System Description RACS IIIThe technical management system(RACS III) is used to monitor, andperform regular control of each in-dividual radio and the complete ra-dio system. The system is based onEthernetconnectionstothedifferentradiosviaanexistingLAN/WANwhereUDP multicast and point-to-pointmessagesareallowedtoflowthroughtheLAN/WANbetweentheradiositesandthecomputer(s).

Onecomputerplacedinacentrallo-cationisusedasthemainserverandisusedforloggingeventsandtokeephistorical data for the radios. Thiscomputer will run the server versionof the RACS III software. The servercomputerwillbeabletoshowsystemstatus for each radio, each site andthecompletesystem,aswellasset-tingvariousparametersoneach ra-dio.Othercomputerswillruntheclientversionofthesoftwareandwillbeabletodothesametasksastheserver,butneedanIPconnectiontotheservertoshowhistoricaldatafortheradios.Theuserlevelisdefinedbypasswordsandisusedtodifferbetweenthevarioustaskstheusersareallowedtoperform.

Anexamplehardwareconfigurationwithonly2sitesisshowninFigure16.Theaddressingschemeofthesystemisba-sedonusingClass-CIPnetworksforallradiosandlocalcontrollers.EachradiomustbeassignedauniqueIPaddress,whichisdefinedduringinstallation.Inadditionaradiogroup(site)mustbeassignedacommonmulticastaddresswhereallmessagesfromtheradioaresent.Thismulticastaddressisusedtoseparatethedifferentsitesfromeachotheronthemanagementsystem.

Allrouters inthesystemmustbeenabledformulticasttraffic;usuallythiscaneasilybeaccomplishedwithnewerCiscorouters.

ThePC’sshowninthediagramaretheworkstationsthatallowmonitoringandcontroloftheradios.Eachworkstationmustbeconfiguredtoreceivemessagesonthemulticastaddressesdefinedandwillautomaticallydetectall theradiosonaspecificsite.
