What is an International Barcode?國際條碼知多少？

An international standard barcode comprises two components:一個國際標準條碼包括兩部份：

International GS1 System – the Global Language of Business

GS1 System has been swiftly adopted by key industries, including fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), toys and household wares as the single standard for product identification. Today, major supermarkets and retailers require suppliers to ensure products are registered for an effective GS1 EAN/UPC barcode before putting on sale.

GS1 System enables implementation of electronic trading. Worldwide biggest online shopping platforms such as Amazon, eBay and Tmall.com have begun to request dealers to provide effective GS1 EAN/UPC barcodes for their products. The introduction of Online-to-Offline (O2O), an alternative of interactive consumption, provides consumers an integrated and complete shopping experience through physical shops, online shops and mobile devices. Barcode Number Allocation Flow

1. Allocation of GS1 PrefixAfter application, members will obtain a GS1 company prefix assigned by GS1 Hong Kong. Members can then add the product code and identifier after the prefix.

2. Allocation of numberProduct Code: Members can use the product and location information portal of BarcodePlus to allocate products and equipments an individual code.

3. Data registrationAccording to the “Commodity Basic Information”, all products are required to be described in details and registered onto the website of BarcodePlus after a barcode is assigned.

4. Design and printingDifferent barcode designs are required for different product packages, sizes, colours and applications. It is advised to follow GS1 Hong Kong’s menus as reference and consult with a printer.

5. Barcode testing serviceApart from prepress proofing and quality control during printing, manufacturers and packaging plants shall also ensure the barcode is readable before packaging.

編配條碼流程一覽

1. 分配字首

完成入會手續後，會員將取得由本會分配的公司

字首，可自行銜接其後的貨品代號及檢核碼。

2. 號碼配置

貨品代號﹕會員利用會員專享的BarcodePlus網上平台，按照不同貨品，獨立分配貨品代號，

以貨品代號定義位置及資產設備等代碼。

3. 登記資料

條碼完成後，應依「商品基本資料」指定的格式

描述貨品，並將資料登記在BarcodePlus網上

平台。

4. 設計印刷

不同包裝、大小、顏色或應用的貨品包裝，需要

不同的條碼設計，應參考本會說明手冊及與印刷

廠商討印製細節。

5. 測試條碼服務

為確保能成功讀取條碼，除印前打樣測試及印刷

過程的品質監控外，生產或包裝工廠應於包裝前

檢查條碼可讀率。

6. Product packagingAdjustment is needed if the barcode is damaged during the process of packaging. Attention shall be paid to quality assurance of barcode label and labelling procedure.

7. Sales promotionMembers are eligible to upload extended product information for displaying on “Consumer Connect” mobile app to promote products.

8. Brand buildingMembers are eligible to apply for Value+ Product Authentication service and “Consumer Caring Scheme” to build brand awareness. *

9. Product trackingezTRACK™ platform enables real-time visibility of goods and information flow from point of manufacturing, inventory, shipment notice, retail to point of destination. *

10. Paperless order-to-cash tradingezTRADE, a standard-based B2B e-commerce platform, facilitates the exchange of electronic orders, invoices and shipment notices among trading parties, enabling greater efficiency. *

Why should brand owners get a Hong Kong Prefix 489?Hong Kong brands and products have long been renowned for high quality and safety. A barcode starting with the prefix 489 means that it is issued by GS1 Hong Kong, and that this product is produced by a Hong Kong-registered company. It boosts consumer confidence by helping them to correlate the products with quality and safety, and also facilitates companies to uplift brand value and win the consumers’ heart.

How to design a standard GS1 EAN/UPC?Brand owners, supplier or manufacturers are required to use an effective GS1 Company Prefix, followed by an Item Reference and Check Digit.

How to obtain an effective GS1 Company Prefix?Companies are required to become the member of their local GS1, i.e., a Hong Kong registered company shall apply its membership from GS1 Hong Kong and an US company shall apply its membership from GS1 US. After a membership is obtained, GS1 will issue an individual Company Prefix to that company.

Is it possible to develop a Company Prefix on our own?No. To ensure each GS1 barcode is unique, a Company Prefix is required to be issued by the GS1 member organisa-tion. GS1 has already issued Company Prefix to over two million corporate members. Hence, using an unauthorised GS1 Company Prefix as product barcode might cause problem to global supply chain.

What will happen if an unauthorised GS1 barcode is being used?Using a self-encoded, expired, other company’s Company Prefix knowingly or without known is considered as unauthorised uses of barcodes. Members of the GS1 community that has span across 110 countries are determined to work with local major retailers to combat the use of unauthorised GS1 through conducting periodical check, reporting problematic barcodes. Any parties who failed to observe to legitimacy of barcode usage will be subject to fine payment, black listed or legal liability.
