Chapter 1 How to use this manual

1.1 Corrective maintenanceThe network maintenance is based on the graphical supervision of thenetwork at the OMC-R.

It is also based on the identification and the replacement of faulty items ofequipment, using the alarms and the notifications. For more information, see Nortel GSM BSS Fault Management—Maintenance Principles(411-9001-039).

This process is divided into two steps:

• Locating and identifying the faulty items of equipment. For information, see Nortel GSM BTS S2000H/S2000L/e-cell Fault Clearing(411-9001-104) and Nortel GSM BSS Fault Clearing—AdvancedMaintenance Procedures (411-9001-105).

• Replacing the faulty items of equipment. For more information onthe replacement procedures, see Figure 2 "Corrective maintenancediagnostic" (page 14).

For more information, see Figure 1 "Guide to using the maintenancemanual" (page 13).

When a faulty item of equipment sends an alarm to the OMC-R, thisalarm is identified by a fault number. For more information on theprocedures associated with the various fault numbers, see Nortel GSMBTS S2000H/S2000L/e-cell Fault Clearing (411-9001-104).

For more information when a faulty item of equipment triggers severalalarms, see Nortel GSM BSS Fault Clearing—Advanced MaintenanceProcedures (411-9001-105). It enables the operator to locate this faultyitem of equipment. It also helps the operator when an abnormal operationoccurs in a BTS, a TCU, a BSC or PCM links.

12 Chapter 1 How to use this manual

1.2 Preventive maintenanceThe implementation of the preventive maintenance procedures is theresponsibility of each customer.

The preventive maintenance is used to periodically test the items ofequipment that do not directly trigger any alarm at the OMC-R.

However, the execution of these procedures may trigger alarms at theOMC-R.

This process is divided into two steps:

• the test procedures of the items of equipment

• the replacement procedures of the items of equipment

For more information, see Figure 1 "Guide to using the maintenancemanual" (page 13).

All these procedures are described in this manual.

1.3 Intervention restrictionsThere may be a lapse of time between the identification of the alarm at theOMC-R and the time the operator responsible for the intervention arrives atthe site.

The operator must be synchronized with the OMC-R (by telephone) beforean on-site intervention in the following cases:

• isolating procedure

• intervention because alarms are triggered at the OMC-R

• completion of an on-site intervention

• return to service procedure

1.4 Personnel and equipment safety 15

1.4 Personnel and equipment safety1.4.1 General personnel safety instructions

The personnel must obey the safety instructions specific to the installationsite:

• rules concerning the premises (see instructions posted on site or inthe building)

• rules linked to the general personnel safety instructions

The personnel working on the cabinet must be authorized to workaccording to the security standards.

The cabinet main external power supply is switched off by opening thecircuit breaker on the operator box.

The main power supply supplying the cabinet means that no work must bedone on the cabinet internal wiring without first cutting its external mainpower supply.

The power to the various active components of the cabinet is cut by themains circuit breaker. The external mains socket is no longer supplied.

This BTS has been evaluated under "IEEE C95. requirements, regardingsafety levels with respect to human exposure to radio frequencyelectromagnetic fields, 3 kHz to 300 GHz".

The leakage fields and equivalent power densities are orders of magnitudeless than the maximum permissible exposures (MPEs) given in the IEEEsafety guidelines.

1.4.2 Equipment safety instructionsThe S2000H and S2000L BTS operate normally when the externaltemperature is between:

• -40C and +50C for BTS with heaters

• 0C and 50C for BTS without heaters

The torque value must be respected to keep the BTS in good workingorder:

• sub D (screws) torque tightness (S2000 H/L "FP" BTS): 0.6 to 0.8 N-m

• feeder torque tightness: 1.3 to 1.7 N-m

Chapter 5 Preventive maintenanceprocedures

5.1 Introduction5.1.1 Presentation

This chapter contains the preventive maintenance procedures applicable tothe S2000 H/L BTS.

There are two types of procedures:

• Test procedures. This are given in this chapter. The structure of a testprocedure is described in the following sections.

• Replacement procedures. For more information, see Chapter 6“Replacement procedures” (page 105).

These procedures must be performed according to the schedule given inthe following tables. For more information and summary of the preventivemaintenance schedule, see Table 6 "Summary of the preventivemaintenance schedule for the S2000L BTS" (page 75) and Table 7"Summary of the preventive maintenance schedule for the S2000H BTS"(page 75).

The implementation of the preventive maintenance procedures is theresponsibility of each customer.

It is possible to group some procedures, which reduces the interventiontime. The provided intervention time corresponds to the intervention timefor only one item of equipment.
