Preparing the SVEA II for useOnce the SIM card is ready, the next step is to prepare the SVEA II for use.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS 1 Insert the SIM card into the back of the product as indicated by the image (Figure 1). Make sure the chip is facing down. Carefully insert the SIM card into the SIM card holder.

2 Activate the product by connecting the battery contact on the back of the product (Figure 2). Check that the contact is at the correct angle and then push it forwards until it is firmly in place.

3 Make sure that the antenna is properly connected at the back. (Figure 3)

Before you begin installation• Make sure you have a SIM card and related documentation from your

operator to hand.

• Check that the SIM card has not been locked with a PIN. A good way to check this is to insert the SIM card in a mobile phone. If you are not asked to enter a PIN when you switch the phone on, the card is unlocked and is ready to use in the SVEA. Otherwise you need to deactivate the PIN lock. Please consult your mobile phone manual if you are unsure of how to do this.

Positioning and mounting When using the SVEA II’s own internal antenna, the positioning of the product is important in order to ensure that it functions as well as possible. Reception can vary greatly from one location to the next because of skip zones, interference, etc. So you should not mount the unit until you have examined the reception conditions and determined the optimum location. Locations near windows are generally better than locations further inside buildings.

If you intend to use the SVEA II with an external antenna, follow the antenna placement instructions below and not those for the SVEA II itself.

The SVEA II must be prepared for use before performing the steps below. See “Section 2: Preparing the SVEA II for use” in this manual.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

1 Hold the unit/external antenna in the intended location and look at the “SIGNAL” LED on the front of the unit (Figure 4). A green light means optimum coverage and you should try to obtain this if you intend to use the SVEA II with a fax machine. A yellow light indicates a medium quality signal, which is adequate for voice calls. A red light means that there is no adequate signal.

2 Not getting a green light? Move the unit and wait around 15 seconds for the “SIGNAL” LED to update. Repeat this until you get a yellow, or preferably green, light.

3 Check that the distance between the SVEA II and the equipment it will be connected to is at least 3 metres.

Check that the SVEA II is located at least 30 cm from any person. NB If you are using an external antenna, use the safe distance for the antenna and not the product itself. See the technical specification from your antenna supplier for the recommended safe distance.

4 Once you have completed the above step and if the above conditions are met, mount the SVEA II in an upright position on the wall or other smooth, hard surface using 2 suitable screws. Measure out the distance between the pairs of screw holes (149 mm for the upper screw holes and 50 mm for the lower screw holes). Hook the product onto the screws and ensure it is well secured (Figure 5). The SVEA II is now ready to connect to your telephone equipment! See Section 5: Connecting equipment.

Connecting an external antenna If reception if below the recommended level, an external antenna is a good solution. There can be many reasons for poor reception, including the building construction, skip zones or simply being located a long distance from the nearest base station. An external antenna also allows more flexible positioning of the SVEA II, enabling it to be mounted in a server room for example.

Do not use cables longer than stipulated in the manufacturer’s instructions. This results in poor signal strength and inferior performance.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

1 Remove the SVEA II from the wall.

2 Remove the internal antenna at the back of the product by first detaching the top of the antenna from the antenna support underneath and then carefully pulling it straight out of the connector (Figure 6).

3 Connect the external antenna. The connection is a TNC(f) connection (Figure 7). Use an external adapter if the antenna has a different type of connection.

4 Fix/mount the antenna according to the antenna manufacturer’s instructions. Re-mount the SVEA II on the wall.

Connecting a telephone1. Connect the telephone to the telephone plug (connector 2)

2. Lift the handset and make sure you get the line signal.

3. Make a test call to and from SVEA II to ensure the unit is working.

Connecting a fax machine1. Connect the fax machine to the fax/modem plug (connector 3)

2. Send and receive a test fax to ensure that the SVEA II is working correctly.

TroubleshootingFollow the list below to locate possible issues. To learn more about the status like communication, battery and reception, read Chapter 7, LED-signalization.

1. Make sure all connections are properly made like power cord, RJ-11 cord between SVEA II and the fax machine and the internal antenna. The lid also has to be properly fastened or the unit will not function due to the tamper switch.

2. Make sure that the fax machine is connected to the Fax/modem connector. Read more in Chapter 5. Connecting equipment.

3. Ensure that the SIM-card is inserted correctly and that fax service is activated. Disable the PIN code lock. Read more in Chapter 1. Before you start the installation.

4. Check the GSM-reception. The LED for signal should be green to ensure the best faxing capabilities possible. The unit must be mounted in an upright position. Read more in Chapter 3. Positioning and mounting.

1. Make sure the fax machine is properly connected in SVEA II’s fax/modem connector. Read more in Chapter 5. Connecting equipment.

2. Try to call the fax number in the SVEA II from a phone. The fax should answer with it’s characteristic sound.

3. Most of the fax machines adjust their transmission speeds automatically (so called auto mode). Some machines, however; work better when transmission speed is manually set to 9600 baud. Consult the manual for the fax machine for how to do this.

1. Check the programmed numbers of the fax machine and make sure they include the area code which is needed when using the GSM-network.

2. Check that the programmed numbers are free from any specific switch board prefix.
