INTRODUCTION

Dear student, thank you for choosing the School of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Bologna. This guide is intended to give a comprehensive background of the School’s services and facilities, as well as the available taught courses.

We kindly ask you to take a few minutes in order to get used to the essential lexicon required for your stay in our School.

• International students: Students with European Union citizenship, students with non-EU equivalent citizenship, Italian students with foreign qualifications, students with non-EU citizenship who are resident abroad. They are officially enrolled into a full time course (Bachelor or Master) of the University of Bologna. International students are typically subjected to the same rules of Italian students.

• Exchange students: Through the participation in the Erasmus Plus programme, Overseas, international networks and projects and agreements with prestigious foreign universities, students can spend exchange periods at the University of Bologna. These students are enrolled into a course of a foreign university, and follow some course units of the University of Bologna for a limited amount of time (typically up to one year). For these students, the composition of their study plan is typically more flexible; it is always requested, though, the approval of their home university. They can choose among all the active units of the University of Bologna.

• Degree programmes: Unibo offers many degrees, from Bachelor (three year degrees) to Master (two-year degrees after the Bachleor), and also 5-year degrees. Typically the Bachelors have classes called with the T prefix (Triennale), the Masters tend to use the M prefix (for Magistrale); the 5-year degrees do not generally use prefixes for classes.

• Piano di Studi (study plan): the list of course units you are allowed to take. If you are an exchange student and you are willing to change or fill-in for the first time your study plan, you can do it through “Studenti Online”, which will be better described later.

• Ciclo (term): the period of time in which a certain class is taught within an Academic Year: in the School of Engineering and Architecture, it corresponds to one semester. Ciclo “1” means from September to December, ciclo “2” means from February to June.

For any doubt, you can contact the International Relations Office of the School. We wish you enjoy your stay at the School of Engineering and Architecture.

THE SCHOOL

The University of Bologna is organized in a multicampus structure in order to spread the diffusion of the teaching offer over the local territory and the activation of a steady research activity in many location of the Emilia Romagna region, with the intent to improve the presence and the quality of the University community life.

As part of the reorganization of Bologna University approved in 2012, the School of Engineering and Architecture has formed out of three previous Faculties: Bologna’s Engineering Faculty, the Second Faculty of Engineering at Forlì and Cesena, and the “Aldo Rossi” Faculty of Architecture at Cesena. The multiple experience and knowledge accrued by these different places of origin now converge in one new School. The School of Engineering and Architecture offers its students learning curricula resting on a solid scientific basis, with a clear leaning towards applied technology that combines the differing approaches of systems, design and analytical engineering. This covers the fields of architecture and industrial design, as well as the various fields of engineering: industrial, mechanical, ICT, environmental, civil, constructional, biomedical, aeronautical and space, chemical and biochemical, electric energy, electronic, telecommunications, automation, and management. Due to the enhanced multidisciplinary knowledge, students will develop qualities that will stand them in good professional stead: commitment, concentration, intellectual resilience, practice with group work, and a penchant for digging deep, learning properly and then delivering the fruits. The programme catalogue embraces first cycle / bachelor degree, second cycle degree / master and 2 single cycle degree / combined bachelor and master (5 years), all tailored to feedback from the professional and manufacturing world. The teaching locations are divided between Bologna, Cesena, Forlì, and Ravenna. The School also imparts a pronounced international slant to its programme catalogue: the student will be able to choose among Joint Programmes, Double Degrees and courses entirely taught in English. More information are available on the School website.

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL, CHEMICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND MATERIALS ENGINEERING – DICAM

The Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering (DICAM) was founded in June 2010 from the mutually agreed aggregation of many former departments. The main objective was bringing together, within the same scientific organization, the different competences of the Engineering Faculty of the University of Bologna, with the ambitious mission of creating and developing advanced research in the areas of civil, environmental and materials engineering: from design, construction and service of man-made structures and infrastructures, through the study and characterization of the constituent materials, to the analysis of their integration and impact on the territory. The structures are equipped with eleven specialist laboratories, which provide enormous impetus to the research in all the specific disciplines, as well as an essential element for the relevant teaching activities.

Campus of Bologna

LOCATIONS

The Bologna Campus consists of two sites: the long-standing one in Viale del Risorgimento and the more recent one in Via Terracini.

● The older complex containing laboratories, lecture rooms, and areas for students, researchers and teachers is composed by the historical buildings placed in Viale del Risorgimento 2 as well as a small detachment in the nearby Via Saragozza 8 (less than 10 minutes by foot); it has been designed in 1934 by Giuseppe Vaccaro, a famous rationalist architect;

● The Via Terracini complex is composed by a new building placed in Via Umberto Terracini 28 (Lazzaretto); The Via Umberto Terracini campus has been inaugurated on the 5th of May, 2007. It is a functional modern building containing teaching facilities for the following Degree Programmes:

2nd and 3rd year of Bachelor programmes in: 1st and 2nd year of Master programmes in:

Environmental engineering Chemical and biochemical engineering Engineering management

Environmental engineering Chemical and process engineering Engineering management

All the other courses take place in the Viale del Risorgimento and Via Saragozza complexes. Please note that this organisations is very flexible, so remember to double check your timetable online for the actual

location of your lesson (section “Online services” of this handbook).

