The results of a study conducted between 2011-2012 on traditional healers, menand women, in the Parma district (Emilia Romagna Region) both in the Appenninearea both in the plain, as well as in the urban area of Parma are reported below.The inquiry concerns the range of illnesses which draw attention, the articulationand the heterogeneity of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (especially the“segnatura”), the modality of their “initiation”, the place and the meaning throughwhich curative activity takes place in the cycle of life. In addition, the patients ofthese types of traditional healers are taken into account, especially in order toidentify their motivation, ideological frame of mind that conducts them towards thisresource (exclusively or in combination with the biomedical treatment), as well astheir subjective assessment of the consequent efficacy. On the whole emerges a kindof persistent, even if heterogeneous, endurance for this kind of practice not limiting it to solely marginalized areas and social classes.Keywords: traditional healers, segnatura, Parma district, traditional medicine
