Creator:
Gerard Herbst, designer and teacher, was born in Dresden in 1911. He studied textile design and
gained experience in Berlin, Zurich, Prague, Paris and Munich. He came under the notice of Professor
Moholy Nagy prior to the closure of the Bauhaus by the Nazis. Herbst migrated to Australia in 1939
and during 1939-40 he worked as Display Manager and Assistant to the Advertising Manager for the
Melbourne textile manufacturer Prestige Limited. After serving in the AIF with the rank of sergeant,
1940-45, he rejoined Prestige as Art Director which position he held until 1956. The Prestige studio was
one of the first industrial design studios to be established in Australian industry.
[Prestige Limited was formed in 1922 by George Foletta to manufacture fine silken hosiery. The
company had acquired the Atlas Knitting and Spinning Mills Pty Ltd which had been established in
1920 and produced "Prestige hosiery" from 1921. Prestige Limited merged with Holeproof Hosiery
Company (Australia) Pty Ltd in 1964. Both were taken over by Pacific Dunlop in 1968. The Prestige
name was dropped in 1978/79.]
Herbst introduced printed fashion fabrics to Prestige's range. His studio invented a number of new
printing techniques including the transfer of gold leaf to fabric and 'phototex', a photographic
screenprinting process'. Prestige's participation in the International Textile Exhibition in Lille, France,
brought the company's screenprinted fabrics to European attention in 1951. Herbst also developed the
marketing and advertising used to promote Prestige products.
Young designers working for Prestige included Stanislav Ostoja-Kotowski of Poland, Sue Tandler of
Austria, Pauline Gray of England and William Salmon a recent graduate from RMIT.
Many designs were based on natural forms of the Australian environment such as driftwood, lizard
skin, seashells, rocks and leaves.
During his time at Prestige, three documentary films were produced - `Portraits in Fabric', `Language
of Design', 1950 and `Fabrics in Motion', 1951. `Language of Design' won the Cine Service Documentary
Film Award for Herbst and producer/writer Geoffrey Thompson and was shown at Lille.
Herbst had done part-time teaching at RMIT since 1951 and was appointed lecturer in charge of
industrial design at RMIT in 1960 retiring in 1976. He lectured in the USA, Italy and Mexico (1969-70),
was design consultant to the Industrial Design Council of Australia and from 1979, to Deakin
University. He has curated a number of international poster exhibitions for Australian galleries,
1984-95.

Series Title: Video, 'Portraits in Fabric'
Date Range: 1950s
Physical Characteristics: VHS videotape
Description: Videotape, VHS, 'Portraits in Fabric', Cinesound Review, Melbourne,
1950s
VHS video copy of a short newsreel on the Prestige studio made by
Cinesound Review, Melbourne. It shows Gerard Herbst at a drawing
board, studio staff at work, the phototex production process (which
combines photography with silkscreen printing) and completed
fabrics. The design process is demonstrated - miniature models are
used before any fabric is printed; designs are painted on paper; the
models are draped and photographed; if Herbst is satisfied, the
fabric goes into production. Designs shown under production are the
Miss Australia portrait, a montage of sporting personalities and gum
leaves. Completed garments are modelled featuring the Rita
Hayworth and Ali Khan, Helvetia and Horse fabrics. Also shown are
ties, scarves and handkerchiefs. Duration is 3 minutes.
