    GOLden GLOBeS AwARdS

    69th Annual Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The award ceremony was hosted by British comedian, Ricky Gervais, who hosted the show for te second consecutive year. The Golden Globe Awards are sponsored by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to recognise excellence in film, television both domestic and foreign. The Artist, the French-made black-and-white silent movie about Hollywood in the '20s, directed by Michel Hazanavicius won three awards at the 69th annual Golden Globes Awards including statues for best comedy or musical and best actor comedy or musical for Jean Dujardin. The Descendants directed by Alexander Payne won for best drama. George Clooney won the Golden Globe in the category of Best actor-drama for his performance in the film- The Descendants. Meryl Streep's turn as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady earned her the best actress drama award and her eighth Golden Globe.

    Other acting winners were Michelle Williams, Christopher Plummer and Octavia Spencer, and Martin Scorsese earned the directing honor for Hugo. Michelle Williams won for actress in a musical or comedy as Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn, 52 years after Monroe's win for the same prize at the Globes for Some Like It Hot. Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin won for best animated film, and the Iranian tale A Separation was named the foreign-language winner.

    The Padma awards for the year 2012 were announced on the eve of Indias 63rd Republic Day.     the awardees. The late cartoonist Mario Miranda and the late musician Bhupen Hazarika were amongst the five people awarded the Padma Vibhushan. Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi were confirmed for Padma Bhushan along with 25 more awardees. Indias highest civilian awards, Padma Awards are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan

    and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in all disciplines/ fields of activities, art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.

    Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order and Padma Shri for

    distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year. The awards are conferred by the President of India at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhawan around March/ April.

    MALLIKARJUn MAnSUR AwARd

    Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan was presented the Mallikarjun Mansur award in recognition of his achievements on 3 January 2012. He has enthralled audience worldwide with his unique style of playing the instrument with his finger nails. Khan is the first north Indian artiste to have performed in honour of saint composer Thyagaraja at his birth place at Thiruvaiyur in Tamil Nadu. He is also a recipient of many awards like Sangeet Natak academy award, Tansen Award, UNESCO Award, UNICEF National Ambassadorship and International Music Forum Award. The award, instituted by the Karnataka government, carries a cash prize of Rs one lakh and a citation. Vocalist Kishori Amonkar, Pandit Jasraj and Dr Balamuralikrishna were the earlier recipients of the award.

    AShOKA ChAKRA

    President of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil conferred the Ashoka

    Chakra on Lt. Navdeep Singh (posthumous) on the occasion of the

    63rd Republic Day Parade 2012 in New Delhi. Lt. Navdeep Singh was awarded the Ashoka Chakra for single-handedly eliminating four infiltrating terrorists on 20 August 20 2011. Lieutenant Navdeep Singh was Ghatak Platoon Commander of 15 Maratha Light Infantry deployed in the High Altitude Area near the Line of Control. On receiving information about the infiltration of a group of terrorists he laid an ambush at the appropriate spot. When the terrorists were spotted, the ambush was sprung by the officer himself. An exchange of intense fire ensued. the officer

    eliminated three terrorists at close range. On seeing another terrorist approaching their position, he swiftly changed his firing position. While doing so, he got hit by a bullet on his head. Further, displaying utmost bravery and comradeship, he pulled an injured fellow-soldier to safety and kept firing till he became unconscious due to excessive blood loss.

    OTheR GALLAnTRy AwARdS

    Besides the President also approved the award of three Kirti Chakra. Lt. Col. Kamaldeep Singh (Rajputana Rifles / 18TH Battalion the Rashtriya Rifles), Capt. Ashutosh Kumar (5th Battalion the Rajputana Rifles) and Lt. Sushil Khajuria (Army Service Corps / 18th battalion The Grenadiers) were the three Kirti Chakra awardees. Of the three, Lt. Khajuria was conferred the award posthumously for his gallantry during an encounter with terrorists in the Kupwara region of Jammu and Kashmir.

    Sixteen persons were awarded the Shaurya Chakra, the nations third-highest gallantry award in peacetime. While most of the Shaurya Chakra awardees are Armymen, the awardees also include a Jammu and Kashmir Special Police Officer (SPO) Barket Ali, who was conferred the award posthumously.

