A finger on the pulse of the industry: FRUIT LOGISTICA 2016

Retail is in a constant state of flux - especially in the freshproduce trade. But how is this industry changing? To findout, the German fruit trade association (DFHV)commissioned a study at the University of Göttingen.Under the direction of Professor Ludwig Theuvsen at theDepartment of Agricultural Economics, the studyinvestigated whether and how global fresh produce flowsare changing. The results of the study indicated that Europeremains a key export market, but is becoming lessimportant. The Asian market, on the other hand, is gainingimportance. For some products, particularly in the premiumsegment, this could even result in long-term supplyshortages in Europe.

What conclusions can and should the international freshproduce sector draw from this study? How does it need toadapt? These and many other questions will be answered inBerlin at FRUIT LOGISTICA, the world's leading tradefair for the fresh produce business. FRUIT LOGISTICAGlobal Brand Manager Wilfried Wollbold stresses the tradefair's importance. "Today more than ever it is important tonot only monitor this process of change, but also to play anactive role in shaping it. As the hub of the global freshproduce industry, FRUIT LOGISTICA offers an idealplatform."

FRUIT LOGISTICA 2016 from 3-5 February is wheresome 65,000 trade visitors from 135 countries will meet tomake contact with potential and existing business partners, negotiate deals, and learn about the latest developmentsand innovations in the fresh produce business.

Trade visitors can register online, purchase tickets inadvance and print them out. This enables them to getstarted at the trade fair without delay. Online registrationalso offers the advantage of reduced ticket prices.

Ministry of Environment and Water utilizes drone technology to help eradicatered palm weevil scourge The Ministry ofEnvironment and Waterhas revealed that it isusing drone technologyto help combat the redpalm weevils in line withits strategic goal ofdeveloping andimplementing a key planto fight and eradicateagricultural pests.

Eng. Mohamed MousaAbdullah, Director ofAgriculture ResearchDepartment, Ministry ofEnvironment and Water, said, “The adoption ofdrone technology forms part of the Ministry'sefforts to implement the best environmental andagricultural practices to achieve sustainabledevelopment and reinforce the UAE's leadership inthe world of innovation. This is in line with theinitiative launched by H.H. Sheikh Khalifa binZayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, declaring2015 as the year of innovation.”

He added that the drone's remote sensors willfind the reason behind the spreading of red palmweevils-collating all necessary data. Additionally, the locations of the infected areas of the red palmweevils and severity of infections they cause can bedetermined using the technology's aerialphotography capability and other sensors.

The drone's accurate sensors conduct technicalcomprehensive survey of palm farms by measuringthe electromagnetic radiation energy being releasedby infected trees. The data is then collected to mapand measure its spectral signature, which identifiesthe types, locations and degrees of injuries.

agricultural sector. To support the process, FAO

published a set of updatedguidelines to assistgovernments in carrying outtheir national-level agriculturalcensuses, tailored to variousdifferent country needs andcapacities. This is the latestedition of guidelines whichFAO provides every 10 years.

These censuses are crucial forgovernments to implementevidence-based policies to fosteragricultural and ruraldevelopment, ensure access toland, improve food security andreduce the adverse environmentalimpacts of agricultural activities.Census data are also essential forthe private sector to makeinformed decisions that guide

their investments in agri-businessactivities.

The information collectedprovides an accurate picture ofthe agricultural sector and areliable sampling frame forcurrent agricultural surveys. Inparticular, the censuses entail acomplete account of thestructure of the agriculturalsector, including the numberand size of holdings, land use, crop area, crop intensity, irrigation facilities, agriculturalinput use, livestock numbers, aswell as farmer demographicsand employment.

Based on countries'experiences and lessons learntover previous decades, the newguidelines form part of the FAOcoordinated World Programme

for the Census of Agriculture, which covers the period 2016-2025. For the first time, thenew census programmeprovides guidance on how toobtain and integrate data onfisheries (capture fisheriesactivities as aquaculture wasalready included) and ongreenhouse gas and ammoniaemissions from agriculturalactivities.

"The use of these guidelinesby FAO member countriesensures that census results areharmonized and internationallycomparable, and allowscountries to benchmark theirperformance against others,"said Pietro Gennari, FAO ChiefStatistician.

Delegates from the136member nations of theInternational Treaty on PlantGenetic Resources for Food andAgriculture (ITPGRFA) havegiven their approval to set up aninternational informationgateway for the genetic data offood crop seeds.

