GSSC NEWSSummer 2020 - News & Program Information from Girl Scouts of Suffolk County

Dear Friends,

During this unprecedented time of COVID-19, we know that our girls need Girl Scouts more than ever. And so, we are striving to bring girls the Girl Scout experience in new and innovative ways through virtual summer camp progammimg, virtual recruiting and much more.

Our priority has always been, and will continue to be, the safety and well-being of our Girl Scouts and volunteers. We will maintain the strictest adherence to safety protocols as issued by New York State, Suffolk County and Girl Scouts of the USA. We will continue to keep you all informed regarding office openings and changes via our website, on Facebook, and through email.

Our Girl Scouts have never stopped helping others in times of need, and this pandemic is no exception. In spite of the challenges, girls have continued to serve others through donations of Girl Scout cookies, face masks and supplies to essential workers and rest homes, as well as through donations of non-perishable food items.

Our girls and their dedication to service inspire us every day. We look forward to working with and supporting them in their endeavors as we all adjust to the new normal together.

Sincerely,

Families throughout Suffolk County are struggling financially and we

need your help to ensure that every girl in our Council can continue to

participate in Girl Scouts.

Please support the Emergency Scholarship Fund.

Attention Troop LeadersRenew When You’re Ready. As life changes, Girl Scouts will be here when you and your girls need us the most.

During these challenging times, the Girl Scout experience you know and love is still happening. Right now, from home and online, for as long as it’s needed, you and your girls can keep the Girl Scout experience going while staying connected to each other and Girl Scouts across the country.

With the NEW Girl Scouts at Home, and GSSC’s Virtual Programs, your girls can earn badges through online activities and participate in live, virtual events and safe service projects that keep them engaged and inspired. New activities and resources will be added regularly.

We know volunteering isn’t always easy, especially in times like these, but your dedication makes all the difference in the world to the girls you serve. So whenever you’re ready, no matter when that is, we’re here for you.

Each girl gets a FREE Lemon-Up 2020-2021 Renewal Patch when she renews by September 30. PLUS, each troop gets a 10% Discount Coupon to the GS Shoppe when it has 100% troop renewal.

Congratulations to GSSC’s Past Presidents ScholarsThe Past Presidents Scholarship Fund was established by the GSSC Board of Directors in 1988 and awards educational scholarships to outstanding Ambassador Girl Scouts in the following categories: Academic Achievement, Community Service, Girl Scouting and Personal Challenge.

Girl Scouts Stands Against Racism and Pledges to Work

for a Just Society for AllWe need to make that clear. Racism goes against the values of Girl Scouts, and although we have acted to counter racism throughout our history, we know we have enormous work ahead of us to build a truly anti-racist organization.

We are prioritizing these efforts, both on an individual level and within every aspect of Girl Scouting. Girl Scouts of the USA and all 111 Girl Scout councils will engage in challenging discussions, center voices we haven’t listened to in the past, act with integrity, and learn from any missteps. We pledge never to stop working to create the just and equitable world that every girl, and all of us, deserve.

Plastic Pledge: Girl Scouts Emma and Audrey of Troop 4000, supported GS of NE Texas Troop’s 7802 Anti-Plastic Pledge Bronze Award. The girls watched the troop’s video, took the plastic pledge and shared their video on social media.

Although the booth sale season was interrupted by COVID-19, girls still found ways to meet their goals. Virtual booth sales hosted on social media gave girls a way to stay safe, achieve their goals and help others in the community.

PLUS, our girls helped send more than 42,000 boxes of cookies to essential workers and hometown heroes!

Seventy-one girls from GSSC earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, Girl Scouts’ highest honor, in 2020. The Gold Award is earned through completion of a project that meets an expressed need in the community.

A Gold Award Girl Scout is a community leader whose accomplishments set her apart from the rest. The organizational skills, leadership skills, and sense of community and commitment that come from “going for the gold” set the foundation for a lifetime of active citizenship.

We look forward to celebrating in-person with our Gold Award Girl Scouts in January 2021.