    President Pratibha Patil approved conferring of 368 gallantry awards, including 28 Param Vishisht Seva Medals and 45 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals. The Armys additional director-general (public information) Maj. Gen. S.L. Narasimhan was awarded an Ati Vishisht Seva Medal for his leadership in relief and rescue efforts in the wake of the Sikkim earthquake in 2010.

    AwARd fOR exCeLLenCe In IndIAn fOReIGn SeRvICe

    D Bala Venkatesh Verma, Joint Secretary Disarmament in the Ministry of External Affairs was conferred with the first S K Singh Award for excellence in the Indian Foreign Service on 6 January 2012. The award was presented to him by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi in recognition of his extradordinary efforts to strengthen India's position during the Indo-US nuclear deal. Senior Indian diplomat D. Bala Venkatesh Varma, a key member of the negotiating team that saw the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal through from the first agreement of July 2005 to the Additional Protocol in 2010. Varma, a 1988 batch officer of the foreign service, is an expert in nuclear matters and is currently posted as Joint Secretary (Disarmament and International Security Affairs) at the Ministry of External Affairs in Delhi. Following the adoption of the NSG's decision in September 2008, Verma played a crucial role in ensuring that

    the text of an Additional Protocol was finalised to India's satisfaction. Also, Varma's negotiating skills were applied in concluding the India-specific Safeguards Agreement with the IAEA.

    The award for excellence in the Indian Foreign Service is named after the former foreign secretary and Governor, Shailendra Kumar Singh, a diplomat widely respected within the IFS community for his acumen, professionalism and leadership. Varma was selected as the first recipient of the prestigious award by a top-drawer jury consisting of Vice President Hamid Ansari, National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon, Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai, Ms Gandhi and Congress M.P. Rahul Gandhi.

    v. ShAnTARAM LIfe TIMe AChIeveMenT AwARd

    Veteran environmental filmmaker Mike Pandey was honoured with the prestigious V. Shantaram Life Time Achievement Award at the Mumbai International Film Festival 2012 on 3 February 2012. The award was presented by Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan. He received the award for his documentaries on wildlife conservation and environment. Mike Pandey is one of Indias foremost wildlife and environmental filmmakers. He hasd won over 300 national and international awards. His list of films include Shores of Silence, The Last Migration, Broken Wings and The Timeless Traveller.

    The award carries a citation, a trophy and a cash prize of Rs.5 lakh. It was instituted in 1996 in memory of the legendary filmmaker V. Shantaram. The award is given with an objective to recognise the multi-faceted contributions of an Indian for the documentary film movement.

    RAMnATh GOenKA AwARdS fOR exCeLLenCe

    In JOURnALISM

    Ramnath Goenka Awards for Excellence in Journalism 2012 was held at Taj Palace, New Delhi on 16 January 2012. Vice President of India, Hamid ansari was the graced the occasion as Chief Guest. 30 awards in total were given away for outstanding work done in print and broadcast media in various categories. The Pioneers J Gopikrishnan and CNBC-TV18s Udayan Mukherjee were adjudged Journalist of the Year at the 5th Ramnath Goenka Awards for Excellence in Journalism. At the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards 2012, CNN-IBN bagged three prestigious awards in various categories. Journalists Anubha Bhonsle, Preeti Singh and Arijit Sen of CNN-IBN were honoured with the prominent award.

    Anubha Bhonsle won the Best Political Reporter award for her show Paisa Power Politics exposing the relationship between those who fight elections and those who fund it. Preeti Singh won Best on the spot Reporter of the year for her coverage of the flood affected areas inside the Karnool district of Andhra Pradesh. Arijit Sen was awarded the Best reporter from North East for his reports on fake encounters in Manipur and the plight of people caught between militants and the state. The Prakash Kardaley Memorial Award for Civic Journalism went to Tripti Lahiri of Tehelka. The Indian Express Raghav Ohri bagged the Priya Chandrasekhar Memorial Award for Excellence in Editing, while Daksh Panwar of The Indian Express won the Sanjiv Sinha Memorial Award for Excellence in Editing.

The Ramnath Goenka foundation was set up in 1992 in the memory of late Ramnath Goenka, founder of The Indian Express, freedom fighter and doyen of Indian journalism, to encourage and propagate high-quality, objective journalism. The Awards aim to celebrate excellence in journalism, recognize courage and commitment and showcase outstanding contributions and individuals every year.

