4 HELLO & WELCOME TO SUMMER SCHOOL 2011…

… at The Glasgow School of Art. With over 50 courses on offer this July and early August for adults and young people, we hope you will find a course that will challenge your skills and stimulate the senses!

The Summer School offers a unique opportunity to work in the internationally renowned School of Art which draws visitors and students from all over the world. All of our drawing and painting courses are held in the world class painting studios of the Mackintosh Building, whilst specialist courses take place in dedicated workshops on campus, as well as the state of the art Digital Design Studio at Pacific Quay.

At the end of each week, we conclude with a social gathering in the Mackintosh Building, allowing students to meet for refreshments and view the work produced from each course during the week.

This year we have capped our course fees to match last year’s Summer prices in light of the current economic climate. Please also see details on discounts and Children’s Bursaries further on in the brochure.

Glasgow presents a diverse mix of artists and art galleries and visitors to the city will find a host of activities going on throughout the Summer.

We have teamed up with the School’s Halls of Residence to offer Summer School students discounted prices on accommodation at the Old School House – the original residence for students who studied during Mackintosh’s time.

The Summer programme offers the chance to be taught by and work alongside professional artists who include members of the teaching staff at GSA and invited lecturers drawn from the wider artistic community. We hope that whatever your experience you will quickly feel part of an exciting and inspirational community.

COURSE FORMAT & DATES

ADULT COURSES





The majority of courses are one week long, running Monday to Friday from 10.00am to 4.00pm each day. (Finish at 3pm on Fridays for refreshments and viewing of work)

Twilight Courses run for four evenings, one evening a week during each week of July (for instance, a series of four Wednesdays). The classes run from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

This year we are offfering a series of weekly creative digital media courses which run for either mornings (10am – 12.30pm) or afternoons (1.30pm – 4.30pm).

Adult courses are for persons from 16 years and there is no upper age limit.

CHILDREN’S COURSES

Week 5/ Mon 1 Aug to Fri 5 Aug

Morning courses run for one week, Monday to Friday, 10am to 12.30pm.

Afternoon courses run for one week, Monday to Friday, 1.30pm to 4pm.

A Lunch Club is offered free of charge for children who are attending both morning and afternoon courses. (See page 21 for further details)

Children’s Courses are for 7 – 15 year olds. Age bands are detailed in each course description.

COURSE FEES & DISCOUNTS

Course fees are detailed under each course description. The stated discounted fee is applicable if you are of pensionable status, unemployed or in full time education.

Evidence of your status is required at the point of booking if you apply for the discounted fee.

Discounts are also available for multiple bookings of adult week long or twilight courses - if you book more than one adult course you will receive £30 off the full price of the booking.

Discounts are not available for Children’s Courses however children attending both morning and afternoon courses can sign up for a free Lunch Club. Children’s Bursaries are also available. For further information on enrolment, fees and bursaries, see pages 21 and 26.


6 TWILIGHT &PORTFOLIO COURSES

TWILIGHT COURSES

Twilight courses run for four evenings, one evening per week for two hours during the four weeks of Summer School. Each course is held on a specific evening and students sign up for four weeks of the same course. (For instance, a series of four consecutive Wednesdays). Courses cannot be interchanged each week.

Classes run 5.30pm – 7.30pm. There are 12 places in each course and classes are open to all levels of experience including beginners.

Twilight Sketching (Mon)You will explore the practice of drawing, learning methods of measurement and analysis and experiment with materials while developing your use line, tone and composition.

Twilight Portrait Drawing (Tue)Working directly from the model, you will develop your drawing skills through a practical approach to the art of portraiture.

Twilight Life Drawing (Wed)Working directly from the life model, the course will introduce you to a variety of materials, techniques and drawing approaches and aims to challenge and develop your drawing and observational skills.

Twilight Acrylic Painting (Thu)You will experiment with a variety of techniques and explore the potential of working in acrylic paint to make both spontaneous and controlled art work.

