GROUP AND TEAMWORK LEADERSHIP Forming groups fulfills many

human needs, such as the need for affiliation, affection, and control; individuals also need to cooperate in groups to fulfill basic survival needs.

GROUP COMMUNICATION

Group communication may be defined as the exchange of information with those who are alike culturally, linguistically, and/or geographically.

Primary groups meet most, if not all, of one’s needs. Groups that meet some, but not all, needs are called secondary groups.

A GROUP, BY DEFINITION, INCLUDES AT LEAST THREE PEOPLE.

A microgroup is a small, independent group that has a link, affiliation, or association with a larger group.

Group socialization involves how the group members interact with one another and form relationships.

GROUP AND PROBLEM SOLVING

In terms of problem solving, work groups can accomplish more than individuals can. People, each of whom have specialized skills, talents, experience, or education come together in new combinations with new challenges, find new perspectives to create unique approaches that they themselves would not have formulated alone

STEPPING STONES OF GROUP

Forming; members come together, learn about each other, and determine the purpose of the group.

Storming; members engage in more direct communication and get to know each other. Conflicts between group members will often arise during this stage.

Norming; members establish spoken or unspoken rules about how they communicate and work. Status, rank, and roles in the group are established.

Performing; members fulfill their purpose and reach their goal.

Adjourning; members leave the group.

GROUPS AND THEIR INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS COME TOGETHER AND GROW APART IN PREDICTABLE PATTERNS.GROUP PROBLEM SOLVING CAN BE AN ORDERLY PROCESS WHEN IT IS BROKEN DOWN INTO SEVEN SPECIFIC STAGES.

Define the problem.Analyze the problem.

Establish criteria.Consider possible solutions.Decide on a solution.Implement the solution.Follow up on the solution.

Meetings require planning, choice of appropriate technology, and understanding of organizational communication.Teamwork allows individuals to share their talents and energy to accomplish goals. An effective leader facilitates this teamwork process.

A leader-as-technician role often occurs when we have skills that others do not. The leader-as-conductor involves a central role of bringing people together for a common goal. A leader-as-coach combines many of the talents and skills we’ve discussed here, serving as a teacher, motivator, and keeper of the goals of the group.

Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.
