Sentinel Staff ReportPORTSMOUTH –

While tourists flock to the Seacoast region to enjoy its beaches, its history and its town-and-country appeal, residents have enjoyed for nearly a quar-ter-century a lesser-known tradi-tion that celebrates the color and fragrance of early summer.

The Portsmouth Pocket Garden Tour, hosted annually by South Church of Portsmouth, is now in its 24th year, opening to visitors small horticultural gems that bloom around and behind private homes in the city.

Portsmouth’s North Mill Pond neighborhood will be the focus of this year’s Pocket Garden Tour, set 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 21, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 22.

Ticket pamphlets will pro-vide visitors with a list of ad-dresses for residences on the tour, maps to point the way to the homes, and lots of informa-tion about the gardens to be showcased. The garden tour, which takes place regardless of weather, generally takes about three hours to complete, accord-ing to the South Church website.

This year’s tour will begin

Dean Clegg, J.L. Cham-berlain Museum guide student of the Battle of Gettysburg, will host this event and welcomes audience discussion with Union re-enactors during intermission and after the film presentation.

The film will be offered in two parts on Monday, July 1, at 7 p.m. and on Tuesday, July 2, at 7 p.m. or in its entirety (262 minutes) on Wednesday, July 3, at 6 p.m. Reserve tickets by call-ing or stopping by the box office, 603-335-1992, Monday, Wednes-day and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and two hours before the show.

The Rochester Opera House is located in City Hall, 31 Wakefield St., Rochester. Tickets are $10.

at New Franklin School, 1 Franklin Drive, Portsmouth, where free parking is available and visitors can purchase tickets – $23 on tour days – or pick up those reserved in advance. A stu-dent garden at the site will serve as the tour’s starting point.

Along the tour route, hor-ticulture enthusiasts will receive entry into a varied collection of nearly a dozen gardens, includ-ing those with water views, state-ly garden sculpture, rain gar-dens, herb gardens, salt marsh restoration, vertical gardening, even mushroom gardening.

Some gardens are profes-sionally landscaped, impressive in scope, while others are small, carefully tended plots that are considered continuing works in progress by their owners.

The Pocket Garden Tour was launched as a way to raise funds for the maintenance of South Church’s own pocket garden. The current event has evolved to require the efforts of 125 volunteers.

Local musicians will per-form in several gardens on this year’s tour. A solo flutist, a jazz

guitarist and a shanty band are among the entertainers on per-formance schedule.

Area artists will also set up plein air to demonstrate their tal-ents to visitors. (courtesy photo)

ROCHESTER –Straight from Holland and

the UK to the Rochester Opera House stage come Evil Conduct and Infa Riot with Taxi Driver and NFG from Canada. “Oi! At the Opera” is a mash-up show for punk-rockers on Wednesday, June 26, at 7 p.m.

The music of Evil Con-duct is basic straight-in-your-face sing-along working class, with a distinct sound and pow-erful vocals. Formed in 1984, the band recorded a demo and played a few gigs, but called it a day in 1988.

In the early ’90s, the demos were released as two singles and the band became an “obscure legend.” After numer-ous requests by promoters in the late ’90s, Evil Conduct made a come-back and now performs in venues throughout Europe and the United States.

In 2006, Han (vocals/guitar) and Ray (drums) wel-comed new bass player Joost whose rough style makes their music “much more punchy.”

Evil Conduct’s newest album, “King of Kings,” contains 14 tracks with 12 self-penned songs and two cover versions of songs by Jimmy Cliff and Hank Wil-liams.

After two young musi-cians, 15-year-old Barry Damery (guitar) and 17-year-old Lee Wilson (vocals), became friends with the Angelic Upstarts at the North London Lordship Pub in 1980, they decided to form their own band, Infa Riot, short for In for a Riot. Lee’s 15-year-old brother, Floyd, played bass.

After playing their first gig with the Upstarts at the Lord-ship, the bands teamed up for a UK tour. Infa Riot went on to record Strength Thru Oi! Kids of the ’80s, The Winner and

their debut album “Still Out of Order.”