PORTFOLIO PREPARATION COURSES

Thinking About Applying To Art School? Taking a Summer Course in portfolio preparation is a great way to find out if this is the path for you. With an emphasis on drawing, you will learn how to examine and develop your ideas through a variety of 2D and 3D drawing, mark-making, colour exploration and sketchbooks. An important part of the course is researching and developing your ideas through independent sketchbook work, and so you will be encouraged to extend your work outwith the class hours. Individual studio tutorials, group discussion and critique will help develop your creative process and encourage lateral thinking. There will also be an opportunity to view the folios of previous successful candidates.

Summer Portfolio courses are offered throughout July as one week units. You can sign up for one week only or for two, three or all four weeks. Students who take more than one portfolio course will be working on evolving and new projects each week as well as continuing personal sketchbook work. The GSA Library will be available for reference throughout your time here.

Life Drawing: An Introduction to the Human Figure

The practice of Life Drawing remains integral to art education and is an excellent starting point for anyone learning how to draw. The development of basic drawing skills will be the foundation of this course. Step by step instruction will be provided on the nature and use of materials, the elements of tone and composition, as you work directly from the nude life model on a series of progressively sophisticated exercises.

Drawing for BeginnersThis course is intended as an introduction to the drawing process. Through a series of workshops you will look at structure, form, proportion and perspective- what these terms mean and how they work. We’ll also look at handling materials (mainly charcoal and pencil) and technique, based on exercises drawing from objects, 2D images and looking at Artists’ work.

Portrait Drawing & PaintingThe emphasis of this course is to develop your drawing and painting skills through a practical approach to the art of portraiture. This course is open to students of all levels of experience.

Exploring ColourProbably the factor that can make the most significant difference to your painting is your use of colour. Most painters are still learning and experimenting with colour long into their practise. Through demonstrations and lots of exercises this course will explain the basic ideas and also improve your confidence in experimenting on your own. You will be given the opportunity to work from the clothed model and will work from subject matter such as landscape and still life through the week. The emphasis will be on realist painting (colour that can show form and space) but you will also look at and produce more abstract work. This course is open to students of all levels of experience.

Printmaking: ScreenprintingThis course will teach you a range of skills required for the process of screenprinting, from the most basic mark making to multi-colour photo stencil images. Based in the Printmaking Department you will explore hand-drawn, photographic and electronic imagery working in both monochrome and colour. Instruction covers stencil making, colour registration, print finishing, editing and advanced printmaking techniques. By the end of the week you will have produced a unique portfolio of prints on paper. Beginners and those with previous experience are welcome.

Printmaking: LithographyBased in the Printmaking Department this course will introduce the fascinating medium of zinc plate lithography. Working directly on the plates’ grained surface allows a direct approach to mark making which is constantly open to manipulation. You will explore a wide range of drawing and transfer techniques, including litho crayons, rubbing ink, and touché washes.

You will look at how to create multi-colour prints and will be introduced to the techniques of colour layering and printing in transparent and opaque inks. Beginners and those with previous experience are welcome.

Sculpture: The Human Figure Sculpting in clay directly from the nude life model, this hands-on course is designed to broaden your observation skills and teach you hand-building techniques. Considering the qualities of form and exploring ways to convey body mass and proportions, you will develop an understanding of how to accurately render the human form three dimensionally.

You will receive instruction both as a group and individually, working towards completing a piece of sculpture that will be fired and ready for collection at the end of the Summer programme. This class is suitable for beginners as well as more experienced sculptors who would like to try new approaches or experiment with technique, scale and context.

Sculpture: Making MouldsThis workshop aims to introduce you to a variety of sculptural materials and processes ranging from the simple one piece plaster mould taken from a clay relief to a two piece silicone rubber mould. The properties and potential of various materials will be looked at as will design considerations of a mould. Participants will be given the opportunity to work with a choice of materials ranging from clay, plaster, silicone rubber, cement fondu, alginate and jesmonite.

This course is suitable for a range of students from beginners to those wishing to improve their skills.

Black & White Photography This is an introduction to Black and White Photography for beginners or for those wishing to recap on previous skills. The course begins with the demonstration and understanding of the 35mm camera including camera exposure , shutter speeds and aperture control. You will also learn how to work in the darkroom, how to process film, make contact sheets and print your own images with an emphasis on compositional awareness. Medium format cameras and film can be accommodated.