    GReen GLOBe AwARd

    Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan received a Green Globe for Outstanding Efforts by a Celebrity for his efforts toward a greener future at the fourth edition of the Panasonic Green Globe Foundation Awards on 2 february 2012. He received the award from Hollywood actor and former Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger. The award is conferred to honour the efforts of organisations and individuals fighting climate change through their work in environment preservation and regeneration. The Terminator star, Schwarzenegger was the guest of honour at the event. This was the first time that Arnie, as fans fondly call him, visited India. During his visit Schwarzenegger also attended the day-long Delhi Sustainable Development Summit presided over by the Indian Prime Minister.

    PRIde Of IndIA AwARd

    Visiting union minister for labour and employment Mallikarjun Kharge was presented with Pride of India award

    by the Indian-American community in Washington on 1 February 2012. He was honoured with the award for his over four decades of public service. The award was presented jointly by the Indian American Friendship Council (IAFC) and India Association of North Texas (IANT) at a reception hosted in honour of the visiting union minister, Kharge in Dallas. In his address, Kharge provided an update on various bilateral memoranda on items of mutual interest, such as mining safety, employment, social security and said that India's GDP is poised to grow at a faster pace than most of the nations.

    dSC PRIze fOR SOUTh ASIA LITeRATURe

    Singapore-based Sri Lankan author Shehan Karunatilaka was awarded the DSC Prize for South Asia Literature 2012, at the Jaipur Literature Festival in Rajasthan on 21 January 2012. Karunatilka won $50,000 for his book Chinaman. The novel explores cricket as a metaphor to uncover a lost life and a lost history. The title of the novel, published by Random House, refers to a left-arm unorthodox spinner in cricket, often described as the chinaman. The legend of a Sri Lankan bowler Pradeep Sivanathan Mathew and the sport of cricket form the crux of this book. The jury for the 2012 $ 50,000 prize included renowned literary figures Dr Alastair Niven, Dr Fakrul Alam, Faiza S Khan and Marie Brenner.

    The prize was instituted in January 2010 to celebrate writing that highlights the South Asian region, its people, culture and diaspora. Envisioned as a unique and prestigious award, the award recognizes theliterary works of authors across the globe writing on South Asia. DSC Prize for South Asia Literature

    InfOSyS PRIze

    Six researchers from five science streams were honoured with the Infosys Prize-2011 by the former President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in Bangalore on 9 January 2012. The prize winners include Kalyanmoy Deb, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (engineering and computer science); Imran Siddiqi, scientist, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad (life sciences); Kannan Soundarajan, director, Mathematics Research Centre, Stanford University, U.S. (mathematical sciences); Sriram Ramaswamy, Professor, Centre for Condensed Matter Theory, Indian

    T.V. Mohandas Pai, announced on the occasion that a new award category in humanities would be introduced from 2012. It would cover philosophy, history, archaeology, linguistics and literary sciences.

The Infosys Prize is amongst the highest in terms of money given for any award in India.The noted scientists were selected by the Foundation trustees and the eminent jury panels comprising Nobel laureate Amartya Sen for Social Sciences, Shrinivas Kulkarni (physical sciences), Pradeep K. Khosla

    (engineering and computer science), S.R. Varadhan (mathematical sciences) and Inder Verma (life sciences). The Foundation is funded by a corpus of Rs.100 crore (Rs.10 billion), contributed by the trustees and an annual grant from the global software major.

    MAhATMA GAndhI InTeRnATIOnAL AwARd

    Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama was presented the Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Peace and Reconciliation on 4 January 2011, the fourth day of the ten-day Kalachakra initiations. The grand daughter of Mahatma Gandhi, Ila Gandhi, presented

    the award, instituted in 2003, to the Dalai Lama at the Kalachakra ground. Ila Gandhi, who is based in South Africa, is chairman of the Gandhi Development Trust that gives the award.

    The Dalai Lama was supposed to have received the award in October 2011 as part of a much anticipated visit to South Africa. The visit however had to be called off following a five-week wait for a visa to be issued. Former recipients of the Mahatma Gandhi International Award include Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, South African leader Nelson Mandela and Tanzanias Julius Nyerere.