In 1983, after a tour with the Exploited, the band called it quits… until now. Liam Os-borne (bass) and Alex Corder-elli (drums) with original band members Lee Wilson and Barry Damery are the Infa Riot line up today.

Reserve tickets online at RochesterOperaHouse.com or call/stop by the box office. 603- 335-1992, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and two hours before the show. Ages 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

The Rochester Opera House is located in City Hall, 31 Wakefield St., Rochester. Tick-ets are $20.

‘Oi! At the Opera’ to Feature Evil ConductPulitzer Prize-Winning Historian to Discuss ‘Revolutionary Summer’PORTSMOUTH –

The Music Hall’s Writers on a New England Stage series will welcome award-winning histori-an Joseph J. Ellis as he discusses his revelatory portrait of a cre-scendo moment in American his-tory, “Revolutionary Summer: The Birth of American Indepen-dence,” on Tuesday, June 25.

The 7:30 p.m. event will in-clude an author presentation and on-stage interview with Virginia Prescott, host of New Hampshire Public Radio’s “Word of Mouth.” The series’ house band Dread-naught will play live music during the one-hour event presented at The Music Hall’s historic theater at 28 Chestnut St. in downtown Portsmouth.

The author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Founding Broth-ers” and National Book Award winner “The Sphinx,” Ellis now turns his focus to the summer of 1776 and most dramatic months of our country’s founding.

Then, the 13 colonies came

together and agreed to secede from the British Empire. At the same time, the British dispatched the largest armada ever to cross the Atlantic, which cruised off the coast of Staten Island in early July. The Continental Congress and the Continental Army were forced to make highly consequen-tial decisions in reaction to events over which they had no control.

In a seamless narrative, Ellis weaves the political and military experiences as two sides of a single story, and shows how events on one front influenced outcomes on the other.

Tickets to “Writers on a New England Stage: Joseph J. Ellis” are $13 ($11 for members of The Music Hall and New Hampshire Public Radio). Signed copies of the book are $24.30 (hardcover) when reserved in ad-vance through the purchase of a voucher through The Music Hall box office. Signed books can be purchased on the evening for the full retail price of $26.95.

DOVER –Pianist Duy Bui will per-

form Sunday, June 23, at 4 p.m. at First Parish Church, 218 Central Ave., Dover. Duy will be performing selections by Beethoven, Chopin, Bortkie-wicz, and Copland.

There is no admission but a donation of $20 is suggested. All donations will benefit the Big Brother Big Sister of the Seacoast program.

Duy Bui is a 2003 gradu-

ate of Portsmouth High School, a 2008 graduate of the Man-hattan School of Music and received a master’s degree in music education from the University of New Hampshire in 1912. He currently teaches at his private studio in Ports-mouth and continues to per-form.

His accomplishments are all the more impressive con-sidering that he is legally blind and does most of his learning

PORTSMOUTH –Noted scholar Valerie Cun-

ningham will present a lecture, “Dinah Whipple: Freed Slave, Wife of Prince and Teacher of the African Children” in the Moffatt-Ladd Warehouse on Sunday, June 23, at 4 p.m. at the Moffatt-Ladd House and Garden.

The program is presented through a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Coun-cil, and is free and open to the public. Advance registration is suggested as seating is limited. Refreshments will be provided.

For more information, or to register, call Barbara Ward or Brielly Allen at 603-430-7968, or 603-436-8221, or register via email at [email protected].

The name of Dinah’s hus-band, Prince Whipple, is known as the African man who was emancipated after accompany-ing his owner, Gen. William Whipple, to fight in the Revolu-tionary War. He was one of 20 enslaved men who petitioned the New Hampshire Legislature for their freedom in 1779.

Prince Whipple lived in the Moffatt-Ladd House where he was enslaved by William Whip-ple and his wife, Katharine Mof-fatt Whipple.