Cameras are available to borrow for the week or you are welcome to bring your own.

3-D AnimationIf you are interested in learning how to create animation using the latest 3-D computer software, this course is for you. Whether you are totally new to 3-D or have a little self-taught knowledge, learning Maya with us will enable you to create your very own short piece of animation, bringing objects and simple characters to life.

This is an instructor led, workshop-based course, which will not only introduce you to practical skills and techniques, but also the limitless possibilities of 3-D animation. There are a limited number of places on this course, so we recommend booking early!

Beginners Photoshop (Morning Sessions 10am – 12.30pm)Photoshop is the current dominate digital image manipulation software today. Using your own and provided imagery the course will cover the use of Photoshop for image correction and introduce the potential for more advanced compositing and manipulation. You will learn how to use layers; the relationship of image size and resolution; what histograms can tell you and will develop skills in retouching and basic manipulation. We will learn both by demonstration in class activities and look at real examples of digital image manipulation in contemporary art and advertising.

Participants will need a USB Memory Stick in order to store work from session to session. The course is mornings only however students wishing to continue working independently on the computers in the afternoon are welcome to do so.

Please note that this is not a digital literacy course and we assume that you have a good working knowledge of modern operating systems - knowledge of Macintosh computers is a plus but not required.

Introduction to Photography in a Digital World (Afternoon Sessions 1.30pm – 4pm)This workshop is for the absolute beginner. With a combination of in-class teaching and assignments, we will build your photographic skills using your own camera and learn the basics of digital manipulation using Adobe Photoshop CS4. This course will cover the basic tenets of photography and camera functions - operation of the lens, shutter, and aperture. You will develop skills in image manipulation including contrast, colour correction, cropping and resolution. Finally you will prepare your images for quality photographic printing and learn how to archive digital images.

Participants will need to bring their camera and a USB Memory Stick. The course is afternoons only however students wishing to work independently on the computers in the mornings are welcome to do so.

Classical Cast DrawingRecently restored, the GSA’s figurative cast collection is among the finest in the UK and includes some of Art History’s preeminent sculptures.

The cast presents a stationary subject where the complexities of human form are resolved by the sculptor and are frequently organized with greater clarity than offered in drawing from life. A neutral surface allows a full display of light, halftone and shadow allowing the process of tonal rendering conducive to this setting. This course is suitable for both beginners and those with more experience in drawing and painting the figure.

Acrylic PaintingAcrylic paint offers tremendous versatility with outstanding colour range. You will experiment with a variety of techniques and art making strategies and explore spontaneous and controlled manipulations of acrylic paint that will lead to a greater understanding of this medium. The course takes advantage of the quick drying quality of this water based paint to work rapidly, emphasising immediacy, directness and colour sensitivity. This course is suitable for both beginners and more experienced artists.

Water Based MediaThis course will cover many aspects of transparent and opaque water based media including inks, gouache, acrylic and watercolour paint. There will be an emphasis on exploring a range of contemporary and traditional techniques and applications. An important aspect of this course will also include the study of artists who work in this media. Students will be encouraged to gather ideas from as varied and experimental a range of sources as possible depending on the individual. The aim of this course is to develop each person’s own style and handling of the material whether working within a representational or non-representational format. This course is suitable for both beginners and more experienced artists.

Stained Glass PanelsThis course will introduce you to several techniques for creating leaded and stained glass panels. You will learn about making patterns, cutting glass, leading and finishing. Students will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook of drawings, ideas and technical notes to support the development of their panel design. You will be given technical demonstrations and receive one-to-one tuition. By the end of the week you will have designed and constructed a small decorative stained glass panel. Suitable for beginners and those with previous experience.

Printmaking: Etching The term ‘etching’ refers to an image which has been drawn onto a metal plate and the marks are then ‘bitten’ into the surface by immersion in an acid bath. The etched plate is then inked and the image transferred to paper through an etching press.

