show scene. The music is louder, more upfront, the selection of music is incredible. We're using only the greatest songs from the 50's 60's and 70's… I know that music very well, giveaways, door prizes, interaction and intensity. Terry Mason's Hot Rod Show is an intense celebration of the music you grew up with and what the classic car show scene is all about. We'll consistently improve on it and make it better. We better, we've already got a lot more car shows to do! We are going to try to stay in the Southeastern United States with the show. You know, God's Country… mainly because of logistics.

Emerald Coast Cruizin seems to get better and better each year. Rakes Parrish has to be the nicest promoter I have ever worked with. I've dealt with my share of concert, festival, bike show and car show promoters over the years, they are a rare breed, but you won't find a nicer person and a better promoter in a package like Emerald Coast Cruizin has. I watched this guy deal with big shots and the most average of folks and he was always nice and always professional. Sometimes when someone just wanted to know why somebody saved a parking spot at the show and they were told they couldn't, he would go out of his way and spend time with the person, when most promoters would have just blown them off. I saw some folks try to take advantage of his kindness, but you never heard him complain, even when he knew they were just complaining to see what they could get. This year's Emerald Coast Cruizin car show was great. The cars were above average; the turn out each day grew and grew. The Giant 50/50 Jackpot was over $1,300 for Friday's giveaway. Saturday, one happy man won $2,315 in the Giant 50/50 Jackpot. That's the largest jackpot I've

seen in one day at a car show. That man was beside himself. Next came the $10,000 cash giveaway. Registration numbers were called out, you would come up and choose a rolled up giant check out of a big Tupperware container. You had to unroll the check in front of everyone and see what you won. $100 checks, $250 checks, $500 checks, $1,000 checks and one $2,000 check. It was funny to watch the promoter start sweating when the $2,000 check had not been pulled with four checks left. I overheard “Rakes” tell, an Emerald Coast Cruizin’ volunteer and assistant, Terry Poore that he hoped his accounting people had not screwed up. It came down to two checks left… and the winner pulled a smaller amount. Now Rakes was sweating. The last car registration number pulled should be the $2,000 check. The man was on his way to the front, Rakes was sweating and thousands were watching. The man pulls the check out and unrolls it… it seemed to take forever… and sure enough it was $2,000. I think the happiest person was Rakes Parrish the promoter. Out of all those checks, the last one was the big one… amazing and definitely built up the drama!

Frank Brown Park is where the show has been for the last seven years but this year Emerald Coast Cruizn had to move because of scheduling conflicts. The new event site was down on the beach, not just any beach, the World's Most Beautiful Beach (Panama City Beach's logo I know for over 50 years. If you've spent time there, you know it's as true of a statement as you can get. From my room on the 6th floor overlooking the beach, I had forgotten how beautiful and breath taking it truly was!)

The new site on the beach is not finished. Only about half of the site was ready this year, which meant the overflow sections were here and

Page 15: Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine

there, but that will be resolved before the 2013 Emerald Coast Cruizin Show. This year's Emerald Coast Cruizin went by overwhelming fast. At the end of each day I was so tired… it was dinner, the hot tub, a little TV and I was out like a light. Several times during the event I wanted to slow things down a little and savor the event even more.

I've always said the fun you have at car shows is limited to the folks you're with. That statement is so true, but a big giant car show with great people from 40 or more states…now that's what I'm talking about. Emerald Coast Cruizin is a keeper! Get whatever you call your Hot Rod out of the garage and enjoy that 17 FOREVER…Hot Rod state of mind!

Til next month… Terry

1930 Chevrolet pickup Owner: Jerry Roberts - 63 year old retired army vet from Smith Station, AL

Truck - All steel 1930 Chevrolet ¾ ton stake bed that was found in St. Paul, Minnesota back in August of 2010. Utilizing the stock frame that was shortened 16 inches several modifications began:

All the wood supports where replaced with 1x2 steel tubing. The original sheet metal was then reattached to the cab support rounding the corners to give the truck a smoother look. The roof structure was fabricated from 1x2 and ¾ steel tubing that was wrapped in 20 gauge steel.

Front end - Mustang II with coil over shocks, 2 inch drop spindles, disc brakes, power Rack and Pinion. The original steering column and oak finish steering wheel where modified to fit the power rack.

Engine - SBC 283 cu. With 305 heads, Thumper Cam, Edelbrock intake and Quick Fuel 600 cfm carburetor.

Transmission - Turbo 350 with a Lokar shifter

Rear end - 8” Ford, 3.55 gears, disc brakes with 4 link setup and coil overs.

One of the most difficult projects was the fabrication of the front windshield frame which has the original push out feature. Since this is a Chevrolet and not a Ford, parts are hard to come by. The pieces that didn't come with the truck were fabricated with lots of trial and error.

Jerry started this project in August of 2010 and will probably continue until it is passed down to his 8 year old grandson Hunter. As we all know these projects are never completely finished. Next up will be a buckskin leather interior and a vintage air system. After that who knows maybe a blower for that 283???

Jerry and his son Wayne also have a 1924 Durant roadster Rat Rod that they built about 3 years ago and a 1934 Buick. The Buick is currently under construction and will be powered by a LS1 / 4L60E out of a 2000 Camaro utilizing RideTech Shockwaves to keep the ride smooth and low.

One look at this Hot Rod and you know you better be holdin’ on when the light turns green… at least that’s what Jim Kotto from Columbus, GA tells me.

His 1984 S-10.. has a 454 cubic inch Chevy mill under that tun-nel ram, and that is supplying power to a turbo 350 trans. You bet-ter have a light foot on the pedal, because you can bet there’s no problem twisting the 9 inch Ford with the 410 gears.

The top has been chopped 7 inches, and that’s a hood off a 61

Dodge Polaris replacing the old metal roof. A grill from a ‘40 Ford deluxe sits in front of the Speedway front suspension.

What a Hot Cajun Pro Car… and Shayla Broadway must have thought so too. Her great smile just shows you that this little ol’ Hot Rod has that “I wanta’ take a ride in it….” look written all over it!

Better hold on girl…

Emerald Coast Cruzin 2012 It was great time had by all! We are very exited about joining the Coast

Cruizers & meeting all the great people associated with this group. My name is Vic Seay & my wife is Donna, we live in Boston, Ga. We

have a yellow 1932 highboy coupe that we built in 2007. the coupe has an aftermarket little M block, Brodix aluminum heads, 871 Kuhl blower, baffled zoomies, and we love Cruizin’ in.

This was our 4th year in Panama City Beach and our second year bringing the coupe. On Saturday, the big day of the show, Donna drove our truck to the pier across the road from the show. She asked me to go with her to the beach for a couple of hours & get a bite of lunch. While out on the beach we got a call from our good friend Walter, who we met 3 years ago, telling us Jimbo wanted to use our ‘32 for some kind of photo shoot. I told him I had the key but they could roll it around anywhere they wanted.

