Aare scanned every single day, in every continent. Simply put, the GS1

barcode has transformed the world by creating a global language of business.

Even though GS1 System of Standards are yet to comb each and every sector where applicable, GS1 Kenya has continued to ensure that Kenyan businesses and consumers alike have a uniform way of identifying, capturing and sharing information across the supply chain. This is because GS1 solutions have become the foundation of business processes for many enterprises.

Esteemed readers, GS1 Kenya remains focused on unveiling new products to address an informed, dynamic and competitive market. It is my hope that all our members will continue lending us their support as we tackle the new business year.

In concluding, Sir Thomas Watson once said, “To be successful, you have to have your heart in your business, and your business in your heart”

Let me take this opportunity to wish a happy New Year!

2015 was a great year for GS1 Kenya. The highlight of it being the recognition received in Belgium for our 15 – year existence in Kenya. The year also saw the welcoming of new Directors as we bid farewell to some who served in the various divisions from time to time.

On matters traceability, GS1 Kenya hosted a breakfast event with various stakeholders to discuss

work towards a healthy nation, it is our hope that the already available GS1 traceability solutions are able to address some of these challenges. We also held a successful workshop targeting the health sector with regards to technology; no doubt, this is one sector that could gain from the various GS1 technology solutions that we have to provide.

Forging ahead, GS1 Kenya believes that from the various successful events held in 2015, with your support, we look forward to an even better year as we seek for growth through our range of activities.

Wishing you the best in 2016!

In Kenya since our conception 15 years ago, we have worked tirelessly to ensure GS1 standards are implemented in various sectors. We are mostly known though for the barcodes used in formal retail outlets. Without a doubt we have revolutionized the way people do business in this sector in Kenya and our presence cannot go unnoticed. We the current queues that are experienced in these retail outlets, I wonder what the situation would be if barcodes were non-existence at this particular point in time.

Tcoined in 1909 by Harry Gordon Selfridge, the founder of Selfridge’s department store in London, and is typically used by businesses to convince customers that they will

get good service at this company and convince employees to give customers good service

It Gives Abrasive Customers an Unfair Advantage

customers can demand just about anything -- they’re right by

harder when trying to rein them in.

Also, it means that abusive people get better treatment and conditions than nice people. That always seemed wrong to me, and it makes much more sense to be nice to the nice customers to keep them coming back

Some Customers Are Bad for Business

some customers are quite simply bad for business.

Danish IT service provider ServiceGruppen proudly tell this story:

One of our service technicians arrived at a customer’s site for a maintenance task, and to his great shock was treated very rudely by the customer.

management about his experience. They promptly cancelled the customer’s contract.

Just like Kelleher dismissed the irate lady who kept complaining

calculation -- not a question of whether either company would make or lose money on that customer in the long run. It was a simple matter of respect and dignity and of treating their employees right.

It Results in Worse Customer Service

Employees who are happy at work give better customer service because:

• They care more about other people, including customers• They have more energy• They are happy, meaning they are more fun to talk to and interact with• They are more motivated

On the other hand, when the company and management consistently side with customers instead of with employees, it sends a clear message that:

• Employees are not valued• Treating employees fairly is not important• Employees have no right to respect from customers• Employees have to put up with everything from customers

When this attitude prevails, employees stop caring about service. At that point, genuinely good service is almost impossible -- the best customers can hope

Top Reasons Why ‘The Customer Is Always Right’ Is Wrong

Most businesses think that “the more customers the better”. But some customers are quite simply bad for business.

Increased patient safety and huge potential savings are reasons enough to start implementing traceability now. The implementation will demand commitment on all levels, not least for removing a number of obstacles. The obstacles include the absence of logistics support in some hospitals, poor

GS1 Netherlands therefore favors the introduction of legislation for Traceability in the Netherlands too. 100% traceability requires clear agreements between suppliers and hospitals. GEFCO is one of the leading transport and logistics companies in Europe. With a turnover of €3.5 billion in 2008, GEFCO has grown at a constant 40% per year since 1998, and currently has over 10,000 employees in 27 countries across four continents.

As a solutions architect and integrator, GEFCO is responsible for engineering, operating and implementing logistics solutions covering part or all of the supply chain for a number of strategic industries such as automotive, consumer goods, electronics, aeronautic and more.