The agreement to proceedwith the proposal for a GlobalInformation System (GLIS)from the FAO-based seed treatycame during a week-longmeeting of the 6th biennialGoverning Body that ended inRome on October 9.

As climate changeaccelerates, it is vital forfarmers, scientists, plantbreeders, private sectorcompanies to be able to developnew plant varieties resistant topests, floods and drought, inorder to maintain sufficientagricultural production levels.

To do this they need to knowwhat is where, and how to getit, currently no easy task in themyriad number of actors thathold that information.

Information is not just withseed banks and research centresbut also in the plants growing infarmers' fields, and uncultivatedland, the so-called crop wildrelatives.

The system has to be globalbecause no country is self-sufficient in crop germplasmthat has been travelling acrossborders for centuries.

Seed potato exports arebooming with big stridesbeing made to open evenmore new marketsIn 2014-2015 seed exportsbeyond the EU were up 15.5%on the previous year, to ahighest-ever total of 90,000t. InScotland, which accounts foraround 80% of UK seed potatoexports, the sector is estimatedto be worth £80-100 million, and growing.

“There is a distinct buzz inthe seed export market, whichis doing really well, tradingon our positive position onplant health, with freedomfrom Dickeya, brown rot andring rot,” says Robert Burns,Head of Seed & Export atAHDB Potatoes' Edinburgh

office. “So it is really allabout staying on top of that, through diligence andattention to detail.”

Most of the growth camefrom a market share jump inEgypt, which now accounts for58% of all GB seed exports.“We spend a lot of time theretalking to plant health officialsabout the quality, vigour andvery positive plant health statusof our seed,” he says.

Indeed, GB seed's freedomfrom bacterial diseasesDickeya, brown rot and ring rothas now pushed Dutch seed offthe top spot. “It is somethingour EU competitors can't claim, but we can, thanks to ourisland status, cooler climateand continuing efforts to

remain disease free. Our flush-through system, with amaximum of seven generationsof seed multiplication, the SafeHaven certification scheme, noseed imported into Scotland, and no stock taken from thebottom of the process to the topthrough clonal selection, allcontribute to this.”

But the sales surge in Egyptis a two-edged sword. “It's alot of eggs in one basket, andone variety, Hermes,” says MrBurns. “It is a huge risk ifthere was ever a problem.” So,efforts are being made todevelop new markets, tospread risk and make the mostof new varietal requirementsand differences inclimates/seasons.

Humintech produces a largequantity of granulate humicacid as Perlhumus, watersoluble humic acid asPowhumus and liquid humicacid as Liqhumus and 6% Fe-humate as Humiron. Humitechstarted the production of humicacid with variousmicroorganisms as antagonist

of several soils born disease.BioHealth is one successful

antagonist to soil born fungi.

BioHealth® TH/BS WSGDESCRIPTIONBioHealth® TH/BS WSG is ablend of selected Trichodermaharzianum and Bacillus subtilisstrains, humic acids andseaweed extract. Trichodermaharzianum and Bacillus subtilisare antagonist to soil bornepathogens like e.g. Phythium,Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia orFusarium, whose hyphens andorgans can be disposed byTrichoderma's comprehensiveenzyme tools. ThusTrichoderma suppresses thespreading of these pathogens.Bacillus subtilis have evolvednumerous mechanisms for bothattack of other fungi or bacteriaand for enhancing plant androot growth. During a cultureBacillus subtilis nourishes onthe root exudates in therhizosphere and thus builds abiological protective barrieragainst soil borne pathogens.

In latent affected plantmaterial BioHealth® TH/BSWSG remains ineffective, dueto the reason that the antagonistcannot follow the parasite intothe inside of the plant. Therefore BioHealth® TH/BSWSG has to be regarded as a

soil conditioner or rather aplant intensifier and under nocircumstances as a fungicideagainst soil pathological fungi.ORIGINBioHealth® TH/BS WSG isobtained through alkalineextraction from German Leonardite (highly oxidizedlignite), high quality isolatedand selected Trichodermaharzanium fungus, high qualityisolated and selected Bacillussubtilis strains and extractedfrom Ascophyllum nodosumseaweed.BENEFITS Destroys the hyphens of

most soil born pathogenslike e.g. Pythium,Phytophthora, Rhizoctoniaor Fusarium

Bord na Móna has a peatresource of 80,000ha ofpeatlands and has been

harvesting peat for over 75years. With a vast selection ofpeat bogs and peats to choosefrom Bord na Móna has beeninnovating to produce productsto help growers satisfy thedemanding specifications andyield expectations of theircustomers. This becomesincreasingly important asgrowers get larger and systemsof production get moresophisticated with increases intechnology and automation.

