From Father Mark Mertes, Pastor:
Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God! Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain
and hill shall be made low … then the glory of the Lord shall be re-
vealed. (Isaiah 40.5) God and life circumstances and the coronavirus have certainly changed the “landscape” of our lives. Advent makes perfect sense as we say Mara-natha, Come Lord Jesus! I know that I need a Savior to come and guide me and those I love through this time. For our part, we need to make an Advent place where we can meet the Lord. We need a prayer space, a solitary spot, a quiet refuge, a prayer closet……somewhere that is our own where we can let go of all that is swirling around us. For most this place is indoors; for others it could be outside in nature; it may be in our bedroom, our car, our lunch-break….. I invite us to “change our landscape” this Advent. Some ideas: Advent wreaths can be as simple
as four candles placed in a circle. Return to your wreath as you do your daily quiet time.
Enjoy Advent music. I have really been enjoying Advent at Ephesus which is sung by the sisters in Gower, MO.
Take 3 weeks to set up your Christmas tree. Start with a tree and then day by day make it ready.

Scripture Readings for Week of December 7-13
Mon/Lun: Isaiah 35:1-10; Luke 5:17-26 Tue/Mar: Genesis 3:9-15, 20; Ephesians 1:3-6, 11-12; Luke 1:26-38 Wed/Mie: Isaiah 40:25-31; Matthew 11:28-30 Thur/Jue: Isaiah 41:13-20; Matthew 11:11-15 Fri/Vie: Isaiah 48:17-19; Matthew 11:16-19 Sat/Sab: Zechariah 2:14-17; Luke 1:26-38 Sun/Dom: Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 John 1:6-8, 19-28
Be consoled by the warmth of your home and those with whom you share it on a chilly December day. I light candles to set the mood. (I learned this from my mother.) As our travel plans are modified or even cancelled, pay attention to the opportunities of being together in our homes.
Enjoy the December Feasts of Mary with a daily rosary. Dai-lyrosary.net is a great resource.
Instead of running around like cra-zy shopping and trying to fulfill the perfect Christmas list, watch for the new simpler plan the Lord will reveal for this year.
Let us all prepare a place to welcome the Christ who will surely come!

Retirement Fund for Religious Collection Sunday, December 13
In good times and bad, senior Catholic sis-ters, brothers, and religious order priests have dedicated themselves to service and acts of mercy. Today, they pray for an aching world. Yet years of serving for little or no pay have left their religious communities without enough retirement savings. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide medications, nursing care, and other necessi-ties. Please be generous.
Christmas Collection for Catholic Charities
When we feed the hungry and shelter the stranger, we are also serving Jesus himself. This past fiscal year we provided food and shelter to 57,573 people. We provided 88,613 summer meals to children during the Pandemic. Open your hands and hearts to embrace the poor through a gift to the Christ-mas 2nd Collection to support Catholic Chari-ties.
Christmas Flowers In Memory Of …
Although contribution envelopes specific to Flowers and/or Memorial Flowers was not included with the offertory envelopes, you may donate toward Christmas flowers in memory of a loved one. Checks will be ac-cepted at the parish office or in the weekend offertory through December 18. Please be certain to indicate on your envelope or in the memo line of your check that the donation is for flowers in the name of your deceased loved one. The list of Loved Ones will be pub-lished in a bulletin shortly after Christmas. Thank you for your contribution to add to the beauty of the Christmas season and the Church!
Training is required before volunteering with children
at the parish or school. To volunteer with children in the parish or school, you must first attend a Virtus “Protecting God’s Children” session and pass a background check.
