From The Editors Desk

The beginning of the calendar year is at its heart a January of newness and clean

states of the chance to do things differently and with more attention to purpose. In reality,

it’s also one of the most challenging times of year. As we enter 2017, there are many

more opportunities to achieve our goals and aspirations.

The Gujarat University newsletter, Vidyavrutt and journal Vidya has retrieved to its

usual punctuality and now comes out its pre established dates. In our opinion, the

content of our newsletter and journal fulfills our objective of striking the right balance

between academic and extra curriculum activities. At the same time we have included

educational component that we feel is perfectly compatible with the publication of the

best original material at our disposal.

We would especially like to invite you to consider and document your own first

principles as guest editorial, comments of our activities, tweets for something else

entirely. Please join us.

We thank all those who have contributed to make this issue a success. Wish

Guest Editorial

Wishing you all a very Happy New Year.

The new year would be like the old one if we keep doing the same old things.one thing

that we all can do is let go the things we can’t change and focus on things that we can.

Somehow We resist change,its human and this tendency increases with age. The young

are willing to explore and take risks. They are prepared to move out of their comfort zone

and experiment. May be that is how one can define youth. Change changes everything. I

think the reason why we hold on to our memories is that they don’t change..we either get

btter or better. We either take what has been dealt to us and allow it to make us a better

person, or allow it to tear us down. The choice does not belog to fae, it belongs to us. If

an egg is broken by outside force,life ends. Bt if it is broken from inside, life begins. So,let

us begin by breaking ourselves free from fear on uncertainty. Let us resolve that we are aware

and happy. Let us begin this year with hope and promice of achievement.This newsletter

showcases the achievements of one and all who strive to make our University proud. Let

us resolve to make a positive change in ourselves so that it is reflected in our actions and

words. Let us be more humble and more tolerant. Let us respect each other more. Let us

come together because together everyone achieves more.

As a part of our Indian culture, the programmewas embarked by remembering almighty withprayer, lamp lighting by distinguished dignitariesfollowed by university anthem. The autumngathering was welcomed by Dr R. J. Verma, Headof the Department, followed by addresses fromDr. R. G. Bhatt, Dr. Jagdish Joshi, Dr. HimanshuPandya and Dr. M. N. Patel.

After successful completion of inauguralfunction, a key note lecture was delivered by Dr.Udhaya Kotecha, Geneticist, Zydus Hospital,Ahmedabad on "Various Diagnostic Strategies forGenetic Findings". The post lunch session, wasconducted by Dr. H.N. Highland, Professor,Department of Zoology, Gujarat University byintroducing a systematic talk on pedigree analysis.She also organized a practical session forgathered audience on various pedigree symbolsand pedigree charts.

The prodigious second day (28/09/2016)was started with a talk by Dr. Prabhudas Patel,

Professor and Head, Cancer Biology Department,Gujarat Cancer and Research Institutue (GCRI),Ahmedabad on "Clinical significance of PCR(Polymerase Chain Reaction) Technologies inGenetic Diseases". He introduced how the in-frontpopulation uses PCR tool and techniques torectify genetic diseases. The second talk wasdelivered on "Stem cell & its Applications" by Dr.Himanshu Patel, Director, Stem Cure Pvt. Ltd. andConsultant Embryologist. The practical session ofthis day was conducted by Dr. Gaurang Sindhav,Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology,Gujarat University with fine hands-on training forparticipants on "DNA Isolation".