During this course you will learn a range of skills that can be applied to the process of etching. Tuition will cover basic hard/soft ground etching and drypoint, through to more advanced techniques such as aquatint, photo-etch, and multi-plate colour printing. The aim of this course is to equip the student with the skills to produce a portfolio of high quality prints. This course is suitable for beginners as well as those with previous experience.

Commercial & Domestic Interior DesignThis is a great taster course for anyone wishing to pursue interior design studies or who would like to take on a commercial/domestic refurbishment project of their own. This is a lively and intensive course where you will be given a virtual project on day one and be set numerous exercises to take your project to conclusion. You will learn how to create a concept board, produce a room layout to scale, sketch a perspective drawing and use Photoshop to add effects. We will source furniture and finishes and explore how to select appropriate lighting. A costing exercise will be carried out for the project and you will be able to present and develop ideas within a small group. Guaranteed to stretch your creative and practical skills!

Sculpture: Portraits in ClayThis workshop will show you how to model a clay head while working directly from the life model. Considering the qualities of form and exploring ways to convey mass and proportions, you will develop an understanding of how to accurately render the human head three dimensionally. You will learn how to use the tools and equipment required for figurative sculpture and receive instruction both as a group and individually, working towards completing a piece of sculpture that will be fired and ready for collection at the end of the Summer programme. Intermediate Photoshop (Morning Sessions 10am – 12.30pm)In this course you will build on the concepts covered in Beginners Photoshop and continue with some of the advanced features of Photoshop to create image manipulations and montages that create the illusion of space, perspective and realism. By learning the advanced and combined use of selection tools, quick mask, alpha channels and layer masks you will learn what image qualities lend themselves to high quality compositing. You will also learn how to colour correct your displays for optimal colour reproduction.

Participants will need a USB Memory Stick. The course is mornings only however students wishing to continue working independently on the computers in the afternoon are welcome to do so.

Intermediate Digital Photography (Afternoon Sessions 1.30pm – 4pm)Using Adobe Photoshop CS4 and your digital camera (preferably SLR) we will discuss the limitations of the digital sensor and how to properly expose for maximum versatility of the image. You will cover the tenets of aperture and shutter speed in greater depth and will be introduced to the Zone System as a tool to pre-visualize exposure. You will learn about the digital negatives or ”RAW” files and how to process them and will be introduced to “closed loop” colour management with screen calibration for web use and for printing.

Participants will need to bring their camera and a USB Memory Stick. The course is afternoons only however students wishing to work independently on the computers in the mornings are welcome to do so.







Drawing and PaintingThis is a flexible course that will offer instruction in a wide range of drawing and painting media and allows you to choose your materials and work from a range of subjects. The course will offer one day of figure drawing (nude model), still life and the opportunity to work within the corridors of the Mackintosh Building, either studying the casts or sketching the architecture.

The course is suitable for beginners as an introduction to different materials as well as more experienced artists who want to develop their skills or try a new approach.

Portrait PaintingThe emphasis of this course is to develop your painting skills through a practical approach to the art of portraiture. Working directly from the model, drawing will form the basis of this exploration. Beginners and more experienced artists alike are welcome on this course.

Painting the Figure in ColourThe emphasis for this course is to develop a personal, bold and imaginative colour sense. The course will start with an informal discussion on colour in painting and you will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook for notes. You will be working directly from the life model to create an expressive, colourful, figurative language in various mediums: collage, inks, pastel and oil/acrylic on board/canvas. The use of hot and cold colour will be explored; sketchbooks will be filled with many exciting colour combinations and the library will be encouraged for study and class preparation. This course is aimed at practicing artists and students who have attended life drawing classes previously.

Egg Tempera PaintingThis course is an introduction to the ancient technique of Egg Tempera painting exemplified so beautifully in the work of Renaissance Painters such as Botticelli and Raphael.

Over the period of this course you will make your own gesso panel from scratch, learn to transfer drawings to gesso panel and learn to render in egg tempera. You will finish with panel paintings made with the same intricate processes as the old masters. This course is suitable for students of all levels of experience, including beginners.

Introduction to Oil PaintingThis course is designed for anyone using oil paint for the first time, or those with limited experience who want to build their knowledge and skills of drawing and painting further. Working from still life and photographs you will be introduced to fundamental drawing and painting techniques, receiving step-by-step instruction throughout. You will learn about the nature and use of materials, tone, composition and colour, working through a series of progressively sophisticated exercises.

