Colour managementCalibration of your scanner with SilverFast IT-8 calibration
IT-8 target calibration is the industry standard for calibrating inputdevices. Now SilverFast has integrated (optional) a professional toolfor calibration and for the creation of ICC profiles to be used withApple’s ColorSync 2.5 or under Windows with ICM 2.0. To order thisupgrade, contact LaserSoft Imaging.
SilverFast has made the process of IT-8 calibration very convenient –all steps are performed automatically by the software, just follow theinstructions outlined below.
➀ Position the IT-8 reference chart on your scanner bed.
Make sure that the IT-8 target is positioned straight within thenormal scan area, preferably where the scan starts. Avoid thoseareas which are reserved for scanner internal calibration. Theorientation of the target should be as shown on the left.
➁ Click “prescan” (the scanner performs a prescan).
➂ Drag the selection marquee across the IT-8 target so that:
a) the upper-left edge of the marquee aligns with the upper-left edge of the IT-8 colour patches,
b) the upper-right edge of the marquee aligns with the upper-right edge of the IT-8 colour patches,
c) the lower edge of the marquee aligns with the lower edge of the ray scale strip.
Note that the uppermost left and right patches of the gray scalestrip remain outside of the calibration selection..
➃ Now click the IT-8 calibration button .
Important! When using “IT-8 calibra-tion” please purchase IT8target and its referencedata from film maker (e.g.Kodak, Agfa, Fuji).

➄ Click on “Start” in the dialog “IT-8 Calibration” andchoose the reference data file which, came with your IT-8 target, inthe file selection dialog. Make sure to choose the right file: there isone reference file for reflective and one for transparency mode.
For example, the reflective IT-8 “Kodak Q-60 colour input Target”the file “R1199601.Q60” has to be selected.
The reference data file contains the exact spectro-photometricvalues of your IT-8 target.
➅ If the positioning of the selection marquee is correct, SilverFast willstart the calibration procedure. If the positioning is incorrect, you will be asked to repeat theselection and start the calibration again.
After the calibration has been completed you will get the message“Calibration has been successful”.
Now click the check box “Use Calibration” and leave the IT-8calibration dialog by clicking .
➆ The calibration button has now become coloured and is nolonger gray . This indicates that the calibration is now active.
If you want to switch the calibration “on” or “off” later , select ordeselect in the option dialog , under “Colour Management /Scanner ➞ Internal”, the item “Calibration”. Close the option
dialog with .
Check with your IT-8 targetmaker about the reference datafile of your IT-8 target.

The concept of optimising images When optimising scanned images, using the tools in the correctorder significantly influences the results that can be obtained andleads to the optimum output quality.
➀ Basic choice of white / black point and colour correction. The black / white points and colour correction can be set manu-ally or by using the auto-adjust function.
➁ Optimising gradationIf necessary, further individual optimising of the image withgradation curves (midtone and contrast) is possible.
➂ Selective colour correction If desired, you can correct individual colours with the selectivecolour correction. (It is also possible to use an ICC scanner profilefor applying colour correction).
➃ Size adjustment and scalingScale the image and scan frames individually in height and width.
➄ Sharpening (unsharp masking)Choose, according to type of image and scaling, the optimumsetting for Unsharp-Masking.
➅ Output format selection (e.g. Plug + Play CMYK)Select “Scan RGB” – “LAB” or “Plug + Play CMYK”. Select theappropriate separation table or ICC-profile (in case you scanCMYK) for your type of printing.

OptionsBefore you start working with SilverFast, please set important prefer-ences under the Option dialog. These preferences are automaticallyincorporated into the next scan operation.
Attention: The “default dialog” windows differs from scanner toscanner and some features are only available for certain scanners orcertain imaging software.
The following parameters are set:
General defaults• Colour model RBG or CMY
Here you can toggle between RGB- and CMY-Indication for grada-tion curves and the histogram.
• Units of measure in cm or inchSwitches the units of measure between “cm” and “inch”.
• Densitometer radiusThe area of the densitometer reading can be set to 1, 2x2 and3x3 pixels.
• Default settingHere previously defined default settings can be selected . Thesesettings must have been allocated to a name under "Settings“ inthe "Frame“ panel. With the "Apply" button the new default set-tings can be instantly applied to the currently active frame. Anynew frame will automatically have the allocated default settings.
• Gamma-gradation
This adjusts the general brightness of the image for midtone andshadow. In general, a gamma of 1.6-1.8 is recommended. Fortransparency, the gamma is normally higher than for reflective(transparency 1.8-2). Check that your monitor is set to the correctgamma in order for the tonal values to be displayed evenly. Forbest results scan a gray calibration strip and adjust your gammaaccordingly.
• Q-factorThe Q-factor is the quality factor for an image. The range is from1 to 2.5. Please refer to manual addendum (Calculating thescan resolution).

Important! Please note that some of highlightor shadow details will be lost byselecting “Levels”. Because the “auto-adjust” with“Levels” will disregard more pixels.
*AttentionThe “default dialog” windowsdiffers from scanner to scannerand some features are onlyavailable for certain scanner orcertain imaging software.
• Reopen SF after scanNormaly SilverFast (as Photoshop plugin) will be closed afterscan and has to be started again for next scan.
Auto defaults*• Auto-threshold
Determines the sensitivity (0-30) for the auto-adjust. Smaller values= more sensitive. Recommended values are 2 to 12. You can useRGB levels instead of pixel ratio when moving into the histogramby selecting “Levels”.This function is efficient if you wish to opti-mise an image by only using “auto-adjust” in order to remove basecolour like a white or a black in the scanning image.
• Highlight offset (brightest point)Minimum value for the brightest point in % (eg. 3%)
• Shadow offset (darkest point)Maximum value for the darkest point in % (eg. 98%)
• Auto-pip-factor The auto-pip-factor influences how the gradation-automatic makesan image that is too dark, brighter and an image that is too bright, darker, by means of the automatic adjustment of gradation curves.
• Automatic when ADF*Invividual image auto-adjust for each scan
