EDItoRIaLThe Domaine de Chantilly comprises over 20,000 acres of land, located in one of the largest forests in the Paris region. It is made up of the Château, the Condé museum, the grounds and gardens, and the Great Stables which house the Museum of the Horse. the Château 90’

A patron and collector of art and manuscripts, the Duke of Aumale spent much of his life reconstructing the Châ-teau de Chantilly, which had been destroyed during the French revolution. In rebuilding it, he designed the châ-teau to house the works of art and rare books that he was so fond of acquiring.

Since the Middle Ages, the Château was home to many of France’s greatest Princes. Since the 19th century, it houses the Condé Museum, which has the largest collection of antique paintings after the Louvre, as well as 13,000 rare books and illuminated manuscripts.

➤ The large Le Nôtre flowerbedDesigned at the end of the 17th century by André Le Nôtre, the gardener of Versailles, for Louis II de Bourbon, Prince of Condé, the large French-style flowerbed in Chantilly provides the most stunning viewpoints of the visit.

➤ the anglo-Chinese gardenDraw in 1773 by the architect Jean-François Leroy for Prince Louis-Joseph de Bourbon-Condé, the Anglo-Chinese garden houses the Hamlet, made up of five small houses that are rustic in appearance. It served as the model for Marie-Antoinette’s Hamlet in the Petit Trianon in Versailles.

➤ the English GardenLocated between the Château and the Great Stables, the English garden was designed in the 19th century by the architect Victor Dubois. Enhanced with romantic structures such as the temple of Venus, the island of Love and the Beauvais Waterfall.

the Great stables 70’

A masterpiece of 18th century architecture, the Great Stables were built by the architect Jean Aubert for Louis-Henri de Bourbon, the 7th prince of Condé. The Great Stables are considered amongst the most beautiful in the world. They now host about thirty horses of different breeds.

➤ the museum of the Horse 40’

The Museum of the Horse is housed in the 15 rooms of the Cour des Remises in the Great Stables. As a museum of both art and ethnology, its aim is to allow visitors discover the importance of the relationship between men and horses since the beginning of civilisation. Visitors can contemplate almost 200 objects and works of art: paintings, prints, sculptures, manuscripts, equestrian equipment...

Equestrian demonstration under the Dome of the Great Stables, where our riders will display the elements of horse and pony dressage, as well as the preparation involved in equestrian shows.

metamorphosisThe riders of the Great Stables will transport you to the world of metamorphosis. The metamorphosis of time, of souls, misappropriation of objects, equestrian transformations.

Horse, Dream and PoetryThe riders of the Great Stables present the best of the various shows created over the last 10 years.

Christmas showEvery year, the Great Stables stage their traditional Christmas show. A spellbinding and poetic tale revisited by our riders.

Show at 2:30 pm, from April to November. Length: approx. 1h.

Information sheets

These large, laminated sheets are mounted in the rooms of the Château (Condé Museum and Large Suites) providing information on the drawings, artists, period in which the portraits were completed, and the origins of the collection.

Guides

Free admission for external qualified guides is available at no extra cost. Our guides are available on request in French, English, German, Italian, Spanish and Dutch.

shopsA wide range of souvenirs and gifts, books, jewelry, leather goods, porcelain, posters, soft toys and games are on sale in the shops located in the Château and the Great Stables.

Coach ParkingDrop-off points are situated near the gate of the Château or opposite the Great Stables. Reserved parking for coaches is available (cf. map on page 5).

Complete your lunchChantilly whipped cream demonstrationInvented during the Age of Enlightenment at Le Hameau, Chantilly whipped cream was served during the magnificent receptions held in the Domaine de Chantilly. At the end of your meal, our head chef will prepare the famous Chantilly whipped cream in front of your guests. The Chantilly whipped cream will then be served at each table.

- The Gallery of Painting : the largest room in the château, designed by the Duke of Aumale to enchant his guests by the wealth of works exhibited in the typical layout of the period. The Gallery of Painting is the heart of the Condé Museum. Almost 85 paintings are exhibited in the gallery.
