Having its name derived from the Persian language, where ‘Gul’ stands for rose and ‘Barga’ for leaf, and constructed in the shape of “Roseleaf”, this place justifies itself as a land of lavish living. Gulbarga’s old fort has a number of interesting buildings, imposing tombs of Bahmani Kings and around 15 towers that are inspired from the Islamic architecture. Those of you who have an eye for detail will learn that the architecture of the Jama Masjid reflects the same style as the one followed in the great mosque in Cordoba, Spain. Chor Gumbad is one of the most prominent attractions of this city. It is built atop the hill and is located on the west side of Gulbarga Fort. TheGulbarga fort is the obvious place to start ahistorical journey; it looks strong, thoughdesolate. Originally built by one RajaGulchand and later fortified by AlauddinHasan Bahman Shah (1347-1358), it has 15towers and 26 guns. A thick double wall withmassive bastions encloses it. The fort issurrounded by a moat in which cowherdswash buffaloes and tonga-wallahs theircarriages. Within the fort lies the massivecitadel called Bala Hissar, hewn from blackstone. It has semi-circular turrets on thesides and corners. Atop it is an old cannonthat is nearly 25 ft long. The Jami Masjid, which resembles the Great Mosque ofCordoba in Spain, is an elegant structurewith wide arches. Built in 1367, it’s one ofthe earliest mosques in South India. Northof the fort is the 14th-century Shah BazaarMosque and the 15th-century Dargah ofSheik Siraj-ud-din Junaidi, the religiousteacher of Alauddin Shah Bahmani.
