All items collected that night will be donated to Full Circle Thrift Shop, a non-profit in Eliot, ME that helps allevi-ate the stresses of daily financial obligations — like utility bills, food, transportation, and hous-ing expenses — for individuals and families living with cancer.

NH is making big changes to one of its most iconic exhibits, The Yellow Submarine, and is throw-ing an adults-only party to cel-ebrate this event. The museum’s first-ever September Shebang will be held at the museum on Saturday, September 20 from 7 to 10 p.m. and will feature music by ‘The Spectras’ – together for their very last performance.

At its 30th birthday last year, the museum made a promise to invest in an upgrade of The Yellow Submarine, an exhibit beloved by several generations of visitors. Chil-dren will now be able to use a new, interactive dive simulator with 3D technology and enjoy original artwork depicting the underwater environment of Cashes Ledge in the Gulf of Maine, creating the experience of piloting the Sub.

What’s Smarter — Paying Off Debts or Investing?

The power of local. Giving

1.800.339.6573 • kennebunksavings.com

Relationships come in all shapes and sizes. Whether through a donation to man’s best friend or volunteer work, giving back is just what we do. And that’s led to many happy friendships.

What Lucy taught us about giving back.

It probably doesn’t happen as much as you’d

like, but from time to time, you have some extra dispos-able income. When this hap-pens, how should you use the funds? Assuming you have adequate emergency sav-ings — typically, three to six months’ worth of living ex-penses — should you pay off debts, or fund your IRA or another investment account?

There’s no one “correct” answer — and the priority of these options may change, depending on your financial goals. However, your first step may be to consider what type of debt you’re thinking of paying down with your extra money. For example, if you have a consumer loan that charges a high rate of interest — and you can’t deduct the interest payments from your taxes — you might conclude that it’s a good idea to get rid of this loan as quickly as pos-sible.

Still, if the loan is rela-tively small, and the payments aren’t really impinging on your monthly cash flow that much, you might want to consider put-ting any extra money you have into an investment that has the potential to offer longer-term benefits. For instance, you might decide to fully fund your IRA for the year before tackling minor debts. (In 2014, you can contribute up to $5,500 to a tra-ditional or Roth IRA, or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older.)

When it comes to making extra mortgage payments, how-ever, the picture is more compli-cated. In the first place, mort-gage interest is typically tax de-ductible, which makes your loan less “expensive.” Even beyond the issue of deductibility, you may instinctively feel that it’s best to whittle away your mort-gage and build as much equity as possible in your home. But is that always a smart move?

Increasing your home equity is a goal of many hom-

eowners — after all, the more equity you have in your home, the more cash you’ll get when you sell it. Yet, if your home’s value rises — which, admitted-ly, doesn’t always happen — you will still, in effect, be building equity without having to divert funds that could be placed else-where, such as in an investment. In this situation, it’s important to weigh your options. Do you want to lower your mortgage debts and possibly save on cu-mulative interest expenses? Or would you be better served to invest that money for potential growth or interest payments?

Here’s an additional con-sideration: If you tied up most of your money in home equity, you may well lose some flex-ibility and liquidity. If you were to fall ill or lose your job, could you get money out of your home if your emergency sav-ings fund fell short? Possibly, in the form of a home equity line of credit or a second mortgage, but if you were not bringing

in any income, a bank might not even approve such a loan — no matter how much equity you have in your house. You may more easily be able to sell stocks, bonds or other invest-ment vehicles to gain access to needed cash.

Getting some extra money once in a while is a nice problem to have. Still, you won’t want to waste the opportunity — so, when choosing to pay down debts or put the money into in-vestments, think carefully.

Hurrie. Continuing, Hurrie stated, “They do not wear fa-tigues, they don’t have veterans caps so we don’t know who they are, and they suffer everyday living without their loved ones. They are paying the sacrifice for our freedom as well, and this event is about them mostly so they can know we are grateful for their sacrifice as well as their heroes.”

A stay-at-home mother of two twin six-year-old boys, Hurrie found inspiration to orga-nize the New Hampshire event after participating in a similar event in Maine, “I ran Maine’s ‘Run For The Fallen’ about five years ago and it was life changing and it really inspired me. It made me so grateful for raising my kids in a free country and living the way we do. We are just so lucky that I couldn’t wait to come back to New Hampshire and do ours. I found out we didn’t have one. I figured I am a stay-at-home-mom and had some free time. I got some friends and we have a tremendous board and we all got together and did it.”