A logistics integrator such as GEFCO guarantees tracking of goods along the whole supply chain, working closely with suppliers, manufacturers and retailers. The use of standards for labeling, messages and barcoding enables GEFCO to synchronise information exchanges between these di erent players and to secure information and transaction ows.

In 2009 the GEFCO group decided to implement the GS1 SSCC Identi cation Key for all of its transport activities in Europe. The implementation of this GS1 standard has been carefully adapted to the requirements of more than 2,000 GEFCO customers who use it as they ship over 100,000 parcels every day.

Building on the GS1 System of standards, GEFCO teams develop tailor-made solutions for customers, including: • Modi cation and update of tools and client interfaces (EDI, computer systems, barcode scanners)

Adopted from GS1 Global

Analysis of labeling system impacts on existing EDI messages and the systematic migration to GS1 eCom standards

Communication and training of all internal and external logistics teams

An example of such an implementation was driven by the need for increased reliability of cosmetic goods distribution for one of the largest specialised distribution networks in Spain. Two large retailers, who had entered a partnership to launch a chain of retail stores in Spain, wanted to increase the performance of cosmetic goods distribution to their 84 retail outlets both in terms of quantity (with delivery of approximately 4,000 pallets per year) and quality, in order to improve their brand image.

The previous product distribution solution consisted of direct delivery from the suppliers to the retail outlets, utilising a multi-standard labeling system; this method su ered from high transport costs and excess complexity in ows and product tracking management.

With over 600 stores, Carrefour Belgium is one of the leaders in the mass retail distribution sector in Belgium. Carrefour Belgium took on the objective to optimise and rationalise the goods reception in their warehouses. 350 Fast Moving

Consumer Goods (FMCG) suppliers were involved in the project. Together with GS1 Belgium & Luxembourg, suppliers were educated on how to implement the GS1 standards in order to achieve the objective.Logistic Challenges

When goods arrive at the Carrefour distribution centre they are registered for traceability reasons. In practice, Carrefour scans every incoming pallet by capturing the SSCC on the GS1 logistic label. This means that prior to delivery the suppliers have to mark every pallet with a GS1 logistic label containing the SSCC. However, Carrefour often received pallets with unsatisfactory logistic labels. Either the label was entirely missing, the logistic label was not compliant with the GS1 standards because of a missing or wrong SSCC, or the label is poorly prinited. For Carrefour this resulted in higher handling costs, a loss of time and consequentially waiting queues for truck drivers.

ObjectiveTo optimise goods reception with correct GS1 logistic labels and the advanced shipping notice (e.g DESADV).

Use of GS1 StandardsIn collaboration with GS1 Belgium & Luxembourg, Carrefour invited all of the 350 suppliers to a seminar. Carrefour educated the suppliers about the need for an improved logistic ow and the bene ts of using GS1 standards. GS1 Belgium & Luxembourg elaborated on how to create a correct SSCC and GS1 logistic label, and how to get started with the EDI DESADV. After the session the suppliers were invited to talk to the EDI solution providers present at the seminar.

The objectives set out in the project include that:By July 2011 all suppliers should be using the correct labelling method

and By mid-2012Carrefourwouldliketoreceivetheelectronic despatch

advice from 80% of the 350 FMCG suppliers. More speci cally the 3-Way Match IDEAL DESADV (e.g a harmonized subset from EANCOM D.01B DESADV used by Belgian suppliers and retailers). In this way Carrefour can match the goods reception with the corresponding DESADV, which in turn displays the details of delivery.

The underlying idea is that both the suppliers and Carrefour will gain from an e cient logistic ow. The bene ts include a faster and accurate goods reception, less waiting time for the transporter and fewer disputes on invoices resulting in faster payments. Speci cally for the DESADV, both Carrefour and the

Key Implementation LearningsGS1 Belgium & Luxembourg decided to actively engage, as a neutral party, in the roll out of SSCC and DESADV for Carrefour. In this roll out it has been very important to to rst reach and inform the suppliers to show them of the bene ts of using GS1 standards. Next, it was important that the suppliers were made aware that they may rely on the services of GS1 Belgium & Luxembourg (e.g. veri cation service for the GS1 logistic label). Because of these requirements, further communication such as mailings, newsletters, communicating case studies etc, are planned.

Next StepsTo continue enhancing the logistic ow and the administrative processes with the roll out of the 3-Way Match (Order to Cash) EDI messages. The ultimate goal is to create a win-win situation for both parties while taking into account an ecological, economical and sustainable point of view.