The meticulous third day (29/09/2016) wasbegun by Dr. C. G. Joshi, Professor of AnimalBiotechnology, Anand Agriculture University, Anandwith his talk on "DNA Sequencing Technologies"as latest implicative tool in the field of Genetics.The session was followed by a very interactive talkon "Basic Concepts of Infertility" by Dr. ChaitanyaNagori, Director, Dr. Nagori’s Institute for Infertilityand IVF, Ahmedabad. Later, Dr. Sonal Panchalfrom Dr. Nagori’s Institute for Infertility and IVFdelivered very illustrative and exemplary sessionon "Role of Ultrasound for Diagnosis of FatalChromosomal Abnormalities." The next considerable colossal day (Day 4-30/09/2016) started with very informative talk on"Diagnosis of Cancer" by Dr. Hemangini Vora,Associate Professor of Cancer Biology andSenior Scientific Officer, Head,Immunohistochemistry and Flow CytometryDivision, GCRI. The talk on "CytogeneticsRevisited" by Dr. Frenny Sheth, Director andManaging Trustee, FRIGE’s Institute of HumanGenetics, Ahmedabad. After lunch, the sessionwas taken ahead by Dr. Kaid Johar on "RecentAdvances in the Fluorescence based Diagnosisof Genetic Alteration". At last but not the least, Dr.Divya Chandel concluded this day with a suitablemixed practical orate on Karyotyping and PBLC(Peripheral Blood Lymphocyte Culture) with handson training.

The prolonged fifth day (01/10/2016) of thecourse was started with a deliberative talk on"Illuminating genetics alteration; F.I.S.H(Fluorescence in situ hybridization) basedApproaches for Next Level of Genetic Diagnosis"by Dr. Sonal Bakshi, Assistant Professor, Instituteof Science, Nirma University, Ahmedabad.Followed by tea break, Dr. Rakesh Rawal, SeniorScientific Officer and I/C Medicinal Chemistry andPharmacogenomics lab, GCRI, Ahmedabaddelivered a very futuristic session on "Role of NGS(Next Generation Sequencing) and Microarray inClinical Diagnosis of Genetic Disorders". In the

concluding session of the day, Dr. D. D. Jhalashared a very advanced and interestingpresentation on "Polymerase Chain Reaction(PCR)" including its background, stepwise detailprotocol and its implications followed by itsdemonstration to participants.

The last day (3/10/2016) was sparked by Dr.Kamayani Mathur, Professor and Head,Department of Psychology, Gujarat University,Ahmedabad explaining the significance ofPsychology in Genetic Disorders. Before theappetizing lunch, the second session of the daywas conducted by Dr. Ami Mehta, AssociateProfessor, N. H. L. Municipal Medical College, V.S. Hospital, Ahmedabad on "Prenatal Diagnosis".The last session of this course was delivered byDr. Sanjay Mehta on "Bioethics and its Impact inClinical Practice and Research".

This STC programme was very successfullyaccomplished with 70 Registered Participantsincluding Faculty members from distinguishedUndergraduate colleges, Clinicians from variousmedical colleges, Ph.D Research Scholars andPostgraduate students.

The valedictory session accomplished withgood monologue by our eminent Chief Guest Dr.Manish Nivsarkar, Director, B.V. Patel PERDCentre, Ahmedabad and Dr. R. G. Bhatt, Director,School of Sciences. The prominent guests ofvaledictory session graced the audience with theiralleged and articulate speech. The session wasfollowed by certificate distribution and High Tea.

Professor Tulasi Satyanarayan visited theDepartment on 23rd August under the UGCexchange of Professor scheme. Professor T.Satyanarayan has M.Sc., Ph.D., F.I.C., F.A.C.B.degree, Professor ,University of Delhi Southcampus . He has over 40 years of teachingexperience; authored four other popular books;published about 60 research papers in nationaland international journals; Gold medallist of NagpurUniversity; recipient of the Dr Krishnaswamy BestTeacher Award (of Siddhartha medical college);Fellow, National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry,USA, and the Institute of Chemists, India; Memberof Research Board of Advisors for the AmericanBiographical Institute; honoured as an OutstandingScientist Worldwide-2007, by the InternationalBiographical Centre, England. He delivered alecture on "Retrival of thermos-alkali-stablexylanase from environmental metagenomeand its application".The lecture was designed todevelop interest in concepts of biochemistry inlogical and stepwise manner.