HOW TO REACH THE DIFFERENT COMPLEXES BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT Please note that in Bologna, nearly placed bus stops can share the same name even if they are different. Always check at the bus stop if your line actually stops there.

VIALE DEL RISORGIMENTO 2 AND VIA SARAGOZZA 8

● Bus lines number 32 and 33 (so called circular lines): “Porta Saragozza” bus stop; ● Bus lines number 38 and 39 (so called peripheral circular lines): “Frassinago” or “Porta Saragozza”

bus stops; ● Bus line number 20: “Frassinago” or “Porta Saragozza” bus stops.

The dotted path below shows the footpath that links the backside entrance of “Viale del Risorgimento”

complex to the “Via Saragozza” one.

GUIDE FOR INCOMING STUDENTS - SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE 15

VIA UMBERTO TERRACINI 28

● Bus line number 35: “Rotonda Reggimento Pistoia” bus stop. Please note that during fairs and exhibitions, some buses do not transit at that stop: they are usually marked with a trailing symbol (like a “slash”) after the line number. If you are in doubt, ask the bus driver before departure;

● Bus lines number 30, 18 and 17: “Poste” bus stop. This bus stop is farther than the other one. After getting off the bus, you have to walk down Via Alberto Manzi for 10 minutes until you cross Umberto Terracini road.

If you need to go from Viale Del Risorgimento to Via Umberto Terracini, or vice versa, there is no direct line: you have to take a connection. In the next section, you will find the easiest one. Please note that other two connections are available: 38 - 35 and 20 - 18.

FROM VIALE DEL RISORGIMENTO 2 TO VIA UMBERTO TERRACINI 28

● Take the bus number 32 at the “Porta Saragozza” bus stop and get off at the “Porta Lame” or “Don Minzoni” bus stops;

● Take the bus number 35 at the “Parmeggiani” or “Don Minzoni” bus stops and get off at the “Rotonda Reggimento Pistoia” bus stop.

FROM VIA UMBERTO TERRACINI 28 TO VIALE DEL RISORGIMENTO 2

● Take the bus number 35 at the “Rotonda Reggimento Pistoia” bus stop and get off at the “at the “Parmeggiani” or “Don Minzoni” bus stops;

● Take the bus number 33 at the “Porta Lame” or “Don Minzoni” bus stops and get off at the “Porta Saragozza” bus stop.

INTER CAMPUS

ONLINE SERVICES

STUDENTI ONLINE Through Studenti Online, you can access most of the online services provided by the University. To access to the portal you have to use the Unibo email and password. As you can see, this is an interface to access almost all the online services. The most important ones are surely the Exams - Almaesami, where you can (and you have to) enroll to exams and check their dates and places, and the “Study plans”, where you can choose the course units to attend.

HOW TO CHOOSE COURSE UNITS Exchange students have the possibility to choose all course units of the multicampus structure of Bologna, so if you want to check which classes are more suitable for your career, you can first give a look at this site: http://www.unibo.it/en/teaching/course-unit-catalogue . From there you will be able to search classes by title, by professor name, or by campus. Furthermore, you will be able to access to the web page of the classes searched and look at their contents and characteristics. In particular, pay attention at the box where

Page 33: Guide for Incoming Students - School of Engineering and ... · “1” means from September to December, ciclo “2” means from February to June. For any doubt, you can contact

GUIDE FOR INCOMING STUDENTS - SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE 33

it is indicated the language of the course, since the presence of a translated title does not imply that the lessons are going to be taught in English.

Once you found an interesting course unit remember to check if it is on a cycle suitable for you (e.g.: if you want to attend a module of the first cycle but you will be here only during the second one, you won’t be able to attend it). It is possible to search for the study plan where they belongs to (look for the name of the degree program) at the following web site: http://www.eng.unibo.it/PortaleEn/Academic+programmes/Courses/default.htm. There you can search the programme of the degrees selecting name or school.

LESSON TIMETABLES

BOLOGNA Bologna campus of the School of Engineering and Architecture has its own web service for timetables, available at the following web address: http://orario.ing.unibo.it/ To check the timetable of your classes you have to select one of the degree programmes they belong to, including the correct year and cycle. Having done that, a list of checkboxes will appear where you can select the single classes. To select more classes from different degree programmes of the School of Engineering and Architecture of Bologna, will require you to click on the “Aggiungi” link and to write the original name of the course unit (usually it is in English only if the unit is taught in English) or the name of the teaching professor. The following image is an example of the service’s interface described. Remember to check your timetable often, since they changes may occur, especially during the first weeks of each cycle. The name of the lecture room will appear also on the table.