Sculpture: Garden of Earthly DelightsDuring this course you will create a piece of indoor or garden sculpture. Looking at a range of imagery from historical painting and sculpture from gargoyles to garden gnomes you will develop ideas towards a final piece cast in weather resistant concrete. Through practical demonstration, you will be taken through a process from modelling your ideas in clay, to making a mould and casting a final piece. This course is suitable for students of all levels.

BookbindingThis course offers an introduction to the craft of bookbinding. It will give you the opportunity to explore a variety of bookbinding techniques, including folded book structures, pamphlet stitch, concertina books, case bound books and exposed stitch such as Coptic and long stitch. We will look at a range of different book structures from conventional to experimental including Artists’ books and investigate both form and content. Life Drawing: Anatomy of the FigureThis intensive workshop in Artistic Anatomy will focus on the major forms of the human body. Drawing exercises and demonstrations will culminate in a sustained drawing using directional lighting. Particular attention will be given to identifying skeletal landmarks, providing reliable points of comparison and a clear grasp of plane breaks and articulation. Recognising anatomy without stopping to check every decision, allows for greater momentum in the drawing process. The resulting work is less reliant on early measurement, enabling you to work in an intuitive, responsive manner while keeping a sense of proportion. This course is suitable for those who have attended a life class before as well as experienced artists.

Oil PaintingThis course will explore the versatility of oil paint, initially covering how to prepare a surface, the mixing and application of oil paint and what sort of brushes to use. Black & White Photography This workshop is open to students of all levels of experience and offers a hands-on approach to black and white photography and darkroom techniques. You will be guided through controlling the exposure and composition of a 35mm film camera and learn how to process and print your own films using our darkroom facilities. There will be time on the course to make your own pinhole camera, experiment with photograms and discuss your own individual photographic interest with the tutor.

Cameras are available to borrow for the week or you are welcome to bring your own.

Glass Fusing & SlumpingThis course covers the techniques of cutting glass, painting, fusing and slumping. You will experiment with different types of glass to learn about the compatibilities of the material and will also explore the effects of variable kiln temperatures and firings. During the week you will have the opportunity to work with vitreous paints, frits, stringers and powders, a selection of glasses (eg. Bullseye, dichroic, iridescent, textured). Design and colour will form an important part of the studio work alongside technical studies. You will produce a variety of work ranging from small fused pieces of jewellery to larger slumped bowls.

Creative Sound Design for Film, Video, Animation & the WebThis course will give you the opportunity to work in an internationally renowned, state of the art facility with established audio professionals. You will be guided through the process of recording, editing and mixing a well-balanced soundtrack for visual media. Through learning some time-tested techniques you can create an engaging soundtrack with real impact, and dramatically improve the sound quality of your video, films, animations and web content, without having to spend a fortune on new equipment. You will also learn how to produce your own music (no previous experience necessary) and create your own sound effects using industry standard state of the art software. Beginners Video for the Absolute Novice (Morning Sessions 10am – 12.30pm)During this course you will learn to conceive, shoot and edit a short video of your own creation. You will learn the basic elements of camera use, cinematic terminology, story-boarding, simple production techniques, and editing using iMovie. You will custom package your final results using iDVD and learn how to put them on-line using popular video hosting websites. Although the contact time includes five half day sessions, the successful projects will largely be produced and edited outside class time. Students are welcome to work independently on the computers in the afternoons.

Participants will need their own video camera and a portable drive. Cameras may be miniDV or Hard Disk (HDD) type including micro camcorders.



Introduction to Web Design (Afternoon Sessions 1.30pm – 4pm)In this course you will cover the basics of web design by building your own personal website. You will cover the basics of web page construction using HTML and CSS, touching on Adobe Dreamweaver and a host of free and OpenSource software in our lab of Mackintosh computers. You will also cover how to format images for the web using Photoshop CS4. You will be shown how to make your site live by going through the steps of purchasing and deploying your work on a web hosting provider.