William Whipple died in 1785, but, a year and a half before his death, in March 1784, he signed manumission papers for Prince Whipple, and in 1785 Katharine Moffatt Whipple pur-chased land on High Street, ad-jacent to her house, and loaned it to Prince and Dinah Whipple, and Cuffee and Rebecca Whip-ple, who had a house moved onto the property. Dinah Chase had been enslaved up until the day she married Prince in 1781.

After Prince’s death in 1797, Dinah began a school for African children in her home on High Street. This program, pre-sented by Valerie Cunningham, describes Dinah’s world, first in New Castle as a slave, then as a freed married woman in Ports-mouth, who became a teacher and community leader.

Cunningham is locally known as the founder of Ports-mouth’s award-winning Black Heritage Trail. An independent researcher and historic preser-vationist, she was formerly the coordinator of Black Heritage Partnerships at the University of New Hampshire.

Cunningham established an African American Collection at the University of New Hamp-shire Dimond Library, including the archives of the Portsmouth

Black Heritage Trail. The collec-tion includes documents identi-fying many of the people in the Seacoast region during New Hampshire’s nearly 400 years of African American history, along with documentation of New Hampshire’s first Black church and a historic African American guest house in Kittery, Maine.

DOVER –Maple Suites will host a

seminar on Saturday, June 29, 10:30 a.m. hosted by The Al-zheimer’s Association.

“Driving: When It Is Time to Give Up the Car Keys” is a seminar especially geared to families and caregiv-ers of those who are dealing with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Ideally families should talk openly about driving soon after a diagnosis of Alzheim-

er’s. Making a decision about when it is time to stop driving can be difficult, but dealing with the issue early on can help ease the transition. This seminar will help prepare to make that im-portant decision for a loved one and ease through the transition process.

To attend the seminar, RSVP to Maple Suites at 603-742-8820. Contact Maple Suites with any questions at 603-742-8820.

DOVER –Maple Suites will host a

free pet estate planning semi-nar on Saturday, June 22, at 10:30 a.m. at 30 Holiday Drive, Dover. The seminar will be conducted by Stephen Purdy, owner of Pet Passages, and by attorney Alex Nossiff.

The seminar will focus on advance planning of your estate to cover your pet and how to preplan to memorialize your pet should something happen to you.

One in five pet owners legally outline their wishes if their animals outlive them. If you have no directive, your pet could end up in a shelter or even euthanized unless you have stipulated how you want your pet protected should your pet

outlive you.Pet Passages was founded

by Stephen Purdy when he re-alized there were no federal or state regulations or standards in place regarding pet loss ser-vices. He recognized that many pet owners sought the same level and care for their pets as they do for their human family members. Teaming with Nos-siff, they will discuss how to set up trust funds and directives for caring for your pet.

The seminar will begin at 10:30 a.m., but attendees who RSVP in advance are invited to stay for dinner at Maple Suites immediately following the seminar at 11:30 a.m. RSVP to 603-742-8820. If you have any question, call Maple Suites at 603-742-8820.

Dear Computer Lady,Is it possible to change the

formatting (bold or color) of a file name in Windows Explorer to easily differentiate between files? Linda

Dear Linda,This is not a feature that

Windows offers, however there are a couple of ways you might be able to work around this problem.

First, when a file or folder is compressed, Windows changes the file name to a blue color. Based on this feature, you could compress the files or fold-ers that you want to stand out.

You compress a file this way:

Right click on the file that you want to compress. Click on “Properties” in the context

menu. In the file properties dialog box, click on the “Ad-vanced” button. Click to place a check mark in front of “Com-press contents to save disk space.” Click the “OK” button to close the dialog box and save your changes.

Secondly, there are some file management programs that would replace Windows Ex-plorer on your computer that might allow you to change the color of certain file names. I don’t have any experience with them, so I can’t give you much more help than that. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,Do you have to have Inter-

net Explorer on your computer? I haven’t used it in a couple of years. I read my mail from aol.com. Ian

Dear Ian,You do not have to have

Internet Explorer installed on your computer, however, since it is part of Windows, it is rather difficult to get rid of.

I would suggest that you leave it installed, and just delete any shortcuts from your desk-top or toolbars.

