Herm Island - May issue

Herm Island

Europa:The Postman’s Van

Page 2: Guernsey - Philatelic news

I am settling back into the office following my maternity leave and am delighted to bring you news of our May issues..

The Europa theme for this year is ‘The Postman’s Van’. In this issue we have illustrated the wide variety of makes and models of vans used across a range of countries. Expertly draw by artist Robin Carter it has proven to be a fascinating look into postal vans from years gone by.

The wonderful idyllic island of Herm, which is part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, makes up our second Guernsey issue. On this paradise island you can enjoy beautiful unspoilt beaches and a safe, clean pollution-free environment. There are no cars, no crowds and definitely no stress.

For Alderney we are celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation utilising some of the classic images taken of Her Majesty during the Coronation. Rich in pageantry and historic association, the ancient ceremony of crowning a new sovereign has taken place at Westminster Abbey in London for the last 900 years and with this issue we look back at this truly special event.

Looking forward to the summer we are commemorating the 50th anniversary of the visit to Guernsey by one of the most popular bands of all time, ‘The Fab Four’ – The Beatles. We will also be celebrating the life of Beatrix Potter with some very unique modern day illustrations and the 200th anniversary of our local newspaper, the Guernsey Press.

StampEx, the biggest stamp exhibition in the UK, was yet again a brilliant show with many countries and associations showing their stamp issues and products. We were there with all our products from 2012 and our most recent issues from 2013. It was great to meet so many of our old and new customers face to face.

The winners of our StampEx prize draw are Craig Penners from Berkshire, R.C.Brett from Surrey and Peter Deeley from Farnborough.

Innovative Stamp IssueOur Marine Life stamp series, as seen in the last Philatelic News, not only features stunning aquatic photography but in this innovative issue we truly bring the images captured on the stamps to life. Using the wizardry of AR via an app developed by Lowe-Martin, the miniature sheet in our Marine Life issue reveals the Black-face Blenny (Tripterygion delaisi) in a whole new dimension. Simply download the FREE Lowe-Martin app

from the App Store and hold your device over the miniature sheet to see the Black-face Blenny in its natural habitat.

The Postman’s Van is the topic of the May 2013 Europa SetRobin Carter is a freelance illustrator based in Norwich. With over thirty years experience Robin has a varied portfolio containing projects as diverse as highly detailed technical illustrations to bright, lively images for children’s literature.

Robin has worked with Guernsey Post on a number of philatelic projects and his unique style was perfect for the latest issue in the Europa Series – the Postman’s Van.

We spoke to Robin to find out a little bit more about his artistic background, his inspirations and how he approached this latest Guernsey Post assignment:

“Becoming an illustrator was always my ambition; and when I started there was a lot of call for illustrator services; producing material for comics and encyclopedias for example, the diversity of the subjects make it interesting work.

When I received the Guernsey Post brief for the Europa Postman’s Van issue my initial thought was how I could inject some artistic appeal to the subject. In this case it helped that this was a ‘Europa’ issue, so we could represent the countries and their different vehicles with the environments in which they would appear.

The benefit of books and computer search engines enabled me to research the vans and the scenes, some of which were actually taken from holiday photos! This initial research can often take longer than painting the illustration as it’s incredibly important to find the right images to make a good composition for the stamp.

Considering the diverse places where the vans would deliver their mail also helped to conjure up possible scenes; for example one stamp shows a Morris van in the Lake District.

It is always interesting working on stamps as the diminutive size can sometimes present issues; it is important to carefully consider how the various ‘furniture’ of monetary value, the Queen’s head and caption will fit.

I’m delighted with the finished materials and hope that philatelic fans will find they provide an exciting and collectable series.”

For many hundreds

of years the crowning of a new sovereign has taken place at Westminster Abbey

but, before the Abbey was built, coronations were carried out in other places such as Oxford and Bath.

Before the Queen’s Coronation in 1953, Westminster Abbey was closed for five months in order to undergo a transformation for the ceremony. One of the key changes was the addition of the annexe at the west end of Westminster Abbey. This provided

the necessary space for the processions to form and disperse unseen by the crowds.

Queen Elizabeth II was the 39th Sovereign to be crowned at Westminster Abbey. She is also

the sixth Queen to have been crowned at the Abbey in her own right.

Responsibility for organising the Coronation is that of The Earl Marshal. Since 1386 the position of Earl Marshal has been undertaken by The Duke of Norfolk; the sixteenth Duke of Norfolk was responsible for The Queen’s Coronation.

The Queen’s Coronation dress was made of white satin embroidered with the emblems of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

Made by Norman

Hartnell, the dress featured short sleeves and a full, flaring skirt, whilst the neckline was cut square over the shoulders, before curving into a heart-shaped centre. The dress’s beautiful embroidery in gold and silver thread and pastel-coloured silks was covered with seed pearls and crystals creating a lattice-work effect.

Prince Charles made history when he became the first child to witness his mother’s coronation as Sovereign. He received a hand-painted children’s invitation to the Coronation.

8,251 guests attended the Coronation Ceremony and 129 nations and territories were officially represented at the Coronation service.

The 1953 Coronation service was the first service to be televised. Over 20 million people in Britain watched the ceremony on TV and 11 million listened on the radio (the population of Britain was then just over 36 million.)

The Queen’s return to Buckingham Palace was designed so that the procession could be seen by as many people as possible. The 7.2 kilometre route took the 16,000 participants two hours to complete.

QuEEn’S COrOnATIOn We are delighted to

commemorate the 60th anniversary of The Queen’s

Coronation in June 1953 with a set of stamps depicting

events from that very special occasion. Here are some interesting facts about

coronations, and the day itself…

The Gift ShopA stop off at the Gift Shop tops and tails every summer trip to Herm, and in wintertime it is traditional for the Trident to ferry Christmas shoppers to this tiny Aladdins cave.

After what seems like a lifetime of rain and cold, we are seeing the first stirrings of spring in the island and when the sun comes out in Guernsey, so do we. It won’t take many more blue skies for us to be scooting across the Little Russell on pleasure boats and ferries to fall back under the spell of our beloved Herm.

We have been enchanted with our sister isle since it was bought by the States of Guernsey after the war for us to enjoy, and we return year after year to walk its spectacular cliff paths, seal watch, sleep under canvas, sit on the glorious sands of Shell Beach or enjoy a drink at the legendary Mermaid Tavern.

Our latest stamps depict some of our favourite spots and remind us why we love the island so much. But it is not just Bailiwick residents who flock to Herm’s shores - visitors come from all

over the world to step back in time and enjoy a brief respite from the rigours of life in the twenty-first century.

As the staff and families who make up the small population ready themselves for the new season, we spoke to the island’s Director of Hospitality Jonathan Watson about our stamp issue:

“We are delighted with the Herm edition stamps, which capture the island perfectly. They convey the warmth of welcome, the outstanding natural beauty and the sense of relaxation that epitomise Herm. Spring is a wonderful time for us as we look forward to welcoming our visitors and these images help to conjure up the summer ahead. They will remind those in Guernsey of the beautiful island just three miles away and, further afield, the stamps will introduce us to new audiences who have not yet had the pleasure of a visit to Herm.”