The course is afternoons only however students wishing to work independently on the computers in mornings are welcome to do so.





MONDAY 1ST – FRIDAY 5TH AUGUST21 CON ED COURSES FOR CHILDREN

CHILDREN’S COURSESWe have a variety of Children’s Courses this Summer during the first week of August. Courses run for a full week (Monday to Friday) either for a morning session (10am – 12.30pm) or an afternoon session (1.30pm – 4pm).

Children are welcome to enrol for two courses, morning and afternoon and attend Lunch Club free of charge. The courses are held across the GSA campus, both in the Mackintosh Building and within the specialist workshops of Photography, Sculpture and Printmaking.

LUNCH CLUBA Lunch Club is provided free of charge for children who attend both a morning and an afternoon course. Children are supervised by an adult during the lunch hour. Please note that children must bring their own packed lunch.

A limited number of places are available on the Lunch Club so please book early.

If a student is attending the full day of classes and does not wish to participate in Lunch Club, it is essential that written permission is given by the parent/guardian to allow the child to leave the premises at lunchtime. Please submit written permission along with your course application form.

MATERIALSStudents are asked to provide some basic drawing and painting materials for their course, such as a sketchbook, pencils and some colour materials. A materials list will be included with the course confirmation letter/email. Specialist courses will have the majority of materials provided (see course descriptions for details). Students enrolled on Summer School will receive a 10% discount at Artstore (see page 24 for further details).

BURSARIESAs part of the School’s strategy to encourage participation in Further and Higher education from currently under represented groups, a system of bursary support is available for Children’s Courses. This support is aimed at low income or unemployed families who would otherwise be unable to attend the Continuing Education programme. Our aim is to offer direct assistance in the form of a fee waiver. There are a limited number of bursaries available and only one bursary may be awarded per household.

Mixed Media Sculpture

Ages 10 – 11 Mornings Ages 12 – 13 AfternoonsThis class offers a wide variety of materials to work with in an open and inventive way. Emphasis is given to recycling and the unconventional use of everyday materials and images from our natural surroundings. You will design and create your own unique sculpture while exploring the use of different forms, structures, surfaces, textures and colours. Specialist materials are provided for this course.

Based in the screenprinting workshop, you will explore hand drawn images and work in black and white as well as colour. This workshop will provide you with the skills to produce a set of prints on paper, as well as the opportunity to print on a t-shirt to take away with you at the end of the course. You will be required to bring in some sketchbooks/drawings to be able to start the process.

Comic Books! Ages 10 – 11 Mornings Ages 12 – 13 AfternoonsThis course is all about creating your own comics and telling your own stories! We will discuss and practise character creation, how panels work on the page to effectively tell a story and how the merger of word balloons and images make your tales come to life. You will design and create your own comic through the course of the week. It could be a fully completed story, or the beginnings of an epic tale that you will continue after the course on your own.

Jewellery Making

Ages 12 – 15 AfternoonsCreate a variety of jewellery pieces using materials such as beads, paper, wire, found and recycled materials. You can be as expressive as you like, exploring colour, texture, scale and wear-ability. The work you design can be for everyday wear or for the catwalk! Some materials and handtools are provided for the course but students are encouraged to bring along materials that inspire them as well as photos and magazine cuttings.


24 GENERAL INFORMATION

Tuition

Course tutors are members of the GSA teaching staff as well as invited artists and designers drawn from the wider artistic community who specialise in their field. Tuition is through demonstration and discussion, as well one-to-one advice and guidance.

Life Models

Many courses include a life model.

Life Models are nude/unclothed and a level of studio etiquette must be followed (life room rules and etiquette information will be issued at the start of life classes). The model works to the direction of the tutor, involving short, moving or sustained poses. Models are clothed for portraiture classes. Photography is not permitted within the studio during a life class.

Studios/Workshops

Courses take place in the studios normally used by Degree students during term time. This includes the world class Painting studios of the Mackintosh Building as well as specialist workshops across the GSA campus. Please take care of your belongings whilst you are here.

We regret that we cannot be held responsible for the loss of students’ belongings.