    42nd International FilmFestival of India (IFFI)

    The 42nd edition of InternationalFilm Festival of India (IFFI) was heldin Panaji, Goa from 23 November to3 December 2011. Film star ShahRukh Khan inaugurated the 42ndedition of IFFI. The inaugural cer-emony was marked by presentationof Life Time Achievement award,which was revived after almost 10years to French film maker BertrandTavernier by Shah Rukh Khan. Theopening film of the festival was TheConsul of Bordeaux, directed byFrancisco Manso and Joao Correa.The 42nd IFFI came to an end withthe Asia premiere of the film TheLady directed by Luc Besson. For thefirst time, the inauguration ceremonywas held 30 km away from the mainaction point. There was a first-everopen screen on a football ground forfree display of soccer films. The fes-tival was the first to feature the newsections like 3D, Animation(Sketches on Screen) and FestivalKaleidoscope films.

    Gomant Vibhushan

    World renowned architect and Goa'sson-of-the-soil Charles Correa wasbestowed with Goa's highest civil-ian honour, the Gomant Vibhushan,on the eve of the Golden Jubiliee ofGoa's Liberation on 18 December2011. The award was presented tohim by Goa governor KShankaranarayanan. Goa governorpresented Correa with the over half-metre high, glass-encased brass rep-lica of Goa's state symbol along witha cash award of Rs 5 lakh and a ci-tation in one of Correa's own archi-tectural creations, the Kala Academyat Panaji. Correa's architectural ge-nius and projects dotsnot only Indiancities but also cities around theworld, including Boston and Lisbon.Correa is the second recipient of theGomant Vibhushan, the first beingeminent nuclear scientist AnilKakodkar, who was awarded theGomant Vibhushan in 2010. Correahas earlier been conferred withIndia's Padma Shri and PadmaVibhushan.

    Clean DevelopmentMechanism Project

    Award

    Delhi Metro Rail Corporation(DMRC)won a green award for reducingemissions of polluting gases in thenational capital by 6.3 lakh tons ev-ery year. The best Clean Develop-ment Mechanism (CDM) projectaward was presented at Urban Mo-bility Conference, 2011 which con-cluded in New Delhi on 7 December2011. The best CDM award wasgiven to Delhi Metro for for its ModalShift Project under which it becamethe first Metro rail and rail-basedsystem in the world to be certifiedby United Nations for getting carboncredits for reducing green housegas(GHG) emissions. Delhi Metro,which ferries around 18 lakh peopledaily, helped to reduce pollution lev-els in the city by 6.3 lakh tonnes ev-ery year, thus helping in reducingglobal warming. DMRC director(Works) Mangu Singh received theaward on the organisation's behalf.This is the second CDM project fromDMRC to be registered with the UNin the last three years. DMRC's firstCDM project on regenerative brak-ing had also achieved many inter-national firsts apart from earningvaluable foreign exchange for thecountry.

    Shakti BhattFirst Book Prize

    Jamil Ahmad was declared the win-ner of the Shakti Bhatt First BookPrize for his book The WanderingFalcon at the British Council in NewDelhi on 21 December 2011. TheWandering Falcon, is a narrativeabout the lives of tribal people alongthe borders of Afghanistan, Pakistanand Iran. The book contained per-sonal sights, sounds, actual facesand conversations. The book thathas won critical acclaim worldwidewas written decades ago and thenwent into hibernation for 40 years.He started writing the book in 1971,it was completed by 1973 and thenit hibernated for 40 years.

    Born in Jalandhar in 1933, JamilAhmad is a Pakistani national. Hehad not agreed to the demands ofthe publishers, which eventually ledto the book being locked away forfour decades. The book was pub-lished by Hamish Hamilton animprint of Penguin earlier in 2011.Ahmad was posted in Quetta in 1959where he first came into contactwith tribals and was fascinated bytheir lives and their stories.The former civil servant from Paki-stan, Ahmad gave away the prizemoney of Rs. 1 lakh to St. Columba'sSchool, where he was enrolled from1941 to 1944. The prize is set up inmemory of writer and editor ShaktiBhatt. A shortlist of six books wasannounced ahead of the prize cer-emony. The shortlist included TheCollaborator by Mirza Waheed, TheTruth About Me by A. Revathi,Chinaman by Shehan Karunatilaka,A Free Man by Aman Sethi and R.D.Burman: The Man, The Music byAnirudha Bhattacharjee and Balaji

    Vittal. The winner was chosen by ajury comprising graphic novelist andillustrator Sarnath Bannerjee, writerand blogger Jai Arjun Singh, and nov-elist Palash Krishna Mehrotra.

