Initially developed in 2001, France’s National
Nutrition and Health Programme (PNNS)
aims to improve the health status of the
French population by addressing one of the
main determinants of health: nutrition. This
programme focuses on the consequences of
nutrition in terms of health protection and of
poor nutrition as a risk factor of common,
costly pathologies leading to death. The
PNNS has a positive approach, and gives
individuals dietary recommendations that are
simple to implement in daily life.
The PNNS has been put into practice and
many local actions have been implemented
thanks to the implication of health and edu-
cation professionals, social workers and
other professionals. Inpes offers a large
panel of tools made for the general public as
well as for professionals: guidelines, soft-
ware, poster kits… These free documents and
teaching aids are made in collaboration with
and validated by scientific experts. They have
a practical approach and will help to give you
a broad base for dialogue with your patients
and the general population.
This resource guide was designed in order to
help you inform and raise awareness within
the general population on the topic of nutri-
tion. It briefly presents the different tools
available to help you in your daily practice.
Thank you for your implication in this nutri-
tional education programme.

Several resources have been made especially for
professionals from the socio-educative sector and for
municipalities. The tools for professionals of the social
and education sectors present orientations and resources
for working on increasing awareness of nutritional
education issues, especially for young people. These tools
are completed with information documents such as
guidelines and posters. A series of tools is available to
municipalities to encourage the implementation of
activities and information on the importance of regular
physical activity. This chapter also presents the “active
cities of the PNNS” charter, with which a town pledges to
develop actions related to the promotion of healthy
nutrition.