Well I don't know what kind of shoot it was but everyone was laughing about it and said they had fun.

We are looking forward to getting our Coast Cruizers MotorSports Magazine, to see what they did and reading about all the great people and events.

editors note: Photographer, Rob Cole, was taking pictures at the Emerald Coast Cruizin, when a Harley rumbles in to Killers pinstriping area. Rob noticed the girl getting off the bike. When he walked over to met her, an infectious smile, and a “Hi how are you doing” was all it took to know he found a perfect pin-up girl for the Hot Rod Alley shoot.

So we got permission to roll out Vic & Donna’s yellow ‘32 for some background color, Walter at the wheel, and added Rick & Lisa’s blue ‘48 Chevy pick-up for a little more contrast, then placed Rena on her newly pinstriped Harley right in the middle.

Folks I gotta tell you we weren’t the only people taking pictures… it got crowded fast… well

Meet Rena Mitchell.

My name is Rena Mitchell I live in Panama City Beach Fla. I'm 29 years and holding and a single mom of 2 wonderful children and a beautiful grandbaby. I work as an asst. manager at the Wicked Wheel gift shop since day one of opening in April of this year.

My interest are riding my Harley Davidson Street Glide "prenup" (long story behind that one), Hot rods, traveling and spending time with my family and friends.

I consider myself a people person and working at the Wheel gives me an opportunity to meet people from all over the U.S.

My motto in life is....... "I admit, I’m a handful! I'm strong willed, independent and some what outspoken. I make mistakes and out of control

sometimes and hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst then you sure don’t deserve me at my best"

I love the pinup look for many reasons. It's a classic style that evokes femininity, strength and sex appeal. But still being classy. It’s not just a look its an attitude.

My favorite past pinup was Marilyn Monroe and current is Sabina Kelly. Both are blondes but I can say....blondes don't always have the most fun !!!!

My wish in life is to live what years I have left to the fullest. Vic & Donna Seay

Murry's Ride By: J.R.

Murry is Bobby and Sherry's family dog. Murry's ride is a 1950 Flxible Clipper bus. Murry knows he king of the bus and rides in style. It started out as a transit bus for Baylor college. In 1952 the bus was sold to a gentleman who turned it into a RV. Bobby and Sherry of Waynesboro, MS got the bus a few years later. (The Flxible Clipper was built from 1937-1942 and 1944-1950.)

The gentleman that bought the bus in 1952 sent the bus back to the Flxible factory to be made into a RV. The bus was stripped completely inside and out. The inside was rebuilt with a bedroom, shower, bathroom, kitchen and dinning table. Completely repainted inside and out then kitchen cabinets installed and a Acme efficiency stove, refrigerator and sink combo was installed in 1952 and it still works today. The Acme company has been in business for over 80 years. Sherry said they just replace the electric burners on the stove which Acme had in stock.

The bedroom started out with bunk beds, it now has a queen size bed, the bunks were installed when their kids were growing up. Bobby has done a lot of work on the bus. The back section of the bus between the engine and a bulkhead that was installed is the mechanical compartment, with the a/c, plumbing, electrical and storage. There is a generator mounted under the left side. This is a complete RV just like the one's on the road today except this one is 62 years old.

Bobby and Sherry have a picture album that starts when the bus went back to the factory to be converted into the RV.

The Flexible company was started in 1913 by Hugo Young and Carl Dudte in Loudonville, OH. They built a flexible coupling for motorcycle sidecars so the sidecar would lean in corners. In 1919 the name was changed to Flxible company,

The demand for sidecars dropped in 1924, so they started building hearses and ambulances using Buick, Studebaker, Cadillac and Reo chassis. Then in the 30's and 40's they started building transit buses on GMC chassis using the Buick straight 8 engine.

In 1953 Flxible absorbed Fagoel Twin Coach and then the Southern Coach of Evergreen, AL in 1964. Flxible was purchased by Rohr Industries in 1970, sold to Grumman in 1978 and sold to General Automotive Corp. in 1983. General filed for bankruptcy in 1996. Flxible licensed producers in Mexico in 1965 to produce the bus because import duties were so high they couldn't ship the buses to Mexico.

There is a lot more history to Flxible than can be told here. The history can be found at Wikipedia.org/wiki/Flxible. There were some well know people involved in the Flxible bus story, Charles Kittering of General Motors, Roger Penske, and a Chinese Manufacturer. A biannually rally in Loudonville, OH is held on even-numbered years in mid July for all Flxible bus owners.

Joe Rogers, Sr., Co-Founder of Waffle House Inc. OUR MISSION

Our mission is to deliver a unique experience to our customers through delivering great food, friendly, attentive service, excellent price and a welcoming presence. OUR HISTORY

When Joe Rogers, Sr. bought a house from Tom Forkner in Avondale Estates, GA., in 1949, neither one knew where that relationship would take them.

It's the mid 1950's. Joe Rogers and Tom Forkner were neighbors–Joe working for a national restaurant chain, the Toddle House, and Tom in the local real estate business. Since employee ownership was not available with the Toddle House, the idea of starting a business they could own and share some ownership with other seemed like a good idea. Joe and Tom wanted to create a restaurant focused on people–both the associates and customers–while serving quality food at a great value.

On Labor Day 1955, their dream became a reality–and an icon was born–when the first Waffle House restaurant opened its doors for business in Avondale Estates, an Atlanta suburb. After Unit 1 opened there were no plans for another Unit, but the first restaurant established the Waffle House tradition of providing the friendliest service in town. Customer loyalty developed and the business grew steadily. A couple of years (1957) Unit 2 was acquired and by 1961, there were four small restaurants.

In 1961, Joe left Toddle House and went to work full-time at Waffle House®. Tom went full time soon after. The 1960's saw the emergence of a restaurant chain focused on customer service with a short order concept

and, true to its founding beliefs, shared the ownership generously with management. The company began to expand and new units were built in Georgia and neighboring states. The "Yellow Sign" soon became a familiar landmark along city streets and interstate highways across the Southeast. Under the guiding philosophy of "better before bigger," Waffle House restaurants continued to grow in both new and existing markets. Since day one, each Waffle House® restaurant has provided guests with a unique and comfortable dining experience. At every restaurant, the bright "Yellow Sign" greets customers like an old friend, the jukebox plays a variety of the now famous Waffle House songs and associates give customers a heartfelt greeting as they walk through the door. In

addition, each restaurant is open 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, inspiring urban myths such as "Waffle House doors have no locks."

Most established businesses of today started as just an idea among a few people with no expectation of great size and success. Joe and Tom did not envision what Waffle House has become, but they stuck by their concept and their belief in shared ownership. Now more than 50 years later, the southern icon, the southern icon has become A Unique American Phenomenon® by serving GOOD FOOD FAST®.