    Sangita Kalanidhi M.S.Subbulakshmi Award

    S.R. Nathan, former President of theRepublic of Singaporepresented theSangita Kalanidhi M.S.Subbulakshmi Award to SangitaKalanidhi-elect Trichy Sankaran atthe inauguration of the 85th annualconference of the Music Academy inChennai on 15 December 2011. S.R.Nathan also inaugurated the 85thannual conference of the MusicAcademy. On the occassion the sec-ond volume of the SangitaSampradaya Pradarsini waslaunched. The Music Academy andthe Singapore Indian Fine Arts Soci-ety (SIFAS) exchanged a memoran-dum of understanding on educationand training in Carnatic music, draft-ing of syllabus and training of teach-ers during the inaugral ceremony.The Music Academy pioneered theMargazhi music festival in Chennai,which had evolved into a wondrousphenomenon that greatly enrichedthe cultural underpinning of the cityover the last eight decades.     G. D. Birla Award forScientific Research

    Professor Subhasis Chaudhuri of Indian Instituteof Technology-Mumbai was selected for the pres-tigious G. D. Birla Award for ScientificResearch.Prof. Chaudhuri who works in the De-partment of Electrical Engineering was chosen forthe award for his important contributions in thearea of electronic communications. He made origi-nal and substantive contributions in the specificareas of depth recovery from defocused observa-tions and generation of super resolutionimages.Prof. Chaudhury joined IIT-Mumbai in1990 and is currently serving as an Institute ChairProfessor and Dean of International Relations. Healso works in the area of computer vision and im-age processing.The award, constituted by the K.K. Birla Foundation, carries a cash prize of Rs.1.50lakh and is given to scientists below the age of 50.

    Dadasaheb Phalke Award

    Director K. Balachander was declared the winnerof Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2010 bythe Information and Broadcasting Ministry.K.Balachander born in July 1930 is one of the influ-ential filmmakers and trendsetters in Indian cin-ema. Most of his movies are directed in Tamilthough he has directed movies in other languageslike Hindi and Kannada languages as well. Hecame to prominence in 1960 as an amateur play-wright with his dynamic plays like MajorChandrakanth, Server Sundaram, Neerkumizhi,Mezhuguvarthi, Naanal and Navagraham.

    Anuvrat AhimsaInternational Peace Award

    Rajasthan Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot gave awaythe Anuvrat Ahimsa international peace award tonoted Gandhian philosophy exponent ThomasClough Daffern. The award consisted of a me-mento, a cheque for Rs.1 lakh and a certificate ofmerit.Dr. Daffern is a Director of London-basedInternational Institute of Peace Studies and Glo-bal Philosophy. The institute works across severalacademic fields for study and application of peaceand philosophy to various spheres of life.

    Crans Montana Forum Award

    Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar be-came the first Indian to receive the Crans Mon-tana Forum Award. The Crans Montana ForumAward was conferred upon him at a ceremony inBrussels on 24 June 2011.Ravi Shankar usuallyknown as Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was born asbornRavi Shankar Ratnam on 13 May 1956. He is aspiritual leader and founder of the Art of LivingFoundation (1982) which aims at relieving bothindividual stress and societal problems and vio-lence, and which is an NGO with UNESCO con-sultative status. He also established in 1997 aGeneva-based charity, International Association forHuman Values along with the 14th Dalai Lama.International Association for Human Values is anNGO that engages in relief work and rural devel-opment and aims to foster shared globalvalues.According to him, science and spiritualityare linked and compatible, both springing from theurge to know.

    Jawaharlal Nehru Awardfor International

    Understanding for 2009

    German Chancellor Angela Merkel was chosen forthe prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Award for Inter-national Understanding for 2009 for her enormousefforts toward sustainable and equitable develop-ment. The External Affairs Ministry release re-vealed that that the jury chaired by Vice-President

    Mohammad Hamid Ansari, has decided to conferthe award for 2009 on Dr. Merkel.

    Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Under-standing founded in 1965 is an international awardpresented by the Government of India. The awardis administered by the Indian Council for CulturalRelations (ICCR) to people for their outstandingcontribution to the promotion of international un-derstanding, goodwill and friendship among peopleof the world. The award carries prize money ofRs.1 crore besides a trophy and citation.OlafurRagnar Grimsson was the winner of JawaharlalNehru Award for International Understanding for2007.Martin Luther King, Jr., Khan Abdul GaffarKhan, Mother Teresa, Kenneth Kaunda, Aung SanSuu Kyi, Hosni Mubarak, Josip Broz Tito andNelson Mandela are some of past recipients of theaward.

