What is Guar??

Guar or cluster bean is a leguminous plant whose chemical name is Cyamopsistetragonolobus, grown as a fodder crop and used for the gum obtained from itsseeds. Guar leaves can be used like spinach and the pods are prepared likesalad or vegetables. Its beans are very nutritious.

A gum obtained from the ground endosperm (a tissue produced inside theseeds) of guar seeds, used as a thickening, stabilizing, or emulsifying agent infoods, pharmaceuticals, and industrial products.

Guar Gum is used in various Industrial applications:

a) Textile industry - sizing, finishing and printing.b) Paper industry - Improved sheet formation, folding and denser surface for printing.c) Explosives industry - As waterproofing agent mixed with ammonium nitrate,

nitroglycerin, etc.d) Cosmetics and toiletries industries - Used as a thickener in toothpastes, conditioner in

shampoos.e) Medical institutions, especially nursing homes - used to thicken liquids and foods for

patients with dysphagia.