An estimated 1000, run-ners, Gold Star family members, and volunteers, participated in the 4th Annual Run For The Fallen. It is an event that has seen approximately 500% growth since its inception. “We have had huge growth,” said Hurrie. “I think the first year

Dear Computer Lady, I wish to download and

store video tutorials from you-tube and others. How can I do this? Please try to help me out, Robert

Dear Robert,The only way to do this is

to get a program that will allow you to download videos. One of the more popular programs that will allow you to do this is Real Player at www.real.com. Once you have installed Real Player, every video that can be down-loaded will have a small menu pop up with options for saving the video. Perhaps others can share what they use in the com-ments section below. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,Is it safe or feasible, to delete

the D files after being copied onto a disk? Thanks, Teddy

Dear Teddy,You didn’t mention what

was on your D: drive, so I can only guess. Most computer manufacturers put the recovery files on the D: drive (which is actually just a section of the one hard drive in the computer). You would need to use those recovery files in the event you need to set your computer back to factory condition. If you just copy those files to a disk, the recovery pro-gram won’t really work, how-ever, there is another way. Most computers come with a program that allows you to create a set of

recovery disks or usb recovery media. These programs usually only run once, so that you can only create one set of disks or media. I usually find this pro-gram by clicking on, “Start” and then searching for, “Recovery”.Once you have created your re-covery media, then you can store them in a safe place, and you will be free to delete the files on D: if you wish. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,I used to be able to burn

CDs using iTunes. However, I updated my iTunes awhile back and now whenever I try to burn a disc, I get a message telling me that if I want to burn items on the disc, to select the playlist that contains the items and then choose File > Burn Playlist to Disc. The only problem is, on the

new iTunes program there is no “File” option. At least not that I can see. Thank you so much. Retha

Dear Retha,iTunes seems to be better at

updating the program than up-dating the directions or help file. However, I do have an answer for you to help with burning your playlist to a CD. Just right-click on the name of your playlist and in the context menu, click on “Burn playlist to disk”. You don’t even need to find the file menu. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,Can you give me some

keyboard shortcuts for internet explorer on windows 8? I am having a bad time trying to ma-neuver around when I am on IE.

I’ve had Windows XP and my laptop has Windows 7 and I can see the menu and address bars but on Windows 8, I can’t view these, especially the menu and toolbars. Thanks, Kathy

Dear Kathy,It sounds like you are using

the IE app on the start screen with all the squares instead of the old Internet Explorer which can be found on the desktop. Click on “Desktop” first, then click on the Internet Explorer button on the taskbar. This will

open the old version of IE which has the toolbars and address bar. If you are already using that ver-sion of IE, and the toolbars are hidden, try tapping the, “Alt” key on your keyboard to display the menu bar. Elizabeth

Cocheco Valley Humane Society

DOVER -Jamaica came to the shel-

ter as a stray. She is looking for a medium energy home with an owner who has lots of time to play with her. She can be nervous with handling, so would do best in a home with older kids (12 and up). She has done well with the cats she has met at the shelter and may be okay with a canine friend in her new home as long as they meet first. Her ideal owner will work with her on her leash walk-ing and basic obedience and will help build her self-confidence. Age: 1-1/2 years; Sex: Spayed Female; Breed: Boxer mix.

For more information, con-tact Cocheco Valley Humane Society at 262 County Farm Road in Dover, 603-749-5322, or www.cvhsonline.org.

SOMERSWORTH -The Greater Somersworth

Chamber of Commerce has an-nounced that it will hold two public information sessions for anyone interested in learning about its annual tour of China that is scheduled to depart on March 27, 2015. In the past five years, the Chamber has sent more than 300 local travelers on this adventurous journey to China.

The all-inclusive price for the journey is $2,499 per person, based on double occupancy and includes round-trip bus transpor-tation from Portsmouth to JFK Airport in New York; round-trip international and domestic air-fare, taxes included; 5-star and

4-star hotels; three full meals each day; English-speaking tour guides; and admission tickets to all the scheduled tourist at-tractions. Tours include Beijing, Shanghai, the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, Tian en Mien Square, a tea plantation, silk factory, and much more.

There will be two public in-formation sessions held: one on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. and the other on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. Both info sessions will be held in the Somersworth City Hall. To attend, please sign up at 603-692-7175 or [email protected]. Download the detailed brochure at www.somersworthchamber.com.

RYE -The Seacoast Science

Center will hold its 12th annual BioBlitz on Saturday, September 20 from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. BioBlitz is a daylong species scavenger hunt of Odiorne Point State Park, where the families explore along-side scientists and field natural-ists to find and record data on as many different species in the Park as possible in one day.