As the Waffle House system celebrates more than 50 years of service, we look forward to making the next generation of customers and associates part of the family. At Waffle House® restaurants, success is measured by one thing–PEOPLE.

WHY WE SHOOT DEER Why we shoot deer in the wild. (this was a letter from someone who

wants to remain anonymous, who farms, writes well and who actually tried this.)

I had this idea that I could rope a deer, put it in a stall, feed it up on corn for a couple of weeks, then kill it and eat it. The first step in this adven-ture was getting a deer. I figured that, since they congregate at my cattle feeder and do not seem to have much fear of me when we are there (a bold one will sometimes come right up and sniff at the bags of feed while I am in the back of the truck not 4 feet away), it should not be difficult to rope one, get up to it and toss a bag over its head (to calm it down) then hog tie it and transport it home.

I filled the cattle feeder then hid down at the end with my rope. The cattle, having seen the roping thing before, stayed well back. They were not having any of it. After about 20 minutes, my deer showed up - 3 of them. I picked out a likely looking one, stepped out from the end of the feeder, and threw my rope.

The deer just stood there and stared at me. I wrapped the rope around my waist and twisted the end so I would have a good hold. The deer still just stood and stared at me, but you could tell it was mildly concerned about the whole rope situation. I took a step towards it, it took a step away. I put a little tension on the rope, and then received an education.

The first thing that I learned is that, while a deer may just stand there looking at you funny while you rope it, they are spurred to action when you start pulling on that rope.

That deer EXPLODED. The second thing I learned is that pound for pound, a deer is a LOT stronger than a cow or a colt. A cow or a colt in that weight range I could fight down with a rope and with some dignity. A deer-- no Chance. That thing ran and bucked and twisted and pulled.

There was no controlling it and certainly no getting close to it. As it jerked me off my feet and started dragging me across the ground, it occurred to me that having a deer on a rope was not nearly as good an idea as I had originally imagined. The only upside is that they do not have as

much stamina as many other animals. A brief 10 minutes later, it was tired and not nearly as quick to jerk me

off my feet and drag me when I managed to get up. It took me a few minutes to realize this, since I was mostly blinded by the blood flowing out of the big gash in my head. At that point, I had lost my taste for corn-fed venison. I just wanted to get that devil creature off the end of that rope.

I figured if I just let it go with the rope hanging around its neck, it would likely die slow and painfully somewhere. At the time, there was no love at all between me and that deer. At that moment, I hated the thing, and I would venture a guess that the feeling was mutual.

Despite the gash in my head and the several large knots where I had cleverly arrested the deer's momentum by bracing my head against various large rocks as it dragged me across the ground, I could still think clearly enough to recognize that there was a small chance that I shared some tiny amount of responsibility for the situation we were in. I didn't want the deer to have to suffer a slow death, so I managed to get it lined back up in between my truck and the feeder - a little trap I had set before hand... kind of like a squeeze chute. I got it to back in there and I started moving up so I could get my rope back.

Did you know that deer bite? They do! I never in a million years would have thought that a deer would bite somebody, so I was very surprised when ...... I reached up there to grab that rope and the deer grabbed hold of my wrist. Now, when a deer bites you, it is not like being bit by a horse where they just bite you and slide off to then let go. A deer bites you and shakes its head--almost like a pit bull. They bite HARD and it hurts.

The proper thing to do when a deer bites you is probably to freeze and draw back slowly.. I tried screaming and shaking instead. My method was ineffective. It seems like the deer was biting and shaking for several minutes, but it was likely only several seconds.

I, being smarter than a deer (though you may be questioning that claim by now), tricked it. While I kept it busy tearing the tendons out of my right arm, I reached up with my left hand and pulled that rope loose.

That was when I got my final lesson in deer behavior for the day. Deer will strike at you with their front feet. They rear right up on their back feet and strike right about head and shoulder level, and their hooves are surprisingly sharp ... I learned a long time ago that, when an animal - like a horse - strikes at you with their hooves and you can't get away easily, the best thing to do is try to make a loud noise and make an aggressive move towards the animal. This will usually cause them to back down a bit so you can escape.

This was not a horse. This was a deer, so obviously, such trickery would not work. In the course of a millisecond, I devised a different strategy. I screamed like a woman and tried to turn and run. The reason I had always been told NOT to try to turn and run from a horse that paws at you is that there is a good chance that it will hit you in the back of the head.

Deer may not be so different from horses after all, besides being twice as strong and 3 times as evil, because the second I turned to run, it hit me right in the back of the head and knocked me down.. Now, when a deer paws at you and knocks you down, it does not immediately leave. I suspect it does not recognize that the danger has passed. What they do instead is paw your back and jump up and down on you while you are laying there crying like a little girl and covering your head.

I finally managed to crawl under the truck and the deer went away.

What do you buy when you go Christmas shopping with your girl friend's sister? …… Trouble.

A young man wished to purchase a present for his sweetheart and after careful consideration, he decided on a pair of gloves. Accompanied by his sweetheart's sister, he went to a department store and bought a pair of white gloves. The sister purchased a pair of panties for herself. During the wrapping, the items got mixed up. The sister got the gloves and the sweetheart got the panties. Without checking the contents, he sealed the package and sent it to her with this note: Dearest Darling,

This is a little gift to show my affection for you on Christmas. I chose these because I noticed that you are not in the habit of wearing any when you go out in the evenings. If it had not been for your younger sister, I would have chosen the long ones with buttons, but she wears the short ones that are easy to remove. These are a delicate shade, but the lady I bought them from showed me a pair that she had been wearing for three weeks and they were hardly soiled. I had the sales girl try them on and she really looked great. I wish I could put them on you for the first time. No doubt other men's hands will come in contact with them before I have a chance to see you again. When you take them off, blow in them before putting them away as they will naturally be a little damp from wearing. Be sure to keep them on when you clean them or they might shrink. I hope you will like them and wear them for me on Friday night.

All my love, P.S. Just think of how many times I will kiss them during the coming year. Also, the latest style is to wear them folded down with the fur showing.

The Rudolph Song Once upon a time there was a

King in Lapland called Rudolph. He had bright ginger hair so his people called him Rudolph the Red.

Now Rudolph the Red was bad-tempered and argued a lot. He gave his poor wife, Gertrude the Green, a terrible time. No matter what she said he had to argue.

One winter's day Gertrude the Green looked out of the palace window and said, “Oh dear, it's snowing again. You'll have to clear the footpath before mother comes to tea.”

“Humph!” Rudolph the Red grunted. He didn't fancy shoveling snow and he didn't want Gertrude the Green's mother coming to tea. “That's not snow. It's rain!” he argued.