Materials/ Artstore

You are asked to supply your own materials, unless otherwise indicated in the course description. Your confirmation email/letter will include a list of recommended materials to bring along.

Students attending Continuing Education courses are eligible to receive a 10% discount on materials purchased at the Artstore, located at 94 Queen Street, Glasgow (opposite the Gallery of Modern Art). A branch of the Artstore is also located on campus within the Haldane Building on Rose Street. At the time of going to print, Artstore opening hours over the Summer period had not been confirmed.

Induction & Weekly Reception

Each week we invite students to meet before the start of classes in the Mackintosh Building for tea/coffee and a brief induction on the weeks’ events.

At the end of each week we conclude with a social gathering with refreshments offering the opportunity to view work and meet students attending other classes.

Library

The GSA library which is located in the Bourdon building will be open for reference during the Summer months from Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 4.45pm (Closed Monday 18th July). The Library will not be open at weekends. The Library in the Mackintosh Building is opened by appointment.


25 GENERAL INFORMATION

Accommodation

The School is able to provide self catering accommodation in the GSA Student Residencies at The Old School House on Renfrew Street or Margaret MacDonald House on Buccleuch Street for students attending Summer School courses.

For further information, please contact Fiona Sloan, Residence Manager on 0141 331 1261.

If the Residencies are unable to provide you with accommodation, they will have alternative suggestions within walking distance of the School.

Please note, you cannot book accommodation through the Continuing Education office.

Parking & Transport

Parking around the School campus is difficult so we advise that you use public transport where possible. Park and ride facilities are available at Bridge Street, Kelvinbridge, Shields Road and West Street Underground Stations. (Cowcaddens is the nearest underground station to the Art School).

For rail transport: Queen Street, Charing Cross and Central Station are all within easy walking distance. Alternatively, there is a NCP car park at Cambridge Street very near to the School.

Paid parking is available at the Science centre Car Park at low cost for courses held at the Digital Design Studio at Pacific Quay.

Disabled Access

As the school sits on a very steep hill, it is recommended that students with mobility difficulties discuss their requirements with the Continuing Education department before making a formal application. Curbs are lowered in areas surrounding the School. Lifts are available in buildings used for courses.

26 ENROLMENT PROCEDURE

Booking a Course

It is not possible to reserve a place on a course. Full payment is required in order to place your booking. Enrolment is by telephone, post or in person direct to the Continuing Education office. Places are allocated on a first come first serve basis from the time that the brochure is released.

An application form can be found at the back of this brochure. Please complete all sections on this form and include payment if sending by post to the address detailed on the form. Alternatively, booking and payment can be made by debit/credit card by phoning the Continuing Education department on 0141 353 4596/4565.

Booking Confirmation

Confirmation of your booking will be sent by email or by post if an email address is unavailable. You will receive confirmation as soon as full enrolment is reached which can be up to one week prior to the start of the course. Material lists and any additional information will be included in your confirmation.

Fees

Fees vary according to class size, facilities, equipment, essential materials required, tuition and/or life models.

Discounts

Course fees are detailed under each course description. The stated discounted fee is applicable if you are of pensionable status, unemployed or in full time education. Evidence of your status is required at the point of booking if you apply for the discounted fee.

Discounts are also available for multiple bookings of adult week long or twilight courses - if you book more than one adult course you will receive £30 off the full price of the booking.

Discounts are not available for Children’s Courses however children attending both morning and afternoon courses can sign up for a free Lunch Club.

Bursaries are also available, see page 21 for information.


ENROLMENT PROCEDURE

Booking Cancellation

Refunds cannot be offered if you choose to cancel your booking. We understand that personal circumstances can change however GSA cannot accept responsibility for this.

However, if there is a change to your personal circumstances beyond your control prior to the start of your course, we will make every effort to offer you an alternative course or discuss payment plans. The only exception for a refund will be students withdrawing from a course on medical or compassionate grounds (documentation may be requested). Refunds will only be authorised by the Head of Finance in consultation with the Head of Continuing Education.

If a course is cancelled due to insufficient enrolment you will be offered an alternative course or a full refund. At the time of going to print, all course information is correct however you will be notified of any changes that may directly affect your course.