BioBlitz offers exciting op-portunities for all ages to gain knowledge and skill in their fa-vorite area of nature. Exploration teams will be birding, searching for insects, snakes and amphib-ians, exploring the freshwater pond and salt marsh, tracking mammals, identifying plants and seaweeds, tide pooling and more. You can sign up to participate in all or part of the day.

BioBlitz is a great way to excite children about science and a rare opportunity to meet many passionate biologists working to-gether. Odiorne’s 135 acres and seven distinctly different habitats make it a unique and fascinating place to explore and learn.

If you are not up for scour-ing the park, there is still plenty to explore in the Center’s Gregg

Interactive Learning Studio. There, you will see samples of species collected by naturalists and learn about the identification process.

Between 1 and 4 p.m., you can do your part in celebration of International Coastal Clean-up Day and join Get it Going and the Blue Ocean Society for a Beach Clean Up. Participants will be entered to win raffles prizes donated by local business.

Since the first BioBlitz in 2003, the total number of species identified in Odiorne tops 2,062. Last year, over 280 participants found 684 species, with 47 spe-cies being new to our list! This extremely valuable catalog serves as a snapshot of the biodiversity of flora and fauna in the region. The knowledge gained during BioBlitz has provided multiple opportunities to educate school children, families and groups.

To register, visit www.sea-coastsciencecenter.org/events. The event is free for members of the Seacoast Science Center; $7 for non-members; $20 for non-member families (up to 6 people). For details, contact Sarah at 603-436-8043, ext. 20 or [email protected].

Library Newstown Dover TIF District.

A feasibility study initi-ated by the City Council in 2013 identified a TIF district as a viable method to help fund and stimulate economic devel-opment in downtown Dover. The feasibility study was fol-lowed by an extensive effort to seek consensus from property owners and residents, which re-sulted in the City Council estab-lishing the Downtown Dover TIF District in March 2014.

The advisory board is ex-pected to meet quarterly, or at the request of the mayor or city manager, and will review the policies, procedures, con-struction and administration required to operate a success-ful TIF district in downtown Dover, and will advise elected and appointed City officials. The City Council is currently looking to fill four citizen po-sitions: two property owners within the established TIF dis-trict and two citizens who do not own property within or ad-jacent to the TIF district.

The Downtown Dover TIF District consists of prop-erty north of St. Thomas Street and Williams Street; south of Sixth Street; west of Chestnut Street, and Cocheco and River streets; and east of Main Street.

Individuals interested in volun-teering for the advisory board are encouraged to view the Downtown Dover TIF District map located on the City’s offi-cial website via the “Planning and Community Development” page.

Interested individuals are encouraged to submit an ap-plication for City Council con-sideration. Applications can be picked and submitted in person at the City Clerk’s office located in City Hall, or online by visit-ing the “Boards and Commis-sions” section of the City’s of-ficial website.

EXETER -According to Executive Di-

rector Julie Williams, 80percent of the Museum’s income is gener-ated through donations, which underscores the importance of “a robust membership.”

“We rely on donations from members, sponsors, and founda-tions to keep our doors open,” she said. “Without all of the sup-port of these great people, we could not do our work.”

Since opening for the season in May, the Museum has seen more than 1,000 visitors, including nearly 200 veterans, and increased its membership by 15percent to a record 200 mem-bers. As a means to celebrate “a strong 2014” and possibly entice new members, Williams said they will host a Members Only Event on Thursday, Sept. 25. At the event, members will enjoy light refreshments, including beer and wine, and have the op-portunity to try their hand at sev-

eral activities the Museum offers through its children’s educational programming.

“We are referring to the eve-ning as ‘channeling your inner Colonial child,’” said Williams.

Planned activities include Quill Pen Writing, Craft an Herbal Sachet, and Play Colonial Children’s Games. “It’s a chance for members to see how their gen-erous support allows us to engage children of all ages in hands-on Colonial history,” she added.

Founded in 1991 in historic downtown Exeter, the private, not-for-profit American Indepen-dence Museum feature a variety of living history exhibits, and its collection includes a Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration of Independence, two rare drafts of the U.S. Constitution, and an original Purple Heart awarded by General George Washington to soldiers for bravery.

DOVER -Tom and Barbara Dunning-

ton of Dover have been selected by the Association of Rollinsford Culture and History (ARCH) as the 2014 recipients of the organi-zation’s Heritage Award for their leadership in the effort to preserve and restore the Hiram R. Roberts Grange in Rollinsford and trans-form it into the Garrison Players Arts Center.