    Hindi AcademyShalaka Samman

    Eminent Hindi litterateur Arvind Kumar was pre-sented the Hindi Academy Shalaka Samman bywell known poet and former bureaucrat Dr. SitaKant Mahapatra at Delhi Secretariat on 24 June2011. The award carried a citation, shawl, mementoand a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh.Arvind Kumar startedhis career as a child labour in a publishing housein Delhi in 1945 but with his dedication and workhe become editor of magzines like Madhuri,Sarvottam. He has also created several dictionar-ies and thesaurus in Hindi-English and Hindi-Sanskrit.Shalaka Samman is the highest honourof Delhi state in the field of Hindi literature.

    Novelist Aminatta Forna won 2011 Common-wealth Writers' Prize for The Memory of LoveBritish-born Sierra Leonean novelist AminattaForna won the 2011 Commonwealth Writers' Prizefor her novel, The Memory of Love. AminattaForna's The Memory of Love was praised by thejudges for its powerful portrayal of human resil-ience.     12th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA)awards ceremony was organised in Toronto on 25June 2011. My Name is Khan starring Shah RukhKhan and Kajol also won accolades. The first everGreen IIFA Award by Panasonic went to actressPriyanka Chopra.Special honours were conferredon veteran actor Dharmendra and singer AshaBhosle. We cannotachieve democracy and lasting peacein the world unless women obtain thesame opportunities as men to influencedevelopments at all levels of society.In October 2000, the UN SecurityCouncil adopted Resolution 1325. The

    resolution for the first time madeviolence against women in armedconflict an international security issue. It underlined the need for women tobecome participants on an equalfooting with men in peace processesand in peace work in general.Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is Africas firstdemocratically elected femalepresident. Since her inauguration in2006, she has contributed to securingpeace in Liberia, to promotingeconomic and social development, andto strengthening the position ofwomen. Leymah Gbowee mobilizedand organized women across ethnicand religious dividing lines to bring anend to the long war in Liberia, and toensure womens participation inelections. She has since worked toenhance the influence of women inWest Africa during and after war. Inthe most trying circumstances, bothbefore and during the Arab spring,Tawakkul Karman has played aleading part in the struggle forwomens rights and for democracyand peace in Yemen.

    ICRC Award

    The Hindu s Chhattisgarhcorrespondent, Aman Sethi, has wonthe International Committee of theRed Cross award for the best Indianprint media article on humanitarianissues. His article on threeChhattisgarh villages ruthlesslytorched by police commandos inMarch 2011 was selected as the bestof nearly 80 entries from across thecountry. About 300 homes andgranaries were burnt in the five-daypolice operation which left three mendead, and three women sexuallyassaulted. Based on interviews witheyewitnesses and police sources, Mr.Sethis coverage spurred the local

    administration to probe the incidentand send aid to the affected villages.Tehelka s Umar Baba took thesecond place, while the third prizewent to Reji Joseph of RashtraDeepika and the consolation prize toAnup Sharma of The Times of India..

    STPI Award

    Infosys has bagged the SoftwareTechnology Parks of India (STPI)Award for the Highest Exporter in theIT sector, while multinational bankGoldman Sachs Services got theHighest Exporter Award in the IT-enabled services (ITeS) sector.Infosyswas also named the highestemployer, while Hewlett PackardGlobalsoft was recognised for creatingthe highest number of new jobs.Meanwhile, the highest growth in ITexports was recorded by IntelTechnology, even as Goldman Sachsretained the title for ITeS in thiscategory too. Qualcomm India andGoldman Sachs bagged the awardsfor the highest exports per employeein the IT and ITeS category.

    Schlingel International FilmFestival

    Actor/director Amol Guptes sonPartho Gupte, who delivered anexcellent performance as the quick-witted Stanley in his fathers StanleyKa Dabba won the best actor awardat the Schlingel International FilmFestival that concluded in Chmnitz,Germany.Partho won the best actor award,beating 130 young contenders from allacross the world. Stanley Ka Dabbahas beenso far screened at fourfestivals, including Mumbai FilmFestival. Schlingel is the only filmfestival in the world devoted to filmsfor and about children. Its a veryevolved film festival. The quality offilms and principal performances are

    at par with some of the most complexfilms for adult audiences. There wereover 130 films in the competition.

