choose to opt out more than an average of 56 hours ) You should tell the Trust ( and sign a form ) if you wish to opt out

You will receive an email with details of how to complete your monitoring

Support is provided by Trainee Doctor Support Team

Happens twice a year

Do not stay longer than your approved hours of work

Any extra hours must be approved prior

• Day types are as below:

– Standard

– Full Shift

– Enter the start of work time

– Enter the end of work time

– If 24 hour on call then enter for example start 9:00 and end 9:00

• Rest periods

– Only enter if you are working off site – on call from home.

– Not Natural Break.

– Generally full shift/standard day will not include rest

• Keep the box ticked if you are working on site

• Untick the box if you are working from home (i.e. on call)

Natural Break - NB

• If you have been able to get a 30 minutes break approximately every 4 hours then tick the box

– Standard 8 hour day should have 1

– Long full shift 12 hour should have 2

• This is only used for on-call shifts

– Enter the episodes when working out of hours

• You do not have to enter any notes but it is sensible to do so. – This helps to explain why

you are unable to get natural breaks or why you are working over hours

– As it can be difficult to remember if you are questioned weeks and may be months later

• Click Save Notes

Data Entry Ensure the Rota Template reflects your hours of work

If you work additional hours in agreement with your Rota Coordinator

and are paid separately by the Division Do Not Enter these hours onto your diary card

If you work outside your Rota Template – Provide A Narrative

The monitoring team will then investigate the circumstances

If you work extra hours ‘out of interest’ and without the knowledge of the Division this will be challenged

If there are any issues with your rota template – please raise it to your Division or the Trainee Doctor Support Team

Report Regular or Significant Issues that deviate from work schedule

Hours / Rest / Supervision OR Education Discussion with CS/ES

Get TOIL or Payment if appropriate

Provide evidence to improve working hours and/or Educational content of

your post

Reported within 7 days (consideration for payment), 14 days (consideration

Swift Resolution to exceptions raised locally

Work Schedule Review (can go to Level 3)

New Role to support the 2016 Junior Doctor Contract Terms and Conditions

Ensure the hours you work are safe for you and your patients.

Supports a system that addresses issues of overworking / poor training and poor supervision in a local, responsive and timely manner

GOSW Act as the champion of safe working hours

Receive your exception reports and record and monitor compliance

against your terms and conditions.

Escalate issues to the relevant executive director, or equivalent for decision and action.

Intervene to reduce any identified risks to you or your patients’ safety.

Undertake a work schedule review where there are regular or persistent breaches in safe working hours

Distribute monies received as a consequence of financial penalties, to improve your training and service experience