“But it's white and fluffy and drifting,” Gertrude the Green tried to tell him.

Rudolph the Red hid behind his newspaper and snapped, “It's rain!”

Gertrude the Green became quite angry. “Gertrude the Green knows snow, darling!”

“Yes,” retorted her husband. “And Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear!”

“What a great title for a song!” Gertrude the Green exclaimed.

Artificial or a real Christmas tree? By: elider@

Growing up we always had a real tree and I don't think there was a choice. It was either flocked or green. Maybe they had ugly plastic ones but I really don't remember. When I moved out on my own, my roommate and I always had a tree, a Charlie Brown tree but it was real and we had fun decorating it.

Even when I first married we always had real trees. Then the kids came, divorce soon after and I moved in with my Mom. A few months later Christmas was around the corner. We lived a few blocks from a nursery and it was decided that I would just drive there for our tree. So off I went.

That day it was raining and cold but that wasn't going to stop me. At the time I had a large station wagon and knew the tree would fit in the back plus I wasn't going that far. When I arrived at the nursery, I chose a nice Douglas Fur tree for $80. Expensive I would say. The man loaded the tree in the car, tied down the back and I drove home.

Remember, it's raining and cold. By myself, I unloaded the tree and made it threw the front door with the wooden tree stand still on. Why in the world I didn't have the guy remove it is beyond me. And why didn't he volunteer?

First order of business is the removal of the wooden stand. I tried and tried to remove it but it wasn't going to budge. I load the tree back into the car, drive the few blocks, had the guy remove the tree stand. I then load the tree back into the car and I arrive back home.

I unload the tree again without the wooden stand, make it through the front door and its time now for the metal tree stand. Mom knelled down,

holding the tree stand, while I'm holding this massive tree trying to fit it onto the metal stand only to hear her say that the truck of the tree was to big for our metal tree stand. Can you imagine my language now? Yes, I was about ready to throw this tree out the door and take a match to it. Once I calmed down, I went in the pouring rain and cold to the hardware store for a larger metal tree stand. Big sigh, I'm tried just remembering this day. Once home, the new metal stand worked, the tree was up, got decorated and Christmas would soon be a pasting thought. The day after Christmas, we went shopping for an artificial Christmas tree because we knew they would be on sale. We found a beautiful one for only $50, cheaper then the real deal. Next year and for nineteen years after, that tree went up for Christmas. Think I made a sound investment? You bet I did. The first year we decorated it, my brothers family were over for Christmas dinner. He looked at our artificial tree and said how beautiful it was, not knowing it wasn't real and asked how we watered it.

I told him very carefully. That was twenty-six years ago and I still only decorate with an artificial

tree. Last year it was time for another new tree, my third one to be exact. Now artificial trees are everywhere and in almost every store. You just need to shop around to get the best deal. My new one has lights already on the tree and its beautiful. Personally, I prefer artificial since I love Christmas, the tree is up the day after Thanksgiving and who worries that it will die out.

The only complaint is the smell. I do miss that but a candle works or a live pine wreath will do the trick too. Now, I'm looking forward to Christmas all over again.

The Matinee Rocker: By: DD Thunders. When the weather gets cold the theaters get hot!! So many major releases coming from Hollywood that I could stay warm burning all my ticket stubbs! Lets get right to it. First up is a movie I was excited to see. It has interesting trailers and star power that can’t be denied. Cloud Atlast is a movie with a plot that hasn't been used before. This epic tale of déjà fu and cosmic connections between random people throughout the universe was written by David Mitchell, Lana Wachowski, Tom

Tyler and Andy Wachowski. Directed by Tom Tykwer, Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski. I knew it would be a movie you have to pay attention to follow and I almost made it to the closing credits. The basic premise of the story is how people seem to relieve there lives over and over in different places, times and scenarios.

It was really interesting to see Tom Hanks play multiple characters who always ran into the beautiful Halle Berry. Sometimes you had to focus on the eyes to see who they were though the centuries of life, death and redemption. It was also fun to see Hugh Grant play a unflattering character whos a bit on the ugly side. It was nice to see Mr. Grant make the transition from leading man heartthrob to character actor who is not such a nice guy. The film had no direct mention of any religions but seemed to follow the Buddhist stream of thought that we have to keep reliving our lives in order to correct our past mistakes to make it to heaven.

Although I'm not a practicing Buddhist, I have wondered sometimes if I have done certain things before. This really does make a great story. The make up and effects were awesome and keep this tale of struggle and redemption seem believable. The plot did start to slow the movie momentum down a bit and the complicated interwoven live stories were hard to follow after awhile. This kind of movie really needs to be seen a few times to make sure you didn't miss any important plot twist while your getting a refill on your 10 gallon (except NYC where they are outlawed) soda and nachos and cheese snack. Being an adult ADD poster boy did not help me hang with the twist and turns but this movie is worth another viewing and a Netflix punch up next year. I give this Movie a 6 out of 10 picks.

Next up is the Bond movie Skyfall. Written by Neal Purfis and Robert

Wade. Directed by Sam Mendes whose work I have always enjoyed. Starring Daniel Craig as the always hip 007. Back reprising her role as M was Judi Dench and the villain was everybody's favorite bad hairdo bad man Javier Baroom. Ralph Fiennes, Naomi Harris and Bond girl gone bad, Bernice Marloe round out this well paced story.

I’m not a big Bond franchise fan but this was a good movie. My favorite bond movie is Live and Let Die. It has the best Bond theme song (live and let die by the cute Beatle Paul) and was filmed in New York and New Orleans, two of my favorite cities! I know everybody's favorite Bond actor is Sean Connery but I think Daniel Craig is number two on the short list.

This Bond story was what it should be. Craig's Bond is a intelligent and calculated semi bad boy who gets the job done. Well dressed and well versed in English coolness, this modern Bond man does his job for his country better than any CIA, FBI or secret service agent could ever imagine. The good ole USA needs somebody like Bond! Maybe Bruce Willis could sign up for the gig!!

The main theme of this well written tale was Bond is in twilight years and maybe he should retire along with his boss, Judi Dench. They both might be past there prime but still get the job done old school style. This movie is part of the biggest movie franchise ever put to film and had the goods. Cool cars, great motorcycle chase scene and hot girls in trouble. What more do you need! It did have the feel of a changing of the guard in

the motherland and I would not be surprised to see some new blood in the next action packed script that is tells the tale of Bond, James Bond! I give this film 7 out of 10 picks.

