  • From Father Mark Mertes, Pastor:

For if their rejection [of Jesus’ message] is the reconciliation of

the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? (Romans 11.15)

St. Paul struggled mightily trying to un-derstand why his Jewish brothers and sisters would not accept the Good News of Jesus. In his letter to the Romans he gives us his analysis of the situation: be-cause they were the first chosen by God, and because they said no to Jesus, the Good News of salvation therefore has been shared with the Gentiles (that would be us!). But that is not all. Paul also understands that the resurrection of Jesus will eventually include the Jews and all of creation as God brings his plan of redemption to fulfillment. Each of the gospel writers approaches this difficult topic differently, and their perspective depends on the historical sit-uation in which they were living. For St. Matthew, it was important to high-light the Jewish roots of everything that his Jewish-Christian community be-lieved. So when Jesus is approached by a Canaanite woman, a foreigner, a non-Jew, he says to her that he has not come to help her, a foreigner. His response may seem to us a bit rude, but he is giv-ing voice to a typical attitude of his day. This woman goes on to reveal that she has “great faith” and Jesus grants her re-quest.

    Scripture Readings for Week of August 17-23 Mon/Lun: Ezekiel 24:15-24; Matthew 19:16-22 Tue/Mar: Ezekiel 28:1-10; Matthew 19:23-30 Wed/Mie: Ezekiel 34:1-11; Matthew 20:1-16 Thur/Jue: Ezekiel 36:23-28; Matthew 22:1-14 Fri/Vie: Ezekiel 37:1-14; Matthew 22:34-40 Sat/Sab: Ezekiel 43:1-7ab; Matthew 23:1-12 Sun/Dom: Isaiah 22:19-23; Romans 11:33-36; Matthew 16:13-20

We too may wrestle with the surprising way that God’s grace is unfolding around us Maybe we have a spouse or son or

daughter or grandson or granddaugh-ter that is not practicing their Catho-lic faith….

Perhaps they are practicing faith but in another Christian denomination….

Maybe they say that they don’t be-lieve in God or practice any reli-gion….

The good News is that God’s grace will reach out to all. God pursues each of us with His steadfast love. We are all always being called to the banquet of Life. Let us imitate the Canaanite woman and say “Lord, help me.” With the grace of the Holy Spirit, those we love will be blessed and encouraged by our faith.