Our focus: Improved harvesting

techniques - In 2015 Bord naMóna's Engineering Teamhave used differenttechniques in harvesting tomaximise the fraction outputfor our customers. A higherpercentage of Fraction 2 (6-12 mm) and Fraction 3

(10-25mm) helps customersin providing stability ofgrowing media for long termpot plants and nursery stock.

Reducing limitations of waterquality - Declining waterquality is a global issue ofconcern as populations growand industrial andagricultural activitiesexpands. For horticulturehigh salinity and hard waterparticularly in areas of hightemperature can causeproblems in growing plants. The high buffering capacityof Bord na Móna peats areshowing themselves to be anessential constituent in thegrowing media mix inbuffering against highsalinity and high alkalinity.

Developing Irish black peats -The key objective here is thecharacterisation of Irish blackpeats. These peats have goodadhesive properties. Theyalso have a high buffer water

holding capacity. Followingthis advancement incharacterisation these peatscan be mixed with other peatsto provide growing mediawith differing physicalproperties for propagationand growing high qualityplants.

Optimising Aeration -Speciality premium productsSod Moss and Bin Sod havealways been at the forefrontof Bord na Móna's salesstrategy. STEP Systems develops anddistributes worldwide mobile andstationary analytical systems and

tools, particularly designed for testing andmonitoring of soil, water and air. Thecompany has been specializingparticularly in the scope of horticulture, agriculture, associated research andexperimentation.

STEP Systems was established inNuremberg, Bavaria, in 2004. Theportfolio ranges from simplethermometers to complete laboratorysystems. The company is an innovativesupplier of advanced measurementtechnology: it develops, manufactures anddistributes portable pH-, EC- and activity-measuring devices with special sensorsthat can measure various parameters suchas salinity, conductivity and pH inseconds directly in the soil, providingquick and precise information about thecurrent nutrient status of a plant.

Due to STEP Systems' many years ofexperience in the field of plant nutrition, the company can offer its customers morethan only advanced measuringtechnology, as measurement resultsprovide the basis for an individualinterpretation, i.e. the correct evaluation. The conclusions and required plantcultivation measures are explained to theuser. Moreover, especially for thecomplete analysis system LASA AGRO3900 the company developed a softwarefor fertilizing recommendation.

For a future-oriented company likeSTEP systems the cooperation withteaching and research institutes of thegreen sector is self-evident. "Our toppriority is always to develop anapplicable technique of the latestscientific findings in order to make itusable for the practice," points out theManaging Director, Harald Braungardt.

Thus, STEP Systems has recently

completed a project, in which the CO2measurement in the soil has played animportant role. Another current projectsupported by the Federal Ministry ofEconomics, deals with an automatedmobile soil moisture measuring system. This system measures moisture indifferent soil layers, calculates therequired irrigation volume accordinglyand immediately documents the irrigationprocess on a web platform, visually andin tabular form.

With its mobile hand-held measuringinstruments STEP systems also providescontinuous development. Thus, the newCOMBI 5000 will be presented during theIPM show 2016 in Essen. It unites theprevious individual instruments of the 3000series for pH, EC, activity, temperature andsoil moisture measurements in one devicewith intelligent chip technology. ForHarald Braungardt this new all-in-one unitis the universal tool for every plantproducer for rapid on-site inspection of allplant-relevant parameters.

Braungardt cares particularly about thecollaboration between academia andindustry. "I think it is simply necessary tocooperate closely in order to provide newdevelopments for the practical use," hestates. Exactly this customer-orientedattitude was certainly the reason why thejury of the most important horticulturalmagazine “TASPO” awarded STEPSystems in 2007 as the "Best customer-oriented supplier of technical equipmentfor the green business". Later, in 2010,the jury chose Harald Braungardt as thewinner in the category "Entrepreneur ofthe Year” in the green business.