Last on the list the Indie film, Perks of being a Wall Flower. I might have missed this small film offering from Tinsel Town if a close friend of mine, Matt Diehl had not told me how good this movie is. I do enjoy smaller, character driven Indie films and this one did not let me down! It was written and directed by Stephen Chbosky. The story is set in the 1990's Pittsburg Pa. and stars Logan Lerman as high school freshman Charlie. Emma Watson plays his first love and best friend girl or maybe girlfriend Sam. Erza Miller plays the troubled but true friend to both Sam and Charlie Patrick. Rounding out the cast is modern comedy film star Paul Rudd as Charlie's favorite teacher Mr. Anderson. This is a classic coming of age story that has all the interesting characters set in real life problems that many high school casualties have suffered. I am a big fan of the teen movie master John Huges and this movie flies this flag high and proud. Real good acting is a pleasure to watch when you know the actors choose this project for the love of a good story over the love of a big paycheck.

Charlie's high school tale of loneliness and loathing is something many of us have gone through in the tender years of high school. Charlie was an outsider with a troubled past when he walked on this high school campus. He finally makes some friends in school and the story unfolds perfectly in this teen drama. The well written script moves along at a good pace and the complex back story of Charlie keeps you on your toes and hoping he makes it through the bullies and bad drama that we all have grown up with while trying to get out of school and start leaving the life you hope you can.

I sometimes have a problem with movies that the writers use just to push their favorite songs and false hipness of their school days but this story walks the line. This film could be the new John Hughs style breakfast club for the 21st century movie goer! The script deals with serious subject matter and has a smart, comedic take on the usual problems teenagers have to go through to make it to adulthood. I really liked Emma Watson in this small film. She has the chops to keep this story moving forward and is the cool girl we all wish we could have hung with. This movie does not shy away from serious subject matter such as being a gay student, depression, and loneliness that is a real part of young life. I hope this movie sets the bar for future tales of growing up and going against the grain. I give this film 9 out of 10 picks.

Well, let me wrap this months reviews. Don't forget to support your

local theaters, just remember to turn your phone off when you sit down in your local theater and never get caught sneaking in candy!!

See you at the matinee! ………… DD Thunders

Our thanks to the Myles Sharp Band who entertained the crowd at the MADD Cruise-in & Candlelight Memorial.

Driving sober is a choice. Why is it some of us will just chance it…. Ever wonder why the people who drive around in these old classic cars,

hot rods, street rods and antiques seldom drink at the events they attend. Sure there may be a beer in their cooler but you can bet they will leave plenty of time between drinking it and getting behind the wheel and drive their high dollar labor of love.

The last thing they want to do is wreck their car…. So why is it we will take the chance at other times? I’ve had “one too many” a time or two and we all know when “we realize it.”

Guess the next thing you tell yourself “man I better get home” and sober up. So since you can still walk under your own power, you figure your able to drive. (you're thinking boy I hope I don’t get caught by the cops)

When is it you realize your not driving as well as you should and maybe your thinking about pulling over.

All this time your thinking about what happens to you…. What if you were thinking of the other people around you.

Can you even imagine the phone call that takes place when the accident you never thought would happen, happens.

So many people will be affected by a decision only you can make. A lifetime of sorrow for some, a lifetime of shame and guilt for others. When all you had to do is ask “Hey can you get me a safe ride home. I don’t need to be driving!”

During this time of year when drunk driving crashes

are most prevalent, Gulf Coast Businesses and MADD are partnering with all local and state law enforcement agencies to deter individuals from driving drunk. We are encouraging everyone to plan ahead, designate a sober driver, or arrange a safe ride home, before embarking on their holiday festivities. ……...

We also sponsor the Safe Ride Home Program. The Safe Ride Home Program helps local bars and restaurants lower

their liability when their guests have a little too much to drink. We offer participating establishments the ability to give their guests a FREE ride home. This effort helps keep people from drinking and then driving. This program is FREE to the participating establishment, FREE to the patron and a great help to the community at large. We applaud and thank those establishments for their efforts. This program has been blessed by MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving).

For more information about this program, please contact management at YELLOW CAB. 228-385-7777

This year it was the Biloxi Police who hosted the event. All the local law enforcement agency's, local chapter and national chapter representatives of MADD, Yellow Cab, Edgewater Mall, Waffle House and Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine want to thank all the Car Cubs and cruisers who took the time to attend and show their support to the family and friends who were here to remember their victims of drunk or impaired driving.

It is our hope each year this annual event will have an impact on all drivers and will help deter everyone from “just chancing it!”

Take the pledge to Arrive Alive….. Don’t Drink & Drive

A Blue Rose

Having four visiting family members, my wife was very busy, so I offered to go to the store for her to get some needed items, which included light bulbs, paper towels, trash bags, detergent and Clorox. So off I went.

I scurried around the store, gathered up my goodies and headed for the checkout counter, only to be blocked in the narrow aisle by a young man who appeared to be about sixteen-years-old. I wasn't in a hurry, so I patiently waited for the boy to realize that I was there. This was when he waved his hands excitedly in the air and declared in a loud voice, "Mommy, I'm over here."

It was obvious now, he was mentally challenged and also startled as he turned and saw me standing so close to him, waiting to squeeze by. His eyes widened and surprise exploded on his face as I said, "Hey Buddy, what's your name?"

"My name is Denny and I'm shopping with my mother," he responded proudly.

"Wow," I said, "that's a cool name; I wish my name was Denny, but my name is Steve."

"Steve, like Stevarino?" he asked. "Yes," I answered. "How old are you Denny?"

"How old am I now, Mommy?" he asked his mother as she slowly came over from the next aisle.

"You're fifteen-years-old Denny; now be a good boy and let the man pass by."

I acknowledged her and continued to talk to Denny for several more minutes about summer, bicycles and school. I watched his brown eyes dance with excitement, because he was the center of someone's attention. He then abruptly turned and headed toward the toy section.

Denny's mom had a puzzled look on her face and thanked me for taking the time to talk with her son. She told me that most people wouldn't even look at him, much less talk to him.

I told her that it was my pleasure and then I said something I have no idea where it came from, other than by the prompting of the Holy Spirit. I told her that there are plenty of red, yellow, and pink roses in God's Garden; however, "Blue Roses" are very rare and should be appreciated for their beauty and distinctiveness. You see, Denny is a Blue Rose and if someone doesn't stop and smell that rose with their heart and touch that rose with their kindness, then they've missed a blessing from God.

She was silent for a second, then with a tear in her eye she asked, "Who are you?"

Without thinking I said, "Oh, I'm probably just a dandelion, but I sure love living in God's garden."

She reached out, squeezed my hand and said, "God bless you!" and then I had tears in my eyes.

May I suggest, the next time you see a BLUE ROSE, whichever differences that person may have, don't turn your head and walk off. Take the time to smile and say Hello. Why? Because, by the grace of GOD, this mother or father could be you. This could be your child, grandchild, niece, nephew or any other family member. What a difference a moment can mean to that person or their family.

From an old dandelion! “Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest up to God! "

“People will forget what you said, People will forget what you did, but

people will never forget how you made them feel!"