The ARCH Heritage Award is given annually to a person who has shown long term commitment and made signifi-cant contributions to preserving the history, heritage and culture of Rollinsford and the lower Salmon Falls region. The award will be presented to the Dun-ningtons at ARCH’s annual Har-vest Celebration to be held at the Colonel Paul Wentworth House in Rollinsford on Saturday, Sep-tember 20, 2014. Tickets can be purchased by emailing [email protected] or call-ing 603-742-8581.

The Hiram R. Roberts Grange Hall is an important building in Rollinsford’s history. From colonial times, Rollinsford had a robust farming commu-nity and the local chapter of the

Order of Patrons of Husbandry, popularly known as the Grange movement, was organized in the late 1800s. Designed by promi-nent area architect Alvah Thur-ston Ramsdell, the Rollinsford Grange Hall was built in 1893 and featured a large upstairs hall with a stage at one end. For over 75 years the building served as the social, political and educational center for area farm families

According to Barbara Dun-nington, the idea for siting the Arts Center in the former grange hall was born out of a discussion that took place during a cast party held in 1976 following the group’s performance of Oklahoma. The Garrison Players had rented the grange for the party and were struck by how perfect the hall would be for a little theater. A few years later the group noticed that the old grange hall had fallen into disrepair and learned that the grange was no longer active.

After several years of ne-gotiation and work to clear the deed, the Garrison Players pur-chased the building in 1987. For the next 17 years the Dunning-tons spent most weekends at the grange along with other members of the theater group taking down

plaster, painting, sheet rocking, arranging for foundation and roof repairs, landscaping and many other tasks. Barbara Dun-nington recalls that many nights the couple would not get home until after midnight. Fundraising was also a large part of the Dun-ningtons’ work to bring the proj-ect to fruition. In addition to the structural and cosmetic work, the building needed modern plumb-ing, wiring and heating. Bringing in funds to further work on the project was a constant effort.

In 2003 the Garrison Play-ers received a grant from the NH Land and Community Invest-ment Program (LCHIP) which provided the needed funds to complete the project. In the fall of 2004 the Arts Center opened with a sold out show of the musical 1776. Tom Dunnington played the part of Benjamin Franklin, a role he continues to take on annu-ally on the steps of Dover’s City Hall each July 4.

Thanks to the leadership and countless hours of hard work put in by the Dunningtons, today the Garrison Players Arts Center serves as a wonderful community resource providing a venue for the Garrison Players shows, youth theater, musical performances and many other events.

NEWINGTON – When it comes to energy

efficiency and savings to the bottom line, LED and CFL lighting options are transform-ing homes and businesses. Gino Milne, the branch manager for Rockingham Electric Supply in Newington, has more than three decades of experience in the lighting industry and he says that with each passing day residential and commercial cus-tomers are becoming better in-formed about making electric lighting more cost efficient today and tomorrow.

“I think there has always been a consciousness in the commercial sector about saving money on their electric bills be-cause businesses are so acutely aware of their bottom-line,”

Milne said. “But we’ve come a long way as far as residential awareness because customers now know and care about saving as much as possible on their home energy consumption.”

Founded in 1951, the fam-ily-owned company has grown to nine locations in New Hamp-shire, Massachusetts, and Maine and it has been on the forefront of educating the general public and businesses about energy ef-ficiency solutions.

With the mandated shift away from incandescent light bulbs and as more evidence about cost and efficiency savings accumulates – and as the prices for CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) and LEDs (light-emit-ting diodes) stabilize – the pace of consumer and commercial

demand has accelerated dramat-ically.

Milne said a growing roster of commercial clients have seen the light. “We have a lot of suc-cess stories,” he said.

Rockingham Electric is a business partner of the Green Alliance, a union of local sus-tainable businesses promoting environmentally sound business practices and a green co-op of-fering discounted green prod-ucts and services to its consumer members.

Eric Morin, the lighting showroom manager at Rocking-ham Electric’s flagship Newing-ton branch, said consumers are also realizing that technologi-cal advances such as dimmers and sensors can have a major impact on lowering the amount of household energy use.

Morin, a Rockingham Electric employee for more than a decade, believes the level of consumer knowledge about energy efficiency and technolog-ical choices to save energy and money “is like night and day” compared to when he first start-ed. The pace of technological change is also leading to the next generation of LED and CFL sys-

tems which have reduced bright harshness and are even more energy efficient.
