In 1607, Jamestown was the first English settlement that survived in North America. There were 144 men and boys that found the Jamestown colony, which was named after King James 1. Out of the 144 men, only 38 survived because they were more worried about wealth and gold instead of farming and agriculture, so the food supply dwindled and they starved to death.

There were two attempts to settle English colonies in North America but they didn’t last. Sir Walter Raleigh tempted to set up the first English colony on the East Coast. He named it Virginia, after the Virgin Queen. After a year, they all decided to go back home. He then made a second attempt in 1590 in Roanoke, Virginia but then when the supply ships came, it was gone.

People settled in Jamestown because the people before that settled there had found gold in South America and they wanted it to themselves. The colonists were told that if they didn’t find any gold, they would be killed. So because of that, the men spent most of their time searching.

Wealthy business men and marketers sought opportunities to invest their money because there were better living conditions, more land, and a lot more resources that would be useful to sell. Joint stock companies would sell shares of stock to ventures and because of that, the stocks would rise. Social and Political people wanted the land because you could adventure it and discover things, there were a lot of military and native motives, and because they could turn it into another monarchy.

Positive effects that the English colonization had was the women would make different resources such as mats, corn, baskets, pots, mortars, and bread. They also brought different types of technology over and were the center of trade. A negative effect of the English Colony was there were a lot of diseases that were spread around and over 1/3 of the people died because of them.