Editors note: This young man is paying back his benefactors' by currently posting a 3.9 GPA out of a 4.0 in college. Everyone who was or is involved with ‘Bill’ has to feel a sense of pride for his accomplishment.

Many things run through my mind as the cruising weather fades away. I get to thinking about all the fun my car buddies and I had this past summer and how we made new friends that had new and interesting cars we had not scrutinized before. We had hilarious times “bench racing” under the canopy. We got into mischief during our gatherings that may have made us appear to be much less mature than we are. It was, however, just good clean fun with companions that we have not always known, both male and female.

Members of the car hobby might be a strange appearing group to the uninitiated. I have heard various people talking about how expensive they think the cars are. Perhaps some people think we are wealthy. Others view us as old “grease monkeys”. I believe the name “car enthusiast” is more fitting. Whatever we are called, the fact remains that our purpose is to promote automobile history, preserve it for the future, and fight legislation which impacts the hobby in a negative way.

Have you ever thought of yourself as a philanthropist? You should. Millions of dollars are raised every year and given to charities by car hobbyists. They then use it wisely for their causes. Miracles are performed with this money. Lives are changed in ways that would be impossible without your generosity and hard work. People come to support our charity events because they want to get a close-up view of our cars. You are right there and available for them to talk to. It makes it all less mysterious. You are an important blessing for many, many people.

Here is a true accounting of what I am referring to. Names have been changed to protect the innocent: This is about an only child who never knew his father and grew up without any male interaction. He came in contact with a mentor when he was a freshman in high school and spent time with him until his graduation. Cars were one common ground for their relationship. His mother worked hard and provided a safe home for him and encouragement to succeed. We will call this young man Bill.

Bill worked at a part time job as he attended high school. He kept high grades, even though there was a 60% drop out rate in his school and they ranked among the lower 10% of high schools in Indiana scholastically. Bill saved his money, intent of attending college. No person in his family had ever graduated high school, much less gone to college, but he realized the opportunities that an education offered. During the four years of high school Bill worked and saved enough money for his first year college tuition and books. He pursued scholarships, and by the time he was ready to graduate from high school he had secured two. He would be forced to live at home, however, to afford college.

While Bill was busy working toward his future, a group of car enthusiasts decided to provide a way for him to get back and forth to his college classes. A 2005 Pontiac G-6 that had been declared a total loss by an insurance company was purchased. Car gals and guys came out in

force to work on this vehicle. Parts were donated by businesses. Trade schools provided space, equipment, guidance, and manpower to put this car back on the road. Lots and lots of people were involved it this endeavor. The people involved in the rebuild were not even acquainted with Bill. They came together because of their benevolence and belief that this was the right thing to do. This was an incredible act of kindness and humbling to witness. This has left and everlasting mark on Bill and his mother. It changed their life and their attitude. They call it a miracle.

You all are involved in this. The dedication you have to this hobby makes these stories an everyday occurrence. The giving of yourselves, your time, your money, your skills, your knowledge, and your passion has created something much larger than a way of preserving our automobile history. It demonstrates what is best in the American spirit; that we regularly come together as a family to help one another.

So this holiday season I am thankful for car guys and gals. I hope you stop and reflect on all you do, and give yourselves an “Attaboy” for affecting millions of people in a positive way. Can we do better than that?

Happy Holidays Gotta Cruise

Some are in wheel chairs, many are dead, none of my articles have

they read, but my thoughts always return to them. Merry Xmas and Happy Holidays to all of you!

I was noticing the new schedule for Gulfport Dragway, every Wednes-day night starting Nov. 7th thru Dec. 29th. In my neighborhood (Waveland, Clermont Harbor, Lakeshore) we have several active drag racers, and some pretty famous former drag racers.

For example a mile from my house on Clermont Blvd. is Lakeshore Automotive at 5687 Lower Bay Rd., Bay St. Louis, MS. The owner-operator is Chris L. Bermond who was owner driver of the 2008 Dragster pictured in the photo. His ad states ASE certified, (and he certainly is) doing computer electronics timing and all the latest tune up and repair that need on the latest cars. Chassis work, brakes, and More! With help of Freddie Samrock and others Chris started racing at 14 years old in the 80's and grew up in the 60's Camaro's. Gulfport and Hattisburg E. T. Racing were not fast enough, so he moved up to Super Comp. Racing. Competitors like Luke Bogaki, Scotty and Edmound Richardson provided plenty of very fast competition.

1996 was the year Chris brought out his dragster with the big block engines, ni-trous, with Nicoll Hammond on the en-gine duty, and on to Texas, LA, Tenn, Fl., Ga. No. Carolina. You can find him on Google, winning the “Iron Man” and many other contests.

His biggest, baddest engine was 500 Cubic inch, being “blown” with a GMC 871 Blower. Speed 205 mph in 6.59 sec. listed in NHRA.

Lately he has been building and racing late model Mustangs with EFI and nitrous.

Next photo you see is Brad Dunham and his first dragster. Split bumper `70 Camaro, chopped top, all steel, 4 speed Muncie “crash box” tranny. Best time was 9.8 128 mph, and that was with a 327 cubic inch Chevy turning 8800 RPM with hi rise intake & Schneider Cam.

Next photo is Brad in the Midget I have in storage in Arizona. I have the car for sale, less engine, for $8500.00.

His first drag race was at Irwindale in Calif. in our 1957 Pontiac Star Chief. It was a tri power 347 with a Schneider flat tappet cam.

Dave Schneider and I were good friends, he is 2 years my senior at 87 but still goes to the shop every day. That's Brad on the out-

side taking the checker at Irwin-dale and making old Dad real proud! He is 53 years old now, he was 16 when we ran Irwindale. In case some of you cruisers don't remember what a 57 Starchief looks like here are photo's of the grill & side view with Pineapple at the wheel. It looks a lot better with her in it.

I was talking with Jerry Cantrell at Schneider Cams in San Diego, and here is the latest from them and Hot Rod Magazine.

If you have need for any info, I have known Dave and Jerry for 30 years. Call me if you need more info 228-671-6216.

In this article you will see a photo of Brad in his “Run what you bring” 69 Camaro that I modified in 1981 before the sprints started running “wings”. He set the track record for stocks at Corona, Calif. ½ mile dirt. He also set the track record at Chula Vista ½ mile dirt and lapped the field. We were running the same 8800 RPM 327 Chevy engine with a 292-302 Schneider Cam that was in the drag car (70 Camaro) but I in-stalled titanium connecting rods and the valve stems were gun drilled.

The black rubber on the front bumper was 10” wide garage door flap that dragged on the dirt same as they have in NASCAR today on pave-ment. They outlawed us in 3 races, and from then on, the entry blanks said “No Billboards”.

