Guideline foronline applicationto COMMAS program

COMMAS M.Sc.study program

Introduction

Application to the COMMAS program is performed electronically via the C@MPUS portal –https://campus.uni-stuttgart.de/. Electronic copies of all the required documents need to be uploaded to theportal during the application process. Please do not sent us any documents via email or by post. Also note thatthe langauge score reports only have to be uploaded to the portal by yourself (neither by ETS nor by IELTS testcenter) unless it is explicitly asked. Till the application deadline, we try to check the applications and inform theapplicant if any document is missing. Therefore, please check your C@MPUS account regularly in order to beinformed about the status of your application and update your application till deadline.

After the deadline we start with evaluating the applications. This is usually done by the COMMAS AdmissionBoard and University Administration. The final decisions are usually made till May (the date is prone to change)and all the applicants are informed via C@MPUS portal about the admissions/rejections. In case of theadmission, applicants can download the Admission Letter from the C@MPUS portal.

Required documents

You will need the following documents for your application:

Official transcripts (1 for each undergraduate and graduate institution attended)

Certified university degree certificate (if studies are completed, otherwise provisional degree certificate or astatement from the university with the expected graduation date.)

Letter of motivation (no longer than 1-2 pages)

Official or certified high-school certificate

Official or certified university entrance examination (if applicable)

CV (Curriculum Vitae)

Two recommendation letters (either from university or industry)

Country specific requirements (only for applicants from China, Iran, Mongolian People’s Republic andVietnam)

Official score reports of English proficiency tests (TOEFL or IELTS)

Documents issued in any language other than German or English must be officially translated by an accreditedtranslator into German or English. Please upload the certified copy as well as the original. You can find moredetails about these documents on the corresponding slide of this manual.In case uploading is not possible now, you can upload the documents subsequently (by 15.02. at the latest).


Access the Portal

To create an account andsent us an application, youneed to access the C@MPUSportal by the following link:https://campus.uni-stuttgart.de.

Language Setting

Note that C@MPUS portalby default will be loaded inGerman. The language canalso be changed to English

by clicking on onthe upper right corner rightnext to “Log-in”.


Registration Access

To create an applicantaccount, follow the link inthe section ’Applicants forstudy programs’


Create a New Applicant Account

Fill in required details inorder to create an account

Please enter your last nameand your first name(s)exactly as they are written inyour passport. Your name(s)cannot be changed later on!

After completing thissection, you will receive anemail containing furtherinformation to log in to theC@MPUS portal.


Start of Course

In this window, the startingyear of the applied programis displayed.

Select Wintersemester2020/21 (winter term2020/21) and click Continue togo on with your application.

Please select Type of studies→ Master programme as wellas

Degree program →Computational Mechanics ofMaterials and Structures


Select Degree Program (2/2)

Personal Data

Please check again yourpersonal data.

Here you can only chooseyour academic titles toappear before or after yourname

For example, Bachelor’stitles always appear after thename.


Correspondence Address

Please keep yourcorrespondence addressalways up ot date. TheUniversity will contact youduring your study periodaccording to this address.

During application, you needto enter a valid postaladdress you have at themoment of your application.This can be changed later on.

In case your correspondenceaddress is the same as yourhome address, please tickthis option.


Permanent Home Address

This step will only appear ifyour home address is notidentical with yourcorrespondence address


Higher Education Entrance Qualification (1/2)

A foreign higher educationentrance qualification is theformal term for your ”schoolleaving certificate” as forexample a high schooldegree. In Germany, this isyour ”Abitur”.

Generally, all therequirements that studentshave to fulfil in their homecountry in order to beadmitted to study anacademic subject at auniversity also applies inGermany.


Higher Education Entrance Qualification (2/2)

In case you have a foreignhigher education entrancequalification, please selectrespectively and fill in theboxes that appear.

In this section, you mayenter your Average Grade(GPA) according to yourtranscript. It is not necessaryto convert your grade to theGerman grading system.


Academic background (1/4)

By default, there are noentries. It is important tomake at least one entry,otherwise you can’t continuewith your application.

University/Subjects

Form of studies For moreinformation about thedifferent forms of studiesplease click on andchoose the one which fitsyour academic background.In most cases, this would beFirst Degree.

The programs are alsocollected for statisticalreasons. In case yourprogram is not included inthe select list please chooseone which is similar incontent.



Semester

In Germany the term ”WS”means winter term (fomOctober 1 to March 30) and”SS” means summer term(from April 1 to September30). If you have a differentsystem in your countryplease try to chooseaccording to the Germansystem.

If applicable please enter thenumber ofleave/internship/break termsincluded in the total durationstated.



Status

You can enter yourintermediate grade if youhave not yet received yourfinal grade for your Bachelor.Otherwise you can enteryour final grade under FinalExam.

At least one final exam ofthe academic backgroundneeds to be “passed on thewhole” or “not finished” inorder to continue with yourapplication.

Please don’t forget to clicksave and close in order to goon.


Entrance Qualification

This step will only appear ifyou selected in the previousstep that you did not finishyour Bachlor degree at themoment.


Higher Education Entrance Qualification

A foreign higher educationentrance qualification is theformal term for your ”schoolleaving certificate” as forexample a high schooldegree. In Germany, this isyour ”Abitur”.


Bachelor’s Degree Certificate

This requiement only appliesif you have alreadycompleted a degree programand received your certificate.

In case you have anotheruniversity degree, or in caseyou have more than oneuniversity degree, pleaseupload the degree certicateof the study which serves asentrance qualification forCOMMAS.

Transcript of Records

Letter of motiviation

The motiviation letter shouldbe very concise and notlonger than 1-2 pages. Ingeneral, we recommend amotiviation letter of onepage.

Please do not repeat yourresume in the motivationletter, but let us know whyyou would like to study inGermany, why you areapplying to COMMAS, whatmakes you a good candidateand how you will benefitfrom the program andfurther information that willgive us an impression aboutyour aims and person.


Certificates of Additional Degrees and Transcripts of Records

This step is optional.

Please uploade certificatesand/or transcripts of recordsfrom additionals studies anddegrees (e.g. Master’sDegree)


APS Certificate

Citizens of the People’sRepublic of China, theSocialistic Republic ofVietnam and Mongolia haveto submit an originalcertificate or confirmation ofthe APS (AkademischePrüfstelle) at the Embassy ofthe Ferderal Republic ofGermany in their homecountry.


Letters of Recommendation

Please upload your tworecommendation letterscompiled in one file.

Note that we do not haverequirements on the form ofthe recommendation letters,which can also be submittedusing the form of youruniversity. However, makesure that the both of yourrecommendation lettershave been signed by yourprofessors.


Proof of English Language Proficiency

We accept all 3 types ofTOEFL exams. Minimumrequirements are 550 forpaper-based, 213 forcomputer-based, and 79 forinternet-based exams.

The minimum requirementfor IELTS is a band score of6.0.

Please note, that all applicantsneed a report of an Englishproficiency test regardless of thelanguage of instruction of theirprevious studies.


Proof of German Language Skills

Optional: Please providecertified proofs of yourGerman proficiency in caseyou have already takenGerman classes before.

This is not a mandatoryrequirement for admission.

Before the program starts,usually in September,incoming students can attendan intensive German courseaccording to their languageskills, though it is notcompulsory.