    Rajah Sir Annamalai ChettiarAward

    Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar BirthdayCommemoration Award for 2011 waspresented to noted vocalist SudhaRaghunathan. The award carried acitation, a plaque and a cash purse ofRs.1 lakh.Speaking after distributingthe award Doraiswamy Raju, formerJudge, Supreme Court, said Rajah SirAnnamalai Chettiar was known for hisphilanthropy. Even on the logo of theChettinad it has been inscribed StriveSave Serve. Rajah Sir AnnamalaiChettiar served for both social andreligious causes. In her acceptancespeech Sudha Raghunathan said thepresentation of award had inspired herto sing more songs in Tamil, she said.

    IIPC Honour

    The international honours panel andthe honours committee of the IndiaInternational Photographic Council hasadmitted city-based photo journalist T.Srinivasa Reddy to the fellowship ofthe council. He is the first man in thefellowship in journalism section, said astatement from the IIPC.

    IPI-India Award

    The International Press Institute(IPI) India award for excellence injournalism, 2011, has been awardedjointly to Tehelka and The Week fortheir outstanding journalistic work in2010. In a release here, the IPI Indiachapter announced that Tehelka wasselected for its expose of the rent ariot tactics of the Sree Rama Senein Karnataka, which admitted takingmoney to organise attacks on innocentpersons and institutions.     M.K. Mani, pioneer in nephrology inthe country and Chief Nephrologist atApollo Hospital, Chennai, has beenhonoured with the 40th Dhanvantari

    Award. Dr. Mani pioneered innovativetechniques and a new regimen in themanagement of kidney disorders. Heis the recipient of many awards,including the Padma Bhushan and theRabindranath Tagore Award and hasmore than 125 publications to hiscredit. He has been awarded thehonorary Doctorate of Science byseveral universities. Dr. Mani becamewell-known after he gave a freshlease of life to Jayaprakash Narayan,who was suffering from a kidneyailment and had a cardiac arrest atthe Jaslok Hospital. The prestigiousaward, which recognises contributionin medical science, is awardedannually since 1972.     Environmentalist, lawyer and formerUnion Minister, Mohan Dharia, hasbeen selected as the winner of the26th Indira Gandhi Award for NationalIntegration. The 86-year-old PadmaVibhushan awardee, who currentlyruns the Vanrai NGO in Pune, wasselected for the 2010 award, whichcarries a citation and cash prize of Rs.5 lakh.     Akshaya Mohanty Samman

    Playback singer Asha Bhosle, whosemelodies have enchanted severalgenerations of music lovers in thecountry, has been selected for theprestigious Akshaya MohantySamman for 2011 in recognition of heroutstanding contribution in the field ofmusic. The award, comprising a cashprize of Rs. 1 lakh and a letter ofappreciation, would be presented at afunction here on October 12, the birthanniversary of legendary Oriya singerand musician Akshaya Mohanty. Mr. Kothari, who hascompleted 30 years in journalism, isattached as a consultant with the U.N.bodies as well as a number of civil

    Coach Kawaljeet Singh who hadtrained the 16-year-old Sunil Kumar to

    win the National mens tennis title in1999 was presented the Dilip Boselifetime achievement award by theAll India Tennis Association during thesixth National coaches workshop inGoa, on Saturday. Coach Rama Raoof Mumbai was also selected for theaward. He has been training juniors athis Practennis Academy for manyyears, and Karan Rastogi was one ofthe notable trainees.     The 44th Jnanpith Award for2008 was presented to renownedUrdu poet Professor AkhlaqMohammad Khan Shahryar for hisdistinguished contribution in

    enriching Indian literature. He waspresented the award by actorAmitabh Bachhan in a glittering

The selection board -chaired by noted writer andJnanpith award winner Dr SitakantMahapatra - made the selectionsfor the 45th and 46th Jnanpithawards.Octogenarian Amar Kantis a leading author whose famousnovel Inhin Hathiyaron Se earnedhim the Sahitya Akademi Awardin 2007.Shrilal Shukla is aneminent novelist and asatirist,whose works threw lighton the falling moral values of theIndian society in the post-Independence era.