That's me with the white shirt and black Frisco Jeans on the fence behind the car.

I was talking on the phone tonite with Paul MacDaniel who has been one of our local drag racers for many years. He likes the small block Chevy, same as me. He is putting together an-other drag car. Be sure and note the premium engine lube from Schneider, it will save you a lot of money in the long run. In my option Dave is the smartest engine man, and Engineer around today. Last time we talked,he was running in America's Cup, or whatever the boats from all over the world called those races.

Mele Kalikimaka and Hau`oli Makahiki Hou! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! Christmas time is great in

Hawaii. Temp is usually 76 degrees. They have great night boat parades in Waikiki Beach (I know they have them here, but not like Hawaii) also, Santa comes right on the beach in his Canoe for the kids. We all hang out at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Moana Hotel, or the Outrigger Hotel all right on the beach!! Or, we just lay out on the beach. I like to hang out at the Outrigger Hotel. They have Duke's Canoe Club. Named for the father of Modern Surfing, and out fitted with much of Duke Kahanamoku Memorabilia. Duke's Canoe Club is both an open air bar & a very popular steak-and-seafood grill inside. They always have a Hawaiian Group playing great Hawaiian Music in the late afternoons and all my friends and cousins and un-cles hang out. Below is one of my favor-ite pictures of me, my uncles, friends and (Pineapple's Husband) at Duke's on Christmas Day. (This was a while back)

In the course of the next twenty years he continued to defy time, competing in four Olympic Games and winning five medals. He finally retired at age forty-two, he could still swim as fast as when he was twenty-one. Back to Mississippi: Well, I made my decision it's a “dead heat” between Debbie at Anita's and Pat

at Rickey's for my HAWAIIAN SUNSET COCKTAIL. Both are winners, and both are non-advertisers in this publication. Last night “Cricket” of Crickets Honkey Tonk in Lakeshore dropped in to Anita's while Debbie was making my usual and related that his “Bucking Bull ride is usually twice a month”. Best idea is to call, and get the schedule, for he is open Thursday thru Saturday with great bands!

You remember the Kiln bar that was “Sawed Off”, then “Reds Pub”, then “Cowboys and Angeles”? I stopped by and much interior work going on inside and the “crew” advised it would be a couple of weeks before they open as “Pops” restaurant and bar. Rumor has it that it's a relative of C&R's, so you can bet the food will be excellent. Also in the rumor mill is the word that “Steamers” is not going to open due to the new code that requires it to be 25` above ground level! “Wow” the county and state are sure going to miss that tax income!! Also, Anita's is now open since the fire next door (Mike Woods is back) at CJ'S Grocery & Deli.

Since I was in the Kiln, I decided to go see Diane( Owner of Dempsey's). I stopped at the bar first to get a glass of wine. Then I walked over to the Swamp Shack Gift Shop next door. Diane said they are open Tues. thru Sat 11am-9pm & Sun 11am-3pm. Swamp Shack has little bit of everything. Diane said for Christmas she plans on having Gift Baskets and Gift Wrapping etc. (see Dempsey's ad) This is the only gift shop in the Kiln that I know of. You folks from Diamondhead are going to love it.

As I was driving back to Bay St. Louis I passed the “Launch” which used to be “Cove or “Cave” on 603 before Katrina. Cheryl Southern (Joe's wife) is working various shifts . Rickey is the mgr. and tells me business is growing and they open early a.m. in case you have a breakfast thirst

“Rickey's in Bay St. Louis is now only open for lunch from 11 to 2 p.m. Tues & Wed. Thurs-day,Friday, Sat. 11 till???? Lunch & Dinner. You Long Beach people, (that's you too Paul Mc Daniel) - Trax on Railroad Ave. still has the great screwdrivers for $1.50 from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. According to Peggy, Jim's wife who was opening the other morning when I drank my breakfast. I think its still up for sale, and they have added an outside bar on the patio which seats 8 or 10.

I stopped in Gulfport at the “Tiffin Room” and went into shock seeing Jan (the owner) behind the bar! This was a first since Katrina, seems Thelma took off to take a trip to San Francisco to root for

my favorite pictures of the Duke

Page 49: Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine

49 December 2012 www.CoastCruizers.com

the 49's football team. (any particular player Thelma?) Long way to go when the T.V. carries it too. Kim tends bar week days, Monday thru Thursday and was my favorite cat sitter while we were waiting for the replacement house from Katrina. She and “Easy” got along fine, which is unusual because she likes men, not woman that visit. (no I did not teach her that) The “Great” American car (his Lincoln Town car) broke a “ball joint” on the left front wheel, (what ever that is) so there it sets like a bird with a broken wing!

He says its too cold to go out to “Good to Go” (see their ad) so, I guess it will sit until the frost goes away! He's in the station wagon (I call it the grocery getter) So don't laugh when you see it! My Precious (300zx) is running great. It's Nov 11 and our 30th anniversary. I thought it would be great to go to El Maguys (see their ad) and have a late lunch. I am driving so I jumped into precious. (Larry's 6 ft. so it takes him a little longer to get in precious) I surprised Larry and plugged in his Glen Miller tape. All Larry said is “now I know it's our anniversary”. Some of you might say who is Glen Miller? He was one of the great big bands in the 40's. I really like El Maguey because the bar is separated from the dining area. Yet, you can sit at the bar and see the dining area. We go directly to the bar (of course). Daniel was working. He is a great waiter and also will fix you a drink. He goes ahead and pours us 2 glasses of Chardonnay (how did he know that?) and brings us a big bowl of chips and their great salsa. Juan, the owner comes over wishes us a happy anni-versary. He then brings us his special El Maguey Dip which he made his self. ( Black beans, habanero sauce and cheese dip) You have to scoop in your chip to get to the black beans. It was great! I have to say hi to my two other favorite servers, “Elizabeth and Hector”.

It's Saturday and decided I'd better go deliver some magazines. I got into precious and headed to Kent & Sue's Quick Stop and The VFW on Lower Bay Rd in Lakeshore, MS. Sam the Commander of the VFW was sitting at the bar. I said hi to Sam and he said he would like to take out a ad. So, I decided to have a wine cooler since they only have beer or BYOB. (see his ad this issue)

I then head for the Ugly Pirate and Sloppy Dog in Bay St. Louis and drop off magazines. Since I was out I decided to check out the new mar-ket “Froogel's (dunbar & 90) Bay St. Louis. It used to be Winn Dixie. It's great! (Beas who hangs out at the VFW & Pat bartender at Rickey's, you two will love it)! I decided to head on home and take a break, be-cause it's Saturday and time to go to the VFW in Bay St. Louis. (see their ad) We walk in and Mike is tending bar (not a happy camper). Lacy his daughter not in sight. Bobby is no where in sight. Bobby must be at a car show with his phantom 66 Mustang (that I have never seen) Don't get me wrong! Bobby does make a cameo appearance once in awhile. The hall was rented again (price must be right). Watch next month for some of my old and new places!

