Heshows his clean bop chops on “The Tale” and mid-tempo-ed “NightlyNews” while hegets a bit of latingrooving on“GravitationalPull.” He brings ina fusion mixsuccessfully on“How Two Live”and the rocking“Lonely Planetas Bencid bearsdown, whilegentle cymbalwork andgraceful pianomusings workwell withAlbare’sacoustic guitar on “Royal Beach.” Funky andchunky chords are felt on the title track while hislyricism wins the day on “Round Trip.” A nice prismof sounds from the strings.
Brad Myers brings his electric guitar to lead a teamwith Chris Barrick/vib, Ben Walkenhauer/ts, PeterGemus/b and Tom Buckley/dr for some bouncing

He shows his allegiance toall things Monk by delivering a joyful “Evidence”that snaps like dry twigs and then with his own“Spherical” which has a clever military beatprovided by Buckley. Extra horns by DominicMarino/b and Michael Mavridoglou/tp creat apastoral journey on “Rule Of Threes” whileMavridoglou’s horn fills in with the sly and latingroove on “There Is A Space For Us.” Myershimself is gracious and meloidic on the gentle “TheBig Push” and subtle and suave on “Bentley’sBlues” Walkenhauer’s tenor and Barrick’s vibescreate a nice hip atmosphere that swings well onthe upscale “Invitation” and easily grooving “SunsetIn Curacao.” Very impressive team effort.
Guitarist Hugo Fernandez defers to tenor andsoprano saxist Ariel Bringuez quite a bit here on aquartet session along with the energetic rhythmteam of Antonio Miguel/b and Antonio Sanchez/dr.There’s a bit of a tribal war dance drum beat on asthe team sounds a bit indie-rockish on“Reconciliation” and there’s a rockish beat on“Sublime” that features Bringuez’s soprano.Restless undercurrents provide a stimulation forFernandez’s clean solo on “Metro” and some richflavors also come out on the Indian-directed“Grounds” that has Bringuez and Fernandezsounding like their taking you to Central Asia.Complex lines mix with charging rhythms on“Unbalanced” as the tenor and guitar vie for controlof the reigns, while the closing “Yap” shows thesublime side of the two leads with plaintive pickingby Fernandez. Intelligent session.
Then, you’ve got guitarist John Tropea going frommodern fusion as on Part 1 of the title track tosounding like the rhythm guitarist for James

Brown’s Fabulous Flames on this hip shakingsession. He teams up with a smoking sax sectionthat riffs until the sun rises on “Soul Surfin” and thefunky “NYC Direct.” 70’s Philly soul has somesnappy saxes on “7 Avenue South” while aMemphis stew is simmering on “Side By Two.” Atouch of Benson burns on the disco-ish “BackEye’d G’s” and the second part of the title track hassome hip vocals by James Williams.