Another invited lecture was delivered byProfessor R. C. Dubey on 14th July 2016, entiltledBacteriophage therapy, in which he gave anintroduction on how bacteriophage can be utilizedto cure particular disease. Bacteriophage therapyis very specific method to treat any disease. Dr.R.C. Dubey is Professor and Head in theDepartment of Botany & Microbiology, GurukulKangri University (Haridwar). He earned his M.Sc.and Ph.D. degrees from the Banaras HinduUniversity, (Varanasi) in the year 1981 and 1986,respectively. His field of interest is rhizospheremicrobiology and phytopathology having expertisein biocontrol of soil- borne plant pathogens,mycorrhizae, rhizosphere microbiology,mycorrhization helping bacteria (MHBs)), microbialbiotechnology and botanical pesticides. He haspublished more than 78 research and reviewpapers in the national and international journals ofrepute. Prof. Dubey has authored four books viz.,A Textbook of Microbiology (4th ed. 2012), ATextbook of Biotechnology (4th ed. 2006) and

Practical Microbiology (3rd ed. 2012) and AdvancedBiotechnology (1st ed. 2014 He has been themember of the Academic and EvaluationCommittee, State Biotechnology Programme,Govt of Uttarakhand, and Convener- BiotechnologyFundamental Glossary- CSTT, HRD Ministry, Gov.of India. Conservation (2004-2008). He wasnominated as the Councillor of the Indian BotanicalSociety for three years (2011-2013)

Both lectures were outstanding and basedon the latest research in the subject. The studentswere overwhelmed by gaining the knowledge anddiscussion shared by the professors.

Down syndrome is a genetic condition thathas been attached with social stigma for a verylong time. Individuals with Down syndrome haveone extra chromosome 21, because of which theyface certain challenges, such as delayeddevelopment, intellectual impairment, low muscletone, low immunity and higher incidence of heartproblem.

The Department of Zoology, BMT and HumanGenetics has been organizing interactive eventsto create awareness on Down syndrome. Theseoccasions act as a platform for parents, experts,students and society to intermingle and grasp thedepth of their situation.

On April 1st, 2016, the Department, staff andthe students of School of Sciences, GujaratUniversity celebrated World Down Syndrome Dayby bringing together affected children and theirparents. They were proactive in their participationand were given an opportunity to showcase theirtalents in the fields of music, dance and art. Thisgave each one of them a sense of accomplishment

and normalcy, while the parents smiled andlaughed in their proud moment with their eyesglistening with tears of joy.

After the initial meetings, another wasconducted on 24.04.2016 to discuss theimplementation of the proposed "Pilot Study onearly intervention on Down syndrome" at theDepartment of Zoology, BMT & Human Genetics,Gujarat University, Ahmedabad. The meeting wasattended by Dr. R J Verma (Head, Dept. ofZoology), Dr Nina Vaidya (Pediatrician, Navsari),Dr Neha Mehta (Pediatric, Physiotherapist), DrVaishali Hydrabadi, Dr Divya Chandel (Dept. ofZoology)and Dr Gaurang Sindhav (Dept. ofZoology). This meeting was followed by anotheron 15.05.16 where Dr Madhvi Joshi (Sectorspecialist GSBTM), Dr Bhaskar Vyas (AshishPathalogy), Dr Udaya Kotecha (Pediatrician) hadalso attended to discuss the fine prints of earlyintervention in Down syndrome. After many suchmeetings a plan is being designed on EarlyIntervention in Down syndrome.

A meeting was organized on August 6th, 2016by the Down Syndrome Welfare Club to discussthe responsibilities and agenda of the Downsyndrome cell at the Department. Two meetingswere held on September 10th & 11th, 2016,wherein 10-15 families participated and the conceptof Down Syndrome Welfare Club was discussed.

On October 16th, 2016, a get together wasorganized where people from far off places suchas Gandhidham, Vadodara also participated. DrNina Vaidya (a pediatrician and a parent fromNavasari) gave a talk to the parents andgrandparents which was followed by a questionand answer session. Various health and familyissues were addressed. Grandparents wereencouraged to participate and counseled toempower their families.