Mr. Jerry Jagneaux's 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air A Cajun Santa and his Sleigh

Christmas is upon us so I started thinking, "who do I know that owns a hot rod with a Christmas feel to it, that I can write about?" Mr. Jerry Jagneaux's 1957, bright red Bel Air popped into my head, so I gave him a call and he agreed to help me out!

Mr. Jagneaux's sporty 1957 Bel Air hard top was acquired on his wife's birthday five years ago. That's what I call a spectacular birthday gift! It has a 350 Chevrolet engine, a 650 Holley dual pumper, a small cam, power traction and 4.11 gears in it. It came to him already painted cheerful red, but he did all of the interior work himself.

Jerry has been a professional upholsterer for over forty-six years. He has always loved hot rods and remembers drag racing on the streets in his first one, which was a green 1956 Ford. Jerry is a true Cajun man, originally from the Lafayette area, and is well known for his precise and artistic upholstery work. As a young man, he began his career at Lafayette auto upholstery then went to Landry's seat covers and glass. He worked at Landrys for over twenty years as the shop foreman until it closed down. Mr. Jagneaux then decided to open a shop of his own and has been his own boss ever since.

Besides upholstering hot rods, Mr. Jagneaux also upholsters airplane seats, bikes and boats. He is now semi-retired but can't resist when someone brings in a beautiful antique automobile, that needs some T.L.C. His wife has to constantly remind him that he is supposed to be retired, but the love of his craft prevents him from it.

He met and married his wife Nelwen forty-three short years ago. They have three children and five wonderful grand-children. He is pictured in the magazine as the 'Cajun Santa" with one of his grandchildren, Tanner "Rudolf" Cormier and a friend of the family, Brock "Comet" Champagne.

Mr. Jerry also has a 1969 Ford XL that he is in the process of restoring. Now, this is not a Galaxie he says, its an XL! He has been looking for parts for the car and when he tries to tell someone the make and model of it, they always try to tell him that it is a Galaxie. He then has to explain that it is not a Galaxie and prove it. He loves the surprise on their faces as they realize that he is right! Jerry's XL is a two door hard top, with a 351 Windsor engine. He says an interesting feature of the car is that all of the controls are on the left side of the dash. "Hey Mr. Jerry! When are you going to finish this one so we can feature it in Gulf Coast MotorSports?"

If anyone knows where he can find parts for this gem, please contact me at [email protected] I know he would be grateful for any information that will enable him to complete this rare project.

Day 1: Dear Boudreaux, Thanks for de bird in de Pear tree. I fix it las' night with dirty rice. I doan tink de pear tree will grow in the swamp, so I swap it for a Satsuma. Day 2: Dear Boudreaux, You letter say you sent two turtle doves, but all I got was two scrawny pigeons. Anyway, I mixed dem with andouille an made some gumbo out of dem. Day 3: Dear Boudreaux, Why doan you sent some crawfish? I'm tired of eating dem darn birds. I gave two of dose prissy French chickens to Marie Trahan over at Grans Bayou an fed the tird one to my dog, Phideaux. Marie needed some sparing partners for her fighting rooster. Day 4: Dear Boudreaux, Mon Dieux! I tol you no more friggin birds. Deez four, what you call dem "calling birds" were so noisy you could hear dem all de way to Napoleonville. I used dere necks for my crab traps, an fed de rest of dem to de gators. Day 5: Dear Boudreaux, You finally sent somethin useful. I like dem golden rings, me. I hocked dem at da pawn shop in Thibodeaux and got enuf money to fix da shaft on my shrimp boat an buy a round for da boys at de Raisin' Cane Lounge. Merci Beaucoup! Day 6: Dear Boudreaux, Couchon! Back to da birds, you coonass turkey! Poor egg suckin' Phideaux is scared to death at dem six geeeses. He tried to eat dems eggs and dey peck de heck out ah his snout. Dey good at eating cockroaches, though. I may stuff one of dem wit erster dressing on Christmas day. Day 7: Dear Boudreaux, I'm gonna wring your fool neck next time I see you. Thibeau, da mailman, is ready to kill ya. The merde from all dem birds is stinkin' up his mailboat. He afraid someone will slip on dat stuff and sue him good. I let those seven swans loose to swim on de bayou and some duck hunters from Mississippi blasted dem out of de water. Talk to you tomorrow. Day 8: Dear Boudreaux, Poor ole Thibeau, he had to make tree trips on his mailboat to deliver dem 8 maids a milkin and their cows. One of dem cows got spooked by da alligators and almost tipped over da boat. I doan like dem shiftless maids, me no. I tolt dem to get to work guttin fish and sweeping the shack but dey say it wasn't in dair contract. Dey probably think they to good ta skin nutrias I caught las night. Day 9: Dear Boudreaux, What you trying to do Huh? Thibeau had to borrow the Lutcher ferry to carry dem jumpin twits you call Lords-a-Leaping across the bayou. As soon as dey gots here dey wanted a tea break with crumpets. I doan know what dat means but I says, *Well La Di Da. You get Chicory coffee or nuttin.* Mon Dieu, Emile. What I'm gonna feed all dese bozos? Dey too snooty for fried nutria, and de cows done eat my turnip greens. Day 10: Dear Boudreaux, You got to be outs you mind! If de mailman don't kill you, I will for sure. Today he deliver 10 half nakid floozies from Bourbon Street. Dey said dey be *Ladies Dancin* but dey doan act like ladies in front of dose Limey twits. Dey almos left after one of dem got bit by a water moccasin over by da out-house. I had to butcher 2 cows to feed toute le monde an get toilet paper. The Sears catalog wasn't good enuf fer dose hoity toity lord's royal behin. Day 11: Dear Boudreaux, Where Y'at. Cheerio an pip pip. Your 11 pipers piping arrives today from the House of Blues, second lining as dey got off de boat. We fixed snuffed goose and beef jambalaya, finished da whiskey and we having a fais-do-do. Da new mailman he drink a bottle of Jack Daniel an he having a good time yeah dancing with de floozies. Thibeau he jump off de Sunshine Bridge yesterday, screaming your name. If you get a mysterious, ticking package in de mail, doan open it man. Day 12: Dear Boudreaux, I sorry to tell ya but I not your true love anymore, no. After da fais-do-do, I spent de night with Jacque, de head piper. We decide to open a restaurant and gentleman's club on de bayou. The floozies, pardon me, Ladies dancing can make $20 for a table dance, and de lords can be waiters an valet park de boats. Since de maids have no more cows ta milk, I trained dem ta set my crab traps, watch my trotlines, an run my shrimping business. We will probably gross a million clams nex year.
