How can digital fabrication techniques redefine the form of the tea house, while respecting its cultural mores?

We analyzed the essential elements of a two-tatami tea house to generate a new parametric form.

Each part of the ceremony—participants, fixtures, and the tea itself—influences a regular panelized system. The wall panels define an introverted space for tea while displaying the ceremony to the public. Eight students from GSAPP at Columbia University traveled to Tokyo to design and build this tea house.