As normal schools are reluctant in enrollingthese kids, the issue of schooling was of primeimportance. Various options were discussed tocome up with a solution. A group was createdsoon after so that the parents could get guidancefrom the experts.

A team from Chennai comprising of Dr. RekhaRamachandran (President of Down SyndromeFederation of India), Mrs. Sandhya Krishnamurthy(Parent, special educator and counselor, specialOlympics), Mrs. Hemamalini (Psychologist andspecial educator), and Mrs. Shrilakshmi(Physiotherapist), visited Ahmedabad and conducteda two day workshop in collaboration with the DownSyndrome Welfare Club and Department of Zoologyon November 11th and 12th, 2016. Dr. Krati Shah(Clinical Geneticist, Vadodara) and Dr. Neha Mehta(Pediatric physiotherapist) were also part of thisexpert team and evaluated and counseled a totalof 41 families. Parents were individually counseled;each child was assessed and given a plan for thenext few months. Corrective measures, exercises,tip and guidance was provided for each child,ranging in age from a few months to 21 years. An

open session was held where Dr Sonal Doctor, aspeech therapist from B.M. Institute of Mentalhealth, Ahmedabad and Dr Rekha Ramachandranaddressed parents’ queries and motivated them tospeak up strongly for their rights.

After the overwhelming response for thisworkshop, another meeting was organized onNovember 26th, 2016. The main agenda wasphysiotherapy consultation, therapy scheduling,counseling and brainstorming for spreadingawareness. Dr. Dolly Anadkat (Motivational speakerand life coach) gave a talk on Stress managementwhile Dr. Neha Mehta spoke about the dos anddon’ts of physiotherapy.

Persistent efforts from the Department resultedin the organization of another event in order toexpand the consciousness around Down syndrome.This seminar was organized on December 11th,2016 and aimed at imparting legal knowledge to allparents with affected children. Around 30 familieshad attended the seminar in which the chiefspeaker, Mr. Niranjan Kumar Jain (Social workersince the year 2000), addressed the Central andState government schemes for healthcare andeducation with reference to persons with intellectualchallenges. The main topic of the event was thesocial and economic justice that children withspecial needs are entitled to. These were explainedin detail to the parents for them to claim their rights.They were also given an opportunity to discuss anydoubts or queries that they harbored.

The student volunteers of the Departmentbenefitted greatly from these events. This gavethem an opportunity to sensitize themselves andwork together as a team. Their successful effortsresulted in a memorable journey. The parents andfamily members are seen smiling as they walk outof the room with their hearts filled with joy aftersuch sessions and programs. It is heartwarmingto see the lit up faces of the children and theirindulgent parents.

Staff and students of Gujarat University on Saturday, 15th October 2016. The programme wasinaugurated by our Honourable Vice Chancellor, Dr. M. N. Patel. Prof. Savita Gandhi, Chairperson WDC,welcomed the President of the function, Honourable Vice Chancellor, Dr. M. N. Patel and the InvitedSpeaker Ms. MeghaAntani. Speaking on the occasion,Honourable Vice Chancellor, Dr. M.N. Patelreflected on his personal experiences and affirmed that managing time is absolutely essential forsuccess. He congratulated the organizers for organizing the seminar and blessed the participants. Ms.MeghaAntani conducted the session with the help of an interactive presentation and a hands-on- learningusing a cards game. Ms. Megha was very effectively able to communicate the point to all the participantsthat managing time should be a top priority in everyone’s daily routines and life in general. All participantsreceived a certificate of participation. WDC had also organized three competitions namely, postermaking, short story writing and short movie making on the theme TIME for the students of the Universityand many enthusiastic participants have submitted their entries. The winners would receive certificatesand prizes during the Annual function of WDC.

The first technical session was deliveredby Dr. Prakash Koringa, Professor, AnandAgriculturalUniversity on Next generationsequencing. He also shared projects works andresults, which were conducted under his guidance.Dr.Koringa motivated the participants to answerhis questions during the lecture and gave awaygifts to those who gave correct answers.