If you want to try remov-ing IE, just follow these direc-tions:

1. Click on the “Start” button, then click on “Control Panel.”

2. In the Control Panel, click on “Programs,” then click on “Turn Windows Features on or off.”

3. Wait for the list of Win-dows features to load, then find Internet Explorer and click to remove the check mark.

4. Finally, click the “OK” button to save your changes and close the dialog box. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,I used to be able to reverse

an image but now find my print program HP F4140 or even my old Print Shop program allow me to do so.

I sent the image to a friend who reversed it for me but could not work with the image. Is it my printer or (gasp!) me? Naomi

Dear Naomi,

I don’t have enough in-formation to be able to tell you why your programs aren’t allowing you to reverse your image, or why the image your friend sent you is not working, but I can tell you how to reverse the image in a free image pro-gram.

Using the free program Irfanview at www.irfanview.com, just open your image, click on “Image” in the menu bar, then click on “Horizontal Flip.”

Now, save the image and you should be all set. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,I have been avidly read

your e-mails as soon as they come out.

How can I share my “Fa-vorites” across my computers? I have two desk systems, a laptop and a net book. Help!

Thanks, Stewart

Dear Stewart,I am not aware of a way

to share your Internet Ex-plorer favorites with different computers, however if you use Google Chrome and sign into your Google account, you can share your Chrome bookmarks across multiple computers.

Google uses a feature called Chrome Sync, which saves your personalized brows-

er features to the web and then allows you to access them from Google Chrome on any com-puter.

All you have to do is install Chrome on your computer, sign into your Google Account (you can create one if you don’t al-ready have one) and then go to your Chrome settings and go to your Advanced sync settings to choose what you want to sync. Elizabeth

Comments:Dear Computerlady, Just

a brief thank you note from an 80-plus computer user, which I came to quite late. Your an-swers to the problems that you are asked about are always clear and couched in terms that as one of the generation that did not grow up with comput-ers, were on many occasions relevant to the problems that I encountered and dug me out of a few awkward spots, so from Weston-super-Mar in Somer-set, U.K., once again, many thanks. Mike

SOMERSWORTH –About $7,600 was raised

to provide support, education and respite care for families impacted by Alzheimer’s dis-ease during The Homemakers Health Services “A Round to Remember Alzheimer’s” golf tournament held recently at The Oaks Golf Links.

“Today, it seems that nearly everyone is touched in some way by Alzheimer’s dis-ease. Either you know some-one who is suffering from this devastating disease itself or you know their caregiver or loved ones,” said René Philpott, com-munity relations director at The Homemakers. “Thanks to our major sponsor, Eastern Propane and Oil, and all of our other generous sponsors, raffle prize donors and partici-pants of this year’s “A Round to Remember Alzheimer’s,” The Homemakers will be able to continue to provide support, education and respite care for families who are overwhelmed by this disease.”

Shooting a 56 to take first

place gross honors at this year’s event was the Seacoast Redi-care team made up of Mike Nye, Bob Belmore, John Nye and Dave Sharples.

Taking first place net honors with a score of 52 was the team of Brian Gelinas, Gregg Zimmerman, Jason Short and Rich Baupre, and second place net honors went to the team that shot a 54, made up of Phil Dupont, Rick Brunelle, Doug Gilman and Scott Gilman.

Winning “Most Consis-tent/Most Persistent” honors was the team of C. Boyen Thompson, Jane Fall, Debbie Libby and Betty Werner.

Longest drive honors went to Brad Therrien in the male category and to Anne Turner in the female category, while Jerre Place made a 20-foot, 6-inch putt to win the longest put contest. Coming within 34 inches of the pin, Doug Gilman won the closest to the pin in three contest. Anne Tuner came within 3 feet of the pin in two shots to win that contest in the female category while

Gerry Lavacchia came within 3-feet, 5-inches in one shot to win the closest to the pin con-test for males. This year’s put-ting contest was won by Daniel Knowles.

Winner of the Vegas Hole sponsored by WOKQ was

Roger Galuska who won a 40-inch HDTV.