Globally active and locally present"With our products, being dedicated to“Made in Germany” quality, we havegreat opportunities in export business,"says Braungardt. STEP Systems operatesglobally and sees this strategy as the rightway forward. Only this year STEPSystems has participated in 11 majorinternational trade fairs all over theworld. "So we stay in permanent contactwith our partners and can ensure anindividual support of a specific customergroup - namely, the plant producers -with all their special demands and

peculiarities," concludes HaraldBraungardt.

As a leading company on the marketSTEP Systems is a member of INDEGA- an association representing the interestsof the German industry for horticulture.Harald Braungardt is the ManagingDirector and Member of Board of theINDEGA, therefore he is stronglyinvolved in all activities of this

association of the German entrepreneurs. The 80 German member companies offervarious technical products, plants andservices for horticulture. In addition, theyregularly exchange information andjointly develop markets and businesssegments. Here Braungardt is a popularcontact person for all markets worldwide,as STEP systems now accounts for about65 percent of its sales abroad.

What have been themain trends inagriculture in the

Africa & Middle East regionin 2014-15? How is the trendfor mechanisation evolving inthe region and how do you seeit evolving as we go forward? The downtrend of oil andcommodities prices has affectedthe industry in 2014. As theOECD-FAO AgriculturalOutlook 2015-2024 reportpoints out, prices for allagricultural products areexpected to decrease over thenext ten years. Although furtherinvestments could raise yieldsand production significantly inAfrica, modest productiongrowth is expected.

Industry volumes haveincreased in 2015 for tractors,

especially in the medium rangesegment, and also for combineharvesters. This trend is set tocontinue as Middle Eastern andAfrican countries strive todevelop their agriculture inorder to meet the growingdemand for produce.

The introduction of modernfarming practices and effectivemechanization has the potentialto dramatically raiseproductivity. Where agriculturein Middle Eastern and Africancountries has begun a shift inthis direction with the supportof their governments, it has alsobeen attracting greaterinvestment from the privatesector. This process has veryspecific requirements, fromsimple, robust tractors that areeasy to use and service to the

high-horsepower modelsbristling with productivity-boosting features, as well as awide range of baling andharvesting equipment.

How does New Holland meetthe diverse needs of themarkets where mechanisationis most advanced and thosewhere it is still in the earlystages?New Holland Agriculture hasbeen at the forefront of themechanization process, gainingan outstanding leadership inthese markets. In fact, approximately one out of everythree tractors and sold in theMiddle East and Africa in 2014were New Holland, and forcombines it was even more.

In its citation, FortuneGlobal says “Jain has built itsbusiness by improving thelivelihoods of 5 million smallfarmers in India. Based in thecountry's western Maharashtrastate, Jain began selling micro-irrigation systems in 1986,when it recognized that thetechnology, commonly used inindustrial agriculture, could beadapted for local growers, whose tiny landholdings weretraditionally watered by rain orblunt flooding techniques. As

Jain's “More Crop Per Drop™”slogan promised, yieldsincreased dramatically - 50% to300%, depending on the plant -as did farmers' incomes. AndJain continues to boost both inother ways as well: It hasintroduced more-viable cropvarieties and trained farmers onmore productive growingtechniques, such as high-densityplanting for mangoes.

The company also branchedinto solar water pumps(electricity is often scarce onthe farm), financing, and foodprocessing - for the likes ofCoca-Cola and Uniliever- sothat there is a ready market forthese farmers' wares. Vencomatic introducesits renewed grouphousing system for

hatching egg production: theVeranda Breeder. This royalclass housing system offers 5star accommodation forbroiler and layer breeders. Bycombining a high level ofautomation with the use ofvertical space, the systemoffers the most efficientproduction of high qualityhatching eggs.

The new Veranda Breeder

has been designed to meet therequirements of modernbreeders, and fully compliesto European standards foranimal welfare. Birds arehoused in a healthyenvironment and havecontrolled access to ascratching area, where theyare able to perform theirnatural dust bathingbehaviour.

High numbers of first classeggs is the key to success inbreeder housing. Excellentegg quality is guaranteed withthe integrated nest box thatcloses at night, whichprevents contamination by thebirds. Possible out-of-nesteggs roll to the nestautomatically, as the slats aresloping.

The manure falls onto amanure belt and is transportedout of the house frequently.Ammonia and fine dust levelsare extremely low, improvinga healthy climate for bothbirds and employees. Next to

a perfect climate, the birds arehoused on hygienic slats. Thisreduces the contact of birdswith manure, thus improvingbio-security, and reducingexposure to pathogens.
